RFP 455 Travel Tours 2011 - Addendum #1 – additional information Please see revision (below) to Provence to Paris tour, the itinerary was changed and has now been altered to incorporate these changes. From Provence to Paris: A journey of discovery through France May 16 to June 1, 2011 Days 1 – 2 (Victoria to Paris) Monday, May 16 – Tuesday, May 17 via Seattle? Air France (code-share with Alaska Airlines Victoria-Seattle) non-stop Seattle to Paris, arriving CDG about 8:30am Friday morning (the 6½ hour layover in Toronto via Air Canada is very tiring; alternative: WestJet to Toronto then Air France to Paris? WJ and AF will probably have their code-sharing in place by then) From the airport, direct to Lyon via TGV (current schedule departs at 11:30am, 2 hours travel time); arrive Lyon mid-afternoon and transfer to hotel – rest of day free. Four nights in Lyon. Suggested Lyon hotels: preference: Grand Hôtel des Terreaux – 16, rue Lanterne OR Hôtel Carlton Lyon – 4, rue Jussieu or equivalent—hotel should be walking distance from Vieux Lyon and other attractions, preferably in the Presqu’ile. A quiet location is a must, and the bathrooms need to be spacious enough to be comfortable for older travellers. We need a hotel with a good-quality continental breakfast available. Day 3 (Lyon) Wednesday, May 18 From mid-morning to mid-afternoon, a walking tour of Vieux-Lyon with a local guide (relaxed pace) Arrange group lunch at Les Terrasses de La Tour Rose 22, rue du Bœuf (in Vieux Lyon) or at Café Epiceries 2, rue du Bœuf or equivalent Arrange welcome dinner at: L'Auberge du Pont de Collonges 40 Rue de la Plage Collonges au Mont d'Or Day 4 (Lyon) Thursday, May 19 Guided tour of Musée de la Civilisation Gallo-Romaine from morning to early afternoon; time for lunch at the museum at participants’ cost Evening concert – National Orchestra of Lyon (include ticket) (Poulenc, Bartók) – 8:30 pm, l’Auditorium de Lyon Day 5 (Lyon) Friday, May 20 Musée des Beaux-Arts (self-guided), Place de Terreaux lunch at a characteristic Lyonnais ‘bouchon’ (include) afternoon return to Musée des Beaux-Arts OR Musée de l'Imprimerie de Lyon (Jamie’s preference!), 13, rue de la poulaillerie evening free, or entertainment…jazz? chamber music? Day 6 (Lyon-Avignon) Saturday, May 21 Travel by coach leaving Lyon mid-morning, to Avignon (200km), with lunch at some pleasant restaurant in the country featuring vins de la région; or (Jamie’s preference) a more extensive wine tour with stops at a few Côtes-du-Rhone communes between Vienne and Valence. OR day-long river cruise from Lyon to Avignon in any case, arrive Avignon late afternoon. Five nights in Avignon. Preference : Hôtel de l'Horloge – 1, Rue Felicien David, Place de l'Horloge or similar – within the city walls, on a quiet street, walking distance to the Palais des Papes; reasonably-sized bathrooms; continental breakfast in the hotel or easily accessible nearby Evening free Day 7 (Avignon) Sunday, May 22 Morning river cruise to Villeneuve Lez Avignon, to visit the Fort and Abbaye Saint-André with its gardens and views of Avignon. Rest of day free. Perhaps a concert or other entertainment in the evening. Day 8 (Avignon) Monday, May 23 Palais des Papes (guided tour) Pont Saint-Bénézet remainder of day and evening free or concert etc. Possibly evening river cruise? Day 9 (Avignon) Tuesday, May 24 Morning coach departure to Camargue Nature Centre (Bouches du Rhône) Musée camarguais, l’Étang de Vaccarès lunch at Saintes-Maries-de-la-mer ? then coach to Pont du Gard (self-guided walking, interpretive centre) Return to Avignon late afternoon Dinner at La Fourchette (or perhaps Hiély-Lucullus) (or this could be on Day 8 depending upon entertainment possibilities) Day 10 (Avignon) Wednesday, May 25 Early morning by coach to St. Remy-de-Provence (20km) to experience the Wednesday market there. Lunch in St. Remy—or even better, somewhere charmant, à la campagne; then on to Glanum and Les Baux de Provence, all within 20km. Return to Avignon late afternoon. Day 11 (Avignon-Paris) Thursday, May 26 Depart mid-morning via TGV, Avignon to Paris (2 hours 40 minutes); arrive Gare de Lyon early-afternoon and transfer to hotel… We prefer a hotel on a quiet street in the Marais or Latin Quarter (suggest Best Western La Jardin de Cluny, Hotel du College de France, Hotel Saint-Jacques, Hotel Acte V) see hotel comments above! Evening concert – Orchestre National de France @ 8 pm (Schubert, Liszt) – please reserve second from top priced tickets Day 12-14 (Paris) Friday - Sunday, May 27-29 to choose from… Salle Pleyel (Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France – Friday, May 27 @ 8 pm) or Cité de la musique—check listings as soon as available Musée de Cluny (“Lady and the Unicorn” tapestries--guided) Musée Rodin (self-guided: many requests for this on the last tour) Musée Cognacq-Jay (18th-century Paris—highly recommended) Louvre, l’Orangerie, Musée d’Orsay optional during free time—or we’ll choose one of these based on their exhibition schedule Day 15 (Paris) Monday, May 30 day trip to Fontainebleau (guided) return to Paris late afternoon evening free Day 16 (Paris) Tuesday, May 31 free day to see what was missed so far…or to explore the flâneur option! evening: farewell dinner: Plaza d’Athénée?
