Kenya
The Republic of Kenya is a major country in East Africa with a long coastline along the
Indian Ocean to the south-east, and bordered by Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west,
South Sudan to the north-west, Ethiopia to the north and Somalia to the north-east. Capital
and largest city is Nairobi, with the country’s total population exceeding 41 million. Kenya is
rich in national parks and wildlife reserves, which attract great numbers of tourists who
contribute greatly to the economy, although this is now led by telecommunications and the
financial sector. Agriculture also still provides nearly a quarter of the gross domestic
product.
Kenya Airports Authority (KAA)
Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) is an autonomous government body established in 1991 to
facilitate the operation, maintenance and development of infrastructure for aviation services.
It manages and operates the three international airports, including Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta
International (NBO/HKJK), Mombasa Moi International (MBA/HKMO), the main gateways
into the country, as well as Eldoret International (EDL/HKEL). The principal domestic
airports under its jurisdiction are Kisumu (KIS/HKKI), Nairobi Wilson (WIL/HKNW),
Lokichogio (LKG/HKLK), Malindi (MYD/HKML) and Wajir (WJR/HKWJ), plus the two
airstrips of Lamu Manda (LAU/HKLU) and Ukunda.
Work in progress or planned includes runway rehabilitation at Nyeri (NYE/HKNI),
restoration of aircraft pavements and associated facilities at the airstrips of Isiolo (HKIS),
proposed runway rehabilitation at Lodwar (LOK/HKLO), proposed resurfacing of runway at
Kakamega (HKKG) and provision of environmental impact assessments for Embu (HKEM),
Migwena and Nakuru (NUU/HKNK). A tender has been issued for the construction of a
perimeter security fence at Malindi (MYD/HKML), and for the extension and strengthening
of runway 1 at Lamu Manda (LAU/HKLU).
In FY 2010/2011, the authority’s airports handled 8,201,180 passengers, a 14.45 percent
increase over the previous year; 242,614 aircraft movements, up 14.85 percent; and 261,301
tonnes of cargo, a decline of 1.4 percent. Growth projections for the current year 2011/2012
are 6.1 percent for passengers, 5.3 percent for aircraft movements and 8.6 percent for cargo.

Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International (NBO/HKJK)
Construction work started in September 2006 on a phased expansion of the airport, one of the
busiest in Africa, to more than double capacity and enable it to handle up to 9 million
passengers a year, the number expected in 2018. Phase 1, which included apron and taxiway
construction, fencing, extension of the fuel hydrant system and civil works for the new
Terminal 4, was completed in mid-2008 at a cost of USD 40 million. This was followed by
the construction of the new terminal and three-storey parking for 1,500 cars, and an increase
in aircraft parking stands from 23 to 43 under Phase 2. Although expected to be completed in
2011, work is still ongoing and will not now be finished until 2013. Estimated cost for Phase
2 is USD 46 million. Phase 3, expected to cost USD 95 million, will involve the expansion
and renovation of the existing terminals with the construction of another floor level that will
enable the separation of incoming and outgoing passengers. Phase 4, to cost USD 48 million,
includes rehabilitation of the pavements, upgrading of the instrument landing system, and
new taxiways to enhance runway capacity. Consultants are a Canadian-Kenyan consortium
led by Queen’s Quay Architects International and Mueller International. Construction work is
being carried out by Wu Yi Company of China.
The total value of the project is estimated at approximately USD 230 million, funded from
revenues and the World Bank, with additional financing provided by the European
Investment Bank (EIB) and the French Development Agency (AFD), which have earmarked
USD 93 million each. Tenders were invited for submission by the end of December 2011 for
consultancy services for the environmental and social impact assessment for the proposed
rehabilitation and upgrade of runway and taxiways, as well as for construction of a perimeter
security fence and refurbishment and improvements of VIP 3 lounge. The government is
considering building a new parallel runway.
