Can you explain why and how it was different? After my first film, Roger Frappier and I met and discussed potential future projects. He immediately came to me with this short story set in the North and I was immediately compelled to write the script for this amazing story about the Arctic, but in a new way, kind of the contemporary Arctic, almost as if it was set in the twenty-second century. We started working on it, but couldn’t nail down the plot, because there were almost two stories in the film: the story of the town and the story of the Great Arctic. We then set the script aside for a few years and, in the meantime, I did War Witch, another feature film. After War Witch, I started thinking about what film I wanted to do and that story came back to me. At the time, it was called Lucy. I think the turning point was deciding that things shouldn’t be as rational as we were trying to make them, trying to make the storyline relate to the inner world of the characters rather than making it more realistic. That was really a turning point for me. How did the bear make it into the script? It wasn’t called Two Lovers and a Bear at first. It was really Lucy and Roman. It was two lovers, without the bear. There were two things. I started reading a lot of Haruki Murakami and noticed his books featured flawed Greek-style gods, and I thought that was very interesting and very powerful. I thought there was something that relates to life in the North, how when you’re at the end of the world, literally, reality kind of becomes somewhat ephemeral and tied to the unconscious. Then, at the Amsterdam airport, I saw a sculpture of two huge figures, bronze statues, sitting and leaning back. And somehow, Murakami’s work, my understanding, my experience of the Arctic and those statues conjured up that talking, grumpy bear who is kind of a demigod, in the Greek sense of how gods are perceived. Is the bear a real character, or is it only in Roman’s mind? I’m giving myself the luxury of letting the viewer decide if the bear is a real character or if it only exists in Roman’s mind, or a little of both. I find that, nowadays, we ask that scripts be too expository, and I would prefer it if endings weren’t so clear-cut. I hope the bear is in the spirit of that. War Witch was partly set in Africa, now the story of Roman and Lucy is set in the Arctic. How do you see the relationship between the elements and the characters when your write a script? When I started writing Two Lovers and a Bear, I didn’t realize how strongly the setting was related to their relationship. I think I didn’t realize what an impact the environment can have on relationships. The idiosyncrasy of the North is that it is so cold, it burns. And that really applies to the relationship, too. It’s so warm that there’s that “physical” quality of the Arctic that’s reflected in Roman’s and Lucy’s relationship. So these two things are very strongly linked in the story. The environment kind of brings that to the fore in their relationship and those struggles. Some mornings, we would see a caravan of Ski-Doos going into the white wilderness and shooting a scene in the middle of nowhere. Can you talk about that? We could talk at length about the experience of filming in the Arctic, the struggles and the high points, but there was one day when we were heading out, outside of Iqaluit, quite farther, and we had about thirty minutes of snowmobiling to do. We had thirty snowmobiles, a mix of modern technology and old, timetested equipment such as sleds. It really felt like a scene out of Mad Max. Suddenly we were like fiveyear-olds, all looking at each other and ready to head out into the wild. And then our assistant would shout: “Start your engines!” And all of them: “Vroom!” We were like sixty kids looking at each other and Dossier de presse CANNES 2016 TWO LOVERS AND A BEAR heading out like a cavalry into the Great North. It was one of the most powerful moments of my film career. It was really, really something. Let’s talk about casting. How did you come to choose Dane DeHaan and Tatiana Maslany? I wanted this film to feel real and authentic, and I had seen Dane in The Place Beyond the Pines. I hadn’t seen him in the TV series he had done before, In Treatment. I was convinced that this guy, Dane DeHaan, had never acted before and was just being himself in the film, because it was so believable. When I found out he was a trained actor and that his craft made him so genuine, I was amazed. I was dumbfounded. I immediately told myself that, whatever the project, I wanted to work with this guy. We had discussed one or two projects, and this one, really, the timing was right and he was available, and I was really, really happy to have that authenticity onscreen. So Dane came along, and we searched long and hard for the other character, Lucy. We went all out. We tried the Great North, we tried Montreal and Toronto. And we kept the script open to work it so that it fit whatever actress we would find. We were open to anything – just find the best actress. Tatiana was gracious enough to do a screen test. I was really blown away by her range and her authenticity, as well. So that’s kind of what did it for me. She was also completely natural and in the moment, and very courageous as an actor. And she kept that up throughout the film, that honesty and openness, letting the character shine through, who she really is deep down. Were you afraid to do nearly a whole movie based only on two characters? I don’t think I was ever afraid. In a way, it’s much easier for me to work with two characters and build that relationship from A to Z. For example, with a film like Pulp Fiction, or Magnolia, it’s much more challenging to interweave the storylines. I think it’s really a privilege to have the time to build a relationship from beginning to end. How do you prepare them for love scenes? First and most importantly, I let them know that I’m just as uncomfortable as they are when we shoot the love scenes. Most actors are uncomfortable doing love scenes. But then I guess what’s important to me is to let them know that I have no specific expectations when it comes to love scenes. It just has to be authentic. Awkwardness in a scene can even be interesting, even if it’s not in the script. It can be for just a beat. Before making a connection, there is that awkwardness, just like in real life. We don’t discuss them too much. It’s basically more of a practical discussion about the rules of the game and what we are comfortable with and not comfortable with. Then we take it from there. Of course, when we think of the Arctic, we think of the beautiful light. How did you envision the cinematography? When we started scouting locations – with my DOP, Nicolas Bolduc – one thing that was eerie yet worrisome was the daylight conditions: every fifteen minutes, the light changes. We didn’t know how that would look on film, if there would be a problem with continuity. Because it’s amazing: the sky is purple, then blue, then orange, then red in a matter of minutes. So we decided to go with it, to have these variations in light serve as an echo of the film: surreal yet real. So we accepted it. But as it turned out, the light was fairly constant when we were filming. We were pretty lucky in that respect. The one thing we didn’t expect, which sometimes caused a panic, was the light at sunrise. We had noted when the sun rises when we were shooting at night and estimated we had six to seven hours of darkness. But because the sun is so low in the sky, the sky turns blue almost two hours before sunrise. So while we thought we had six hours of shooting time, we really only had four. That was really stressful. We had to rush through some of those nights, because we only had four hours to shoot everything. Frostbite was another major concern. There were scenes in which Tatiana was pulled by a Ski-Doo on skis and we only had fifteen to thirty seconds to shoot before frostbite set in and her face was literally burned by the cold. So frostbite was always a concern for the cast. Fortunately, it didn’t happen. It would have been terrible, not only for them, but in terms of continuity.
