PARIS WELL-bEing
The metro, noise ... Paris can sometimes be a stressful city. Luckily, the
French capital offers plenty of possibilities for recharging one’s batteries and
staying zen!
Far from the hustle and bustle of the city, massages, hammams, saunas,
make-up and hair salons help you to replenish your body and mind. A countless number of beauty institutes, spas and well-being centres ranging from
the accessible to the luxurious can be found in all areas of the city. As well as
the treatments offered, the calming, relaxing atmosphere and decor of these
places are sure to ease away all of your stress, aches and pains.
Sport is the perfect way to ensure physical and mental well-being. Indoors or
in the open air, alone or in a group, in trendy fitness centres, modern municipal facilities or outdoors, there is something for all tastes and budgets.
Well-being is also connected to diet and there are plenty of restaurants with gastronomic menus based around
organic and vegetarian produce. Even those on a detox diet can find lots to tempt them, while maintaining a trim
figure.
As for shopping, ethical, sustainable and natural products reign supreme in stores selling well-being and environmentally-friendly products. Such stores are increasingly popular and sell everything from cosmetics to clothes,
beauty care products to healthy food.
BEAUTY AND WELL-BEING
> Spas
‘Sanitas per aquam’: health by water. This is the definition of the word ‘spa’. Between beauty institutes and thalassotherapy, these spaces devoted to physical well-being, combine water treatments and beauty rituals, often
inspired by practices from all over the world, performed in sumptuous surroundings. Such venues are springing
up all over the capital, offering visitors and Parisians alike, the chance to relax and escape, albeit temporarily,
the stressful pace of city life. Large Parisian hotels all include spas offering beauty treatments using some of the
world’s most prestigious cosmetics brands, where ‘luxury, calm and pleasure’ are guaranteed to both residents
and non-residents of the establishment. Many of the new hotels opening in the capital boast a well-being space
for guests. Finally, for lovers of ancestral beauty rituals, visit one of the city’s traditional hammams for a hammam
or sauna session, depending on the ritual. A sense of exoticism guaranteed!

> Beauty Institutes
Independent beauty institutes and large cosmetics brands compete with each other to offer clients creative face
and beauty treatments, in bigger, more luxurious or more original surroundings. Amongst the latest trends: chic
beauty institutes offer clients beauty treatments in the exclusive and intimate setting of a private apartment in a
sumptuous Haussmanian-style building. The most up-to-date establishments are equipped with the latest technology and innovations, such as the ‘Iyashi Dôme’; a decontamination chamber similar to a sauna that eliminates
toxins and metals thanks to a traditional Japanese technique.
‘All-in-one’ beauty centres were once the preserve of large discount beauty chain stores offering multiple services
(hair, express massages, waxing, and face care) but more and more of these convenient centres are springing up
all over the city offering those customers pressed for time, a range of exclusive services all under the one roof.
Specialized in a specific domain, but inspired by the beauty express concept, ‘bars à beauté’ (beauty bars) are
opening up all over the city. Tanning, manicures and pedicures, eyebrows or smile: the list is endless! The latest
big craze amongst these beauty bars are ‘fish spas’: an Asian technique where customers dip their feet in a footbath filled with little fish that remove dead skin cells in a natural way.
Whether before your flight or just after arriving in the French capital, globetrotters can find all they need to
pamper themselves with a massage, manicure or wash and blow-dry at the city’s airports and train stations.
Another recent trend is the number of brands offering organic and natural treatments in specially designed ecofriendly spaces.

> Shopping for beauty and well-being products
Most cosmetic brands, exclusive and affordable, can be found in the large department stores – generally at the
basement level – and in the huge stores devoted to beauty.
Large health and beauty shops stock specialist skincare, well-being and hygiene products that can be bought
over-the-counter. They also sell vitamin and food supplements.
If you have a medical emergency late at night, there is no need to panic. Certain pharmacies are open 24 hours
and are there to help you feel better.
The trend is now for organic products, as well as natural, with the fair trade label. Sold in specialist stores, they
can also be found in large supermarkets and stores.

the various sporting options on offer in their sumptuous and exclusive surroundings.
The more affordable discount sports centres offer group classes, weights and fitness facilities for all at reasonable prices.
Other ‘niche’ clubs specialize in weight loss and exclusively target women for calorie-burning activities and nutritional, health and beauty programmes.
Another option is the municipal fitness centres and gyms. Paris has a large number of very nice sports complexes
offering weights equipment and cardio training, as well as a wide range of fitness classes and sporting activities
at very affordable prices, including skating to live music, climbing, yoga, artistic roller skating, rock ’n’ roll, and
archery. Plenty of safe and fun activities for everyone!

> Exercising in the great outdoors
Exercise outdoors in the fresh air in the heart of the city or in the forest!
The Bois de Vincennes and the Bois de Boulogne are favourite sporting spots for Parisians and offer fitness trails,
cycle paths, as well as pitches for playing football and rugby away from the pollution of the city.
There are plenty of golf courses in the Paris region where golfing fans can enjoy a game in an exceptional setting:
an ideal way to meet people or to play a round with business partners or friends, while improving your putting
skills and your swing!
The French capital has no shortage of suitable sporting spots either. Basketball nets, ping pong tables, bowling
pitches, roller and skate parks are scattered throughout the city and for those looking for more unusual, fun sporting activities or events, there is plenty on offer. Every Sunday morning, in a dozen Parisian parks and gardens,
qualified sports coaches offer gym classes and jogging for Parisians and tourists alike. Urban training is another

There are also numerous options for those looking to combine sporting activities and visits to iconic Parisian
landmarks and monuments. There are two walking trails, approximately 20 km long, that allow walkers to cross
the city from the Bois de Boulogne in the west to the Bois de Vincennes in the east or from the Parc de la Villette
in the north to the Parc Montsouris in the south. Joggers will enjoy running along the banks of the Seine, in the
city’s numerous parks or along the unusual Coulée verte, a 4.5 km tree-lined aerial walkway stretching from the
Bastille to the boulevard périphérique.
Bikes are another option. Renting has never been easier; there are lots of bike rental companies near the city’s
main tourist sites and close to stations. Some even offer guided tours of the capital on electric bikes. Relax, enjoy
the sites and let the bike do all of the hard work! In addition, the Vélib’ is a self-service bike rental facility put in
place by the Paris City Council and is the ideal way to discover the French capital at your ease while getting a little
exercise. Last but not least, scooters are the latest trend for rushed Parisians to get from A to B. These can also
be rented for a novel way to get around the city.

> Sports shops
Each of the large sports brands are represented in Paris and are usually located in fashionable premises boasting the very latest in high-tech equipment. On the other hand, smaller sports shops specialize in a niche area.
Attractive, for example, sells sportswear exclusively to women. AZ Fitness is the first store in Paris to specialize
in a whole range of cardio and weights accessories and equipment. The bicycle is king at Bicloune. Au Vieux
Campeur in the heart of the Latin Quarter has an ever increasing number of branches catering to every possible
need of hill walkers (and other similar sports). Another store, Andaska specializes in equipment for outdoor
sports. For cycling enthusiasts of all levels, BHV has opened a store entirely devoted to the bicycle, where you can
find a large range of urban and all-terrain models on sale, as well as the accessories and tools needed to care for
your prized possession! Sportswear clothing is becoming very popular and certain brands have taken advantage
of this new trend by offering a look inspired by locker room chic!

HEALTHY EATING
> Eat good food, on the go!
If you need to grab a quick lunch, the French capital has numerous restaurants with tasty menus consisting of
organic ingredients, without additives or conservatives. One of the big trends at the moment are salad/soup bars,
that can be found in almost all districts, serving a soup of the day or a salad that you can make up yourself by
adding ingredients of your choice to a base of lettuce leaves.
Treat yourself to a smoothie at any time of the day! You will feel immediately revived after drinking one of these
delicious concoctions, rich in vitamins and pure fruit and vegetable juices, freshly squeezed, shaken or blended in
front of you. If you’re feeling adventurous, try one of the more unusual smoothie combinations.

> Food shopping
Fair trade, natural or organic products, reduced fat or dietary products are more and more common: as well as
the numerous grocery stores specializing in healthy and fair trade food products, many wine stores are now also
specializing in ‘natural’ wines, coming from pesticide-free vineyards and manufactured according to artisanal
methods. Several joint initiatives have followed this trend, allowing Parisians to forge a community spirit. An
example of such an initiative is the community supported agriculture groups springing up all over the city: these
community groups favour family farming, and promote partnerships between consumers and local farms. They
also organize regular sales for the harvested farm produce. Another similar initiative is the community gardens
run by association members and bringing life and a touch of nature to urban areas.
A visit to a French market is the perfect way to observe Parisians as they go about their daily business. Some
markets specialize in organic or regional produce and make for a pleasant stroll amongst rows of fruit and vegetables; organic cheeses, jams, etc.
Some more exotic shops sell healthy, natural goods coming mainly from Latin America: unusual and sometimes
surprising tastes and textures, as well as traditional recipes are all waiting to be discovered!
