On avait d'abord propose de prolonger la construction du F-104G, dont 125 pour Tarmee de Pair italienne etaient presque acheves, par une commande supplemental de 40 avions, mais en l'absence d'autre chasseur susceptible d'etre construit sous licence— le Northrop F-5, Mirage III et Phantom, entre autres, avaient ete consideres—il est probable qu'une commande supplementaire. qui peut atteindre 180 avions, soit passee. Et ces commandes ne comptent pas les 12 TF-104G bi-places assembles a partir de pieces fournies par Lockheed et les 75 mono-place construits pour rAllemangne et pour les Pays Bas.
