Tourism : This region of France bathes in history, medieval castles, 100 years war… it is very rich, as are most parts of
France (we are not being chauvinistic, not much that is). We have compiled below several links which should help you
discover the region. Hopefully the weather will be perfect. Tourism in the Dordogne has become a highly developed
activity. If possible, try to take some time off to visit at least the château de Beynac. It is also the main foie gras
producing region of France, so…
This venue is an excellent opportunity to discover the exceptional sights in the area : bastide of Domme, Sarlat the
medieval city, troglodyte village at La Roque-Gageac, château de Beynac, château de Castelnaud...)

Sarlat, capital of the black Périgord noir, was founded in
the 9th century by monks fleeing from bloody Normand
intrusions who sailed upstream along the Dordogne and
the Vizère. During the 14th century, as it prospered, Sarlat
became a Bishopry. Its population was then 6000. Despite
epidemics its vigorous commerce favoured growth which
lead the local bourgeoisie to build numerous buildings
continuously up to the 18th century. The 100 Years War
and later the Wars of Religion played havoc on the city. It
was taken by the Protestants in February 1574 and fell
back in the hands of the Catholics in May. It became as of
1591 the nerve centre for those who did not recognize the
authority of king Henry IV. The city reverted to peaceful
conditions after the king’s conversion to Roman
Catholicism. From The 18th century to the revolution, the city was quiet, its population had declined to 4000. In 1962
Sarlat profited from the Malraux laws on the preservation of historical monuments. Extensive works were undertaken,
today Sarlat is one of the historical urban jewels of France.
The château de Castelnaud was founded in the 12th
century and later became the property of the Cathar Lord
Bernard de Casnac early 13th century. It was then taken
by Simon de Montfort in 1214 during the crusade against
the Albigeois. At which time a new caste gets built. The
dungeon and the main wall still stand today. The English
managed to take the castle several times during the 100
Years War, the French finally held onto it as of 1442, after
a siege ordered by Charles VII. The castle today,
classified as a historical monument since 1966, has
profited from numerous spectacular restoration campaigns
and has been hosting since 1985 the Medieval Warfare
Museum.
The Lascaux Caves is one of the most important
decorated caves due to the quantity and aesthetic
qualities of the Paleolithic era. Cro Magnon may be
considered one of humanity’s first artists.
As one contemplates paintings in the ornate caves of the
Vizère valley, one is struck with admiration for the
expressiveness and for the clever use of supports.
