Amnesty International will be launching a campaign on
Refugees in an effort to strengthen global responsibilitysharing and international cooperation in ensuring the
protection of the human rights of Refugees. In the
lead-up to the high-level UN meeting on Refugees and
Migrants in New York, the Amnesty Regional Hub for
East Africa, the Horn and the Great Lakes presents
a cartoon exhibition featuring cartoonists from Kenya,
Sudan, Tanzania, South Africa, Nigeria and Somalia.
The exhibition is an invitation to the public to reflect on
refugee situation and encourage a welcoming attitude.
‘A l’ombre de Coré’ (‘In the shadows of Kore’ - the Greek
Maiden) is a poetic hip hop dance choreography by the French dancer/choreographer Mickaël Six
and the talented dancer Sami Loviat-Tapie. The choreography presents a poetic dialogue between
the body and light, between the real and the virtual. Like the Goddess Kore, the dancers take it in
turns to confront thier shadows. The delicate music and the fluidity of movement make this a truly
captivating show, an ingenious display of poetry in motion.
The dancers are on a 7-country Eastern Africa and Indian Ocean tour supported by Institut Français,
the French International Agency for Cultural Cooperation.
Amnesty International and the Rfit Valey Institute have invited the
British writer and former researcher for Human Rights Watch in the
Horn of Africa, Ben Rawlence (River Congo and City of Thorns), to
participate in a discussion on the closure of the Daadab Camp. On
this occasion, John Sibi-Okumu, Kenyan writer, actor and journalist,
will host Ben Rawlence in a literary conversation on his book ‘City
of Thorns’ which interweaves the stories of nine individuals to show
what life is like in the world’s largest refugee camp.

The important place music and dance occupy in most African societies
is largely recognized. The French Institute for Research in Africa
(iFRA) and the Technical University of Kenya invite researchers,
students, artists and the general public, interested in music and dance
research in the East African region, to a 2 day forum. The forum
will critically interrogate issues concerning the creation (composition
and choreography), tradition, innovation, and appropriation in music and dance with regard to the
construction of national and ethnic identities, political and social activism, heritage preservation,
cultural tourism, gender and generational issues, etc. Exchanges will be followed by performances
by the Technical University of Kenya students.

Afrika Handmade Symposium and Gallery is a market development initiative of Craft Afrika.
The event’s objective is to identify and nurture domestic demand for locally produced home decor
and home textile products.
One of the biggest challenges that faces the artisan and design sector in Kenya is the inability to
successfully tap into the domestic market either due to the unflattering perception of the sector as
the purveyor of cheap, mass produced, low quality souvenirs and curios, or scant knowledge of
the evolution that has taken place in the sector, or perhaps a narrow and weak distribution network
comprising a handful of craft fairs and retail stores.
Afrika Handmade Gallery recognizes the need to re-position the sector through a highly curated and
niche showcase offering a fresh perspective where the exhibitors only exhibit never seen before
products, and the potential consumers experience a contemporary genre of artisan and design
products that are trendy, available and affordable
The 3rd edition exhibiting partners include: TwobyFour, Anselm Kitengela Glass, Quinn Peaks,
Seedling Kenya, Uganda Crafts, Byentaro Ceramics, Tribal Gallery, Fired Earth, Esprit
Ethnique, Simply Sandara, One Off Gallery, La Palette, Elementaita Weavers, Décor Interiors,
High Street Kenya, Kasigau Weavers and Concepts & Details.
Running concurrent to the Gallery is a 2-day symposium with international and local speakers
discussing emerging practice along the artisan and design value chain and branding in addition to
exchanging ideas and resources as well as networking.

October 1941. Eighteen months into France’s occupation by German troops, young Communist members of the Resistance shoot
dead an officer of the German Army. In retaliation, Hitler demands
the deaths of 150 Frenchmen, as ‘retribution’. Events are recounted
through the eyes of 17 yr-old communist Guy Môquet, who was one
of the victims of this act of retribution, as well as the eyes of a German soldier, who was a member of the firing squad.
