Call for papers TOURISM BUSINESSES AS KEY DRIVERS OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT A Symposium on Measuring the Performance and Economic Contribution of Tourism Montreal Convention Center, Quebec, Canada, September 24-25, 2012 CONFERENCE AIMS AND SCOPE To mark its 20th anniversary, the Transat Chair in Tourism of Université du Québec à Montréal’s (UQAM) School of Management is planning an international symposium to examine tourism as a lever for economic development. Some of the topics to be discussed: better defining tourism's contribution to a regional or national economy; taking inventory of and studying the various evaluation tools currently in use; identifying the presence and relevance of evaluation criteria for business projects; integrating certain key indicators into a business plan so public or private financing can be justified on the basis of facts, not assumptions; evaluating tourism’s impact on economic growth and productivity. This event will be held September 24-25, 2012, in Montreal, a tourist destination and the point of arrival for the majority of Quebec’s foreign visitors. MAIN RESEARCH TOPICS Papers must address one of the following topics: Theoretical approaches to measuring tourism Case studies of companies, destination management organizations or regional or sector-based associations that have implemented tourism measurement tools A theoretical discussion of how tourism stakeholders can use quantitative methods for management or strategic planning Performance measurement models that produce outputs such as better profitability, increased competitiveness, enhanced market position, etc. How economics, information technologies, management sciences or any other relevant discipline contribute to the definition and applicability of tourism evaluation tools and their individual components Any related topics of interest to an overall understanding of the current issues facing companies, organizations or destinations with regard to the evaluation and measurement of tourism P.O. Thus the abstract should clearly communicate the objective of the work, the results and their significance, and the advancement over previous work. Time and effort spent constructing a clear, concise, and well-written abstract will maximize the chances of paper acceptance. Abstracts must be submitted by email ([email protected]) no later than the submission deadline of June 1st, 2012. The abstract title should be brief (no more than 20 words). The abstract body should be between 300 and 450 words and must include a brief summary as well as methods, results, and conclusion(s), where appropriate. All submissions will be subject to a double-blind review. FULL PAPERS Full papers should be between 3000 and 5000 words in length (including figures and references). All papers should be written in good English or French. The title should be in bold. Author's affiliations and e-mail addresses for corresponding authors should be included. Text should be kept to a minimum, and each block of text should include no more than a few sentences. Suggested font size for the body of text is Times New Roman 12 pt. Papers that are accepted by the scientific committee members will be published, following the symposium, in a special edition of the Research Papers of the Transat Chair in Tourism . P.O.
