Dr. Séverine Louvel graduated in 2001 in sociology and economics from the ENS Cachan
(Ecole nationale Supérieure de Cachan, Paris).
She earned a PhD in organizational sociology from Grenoble University in 2005.
Since 2007 she is assistant professor in sociology at the Grenoble Institute for Political
Studies (IEP Grenoble) and director of the master programme “technology, science and
politics” proposed by the Grenoble Institute for Political Studies and by the Grenoble
Institute of Technology.
Her teaching areas cover methods in sociology, organizational behaviour, and sociology of
science.
She is also researcher at the Department for Innovation Studies at the PACTE research
centre (CNRS and Grenoble Institute for Political Studies)
Her PhD focuses the transformations of public research organizations since the 1960s in the
case of the French “mixed research units”. Drawing on an ethnographic approach, her work
shows how changes in the governance of the French public science system impact, at the
level of the research unit, the implementation of scientific strategies, the career
management of academics, the access to financial resources, and the work relationships.
Her current research interests include academic careers (glass ceiling, career scripts of
senior academics, early academic careers); politics of higher education and research in
Europe (comparison of governance structures in the European University Field, rise of
research evaluation), and the institutionalization of nanosciences and nanotechnologies
(emergence of a job market for “nanoscientists” and “nanoengineers”, development of new
curricula).
