My interdisciplinary research interests lie in fifteenth- and sixteenth-century manuscripts and books,
especially books of hours, women’s patronage at the French and Burgundian courts, and the relationships
between text and image. Current and future projects include:
 Anne de Graville’s Library: Anne de Graville (1490), lady-in-waiting to Queen Claude of France, owned a
substantial library and was herself an author and an early supporter of religious reform. Her reworkings
of Boccaccio’s Teseida and Alain Chartier’s Belle Dame sans mercy for Queen Claude show a close
engagement with neo-classical literary trends and the querelle des femmes. However, Anne has been
overlooked in studies of late-medieval French courtly and religious culture. The aim of this project is to
produce the first modern monograph that examines Anne’s extant library in detail and assesses her
contribution to religious and literary debates in early sixteenth-century France. The first stage of this
research is supported by the British Academy’s Neil Ker Memorial Fund; initial findings are being
presented at Locating Boccaccio in 2013 (John Rylands, Manchester) and in Text/Image Relations in Late
Medieval French Culture (forthcoming 2014).
 MS Wittert 29 and the Bellemare Group: This project involves the close stylistic, codicological, and
technical analysis of an unknown book of hours in Liège University Library. The manuscript is a late work
of the Bellemare Group that offers important clues to the workshop’s production beyond its heyday of
the 1520s. My recent and forthcoming papers and publications on this manuscript (Berlin, San Diego,
Peter Lang 2014) not only present this book of hours to scholars for the first time but also, significantly,
examine its relationship to other works of sixteenth-century French manuscript illumination such as the
Statutes of the Order of St Michael in John Rylands Library (French MS 141).
 Making Sacred Space: Evanescence and Permanence in Medieval Devotion: an interdisciplinary project
with Professor Andrew Kirkman examining how impermanent phenomena (visual, audio, olfactory,
tactile) energised or enlivened fixed structures or objects such as chapels, panel paintings, stained glass,
liturgical manuscripts, books of hours and funerary monuments, thus contributing to the overall
experience of rituals such as the Mass as well as less structured devotional practices like pilgrimage and
personal prayer. Two workshops are planned with HE and non-HE partners in the UK and Europe for
October 2013 with a view to making a major European funding bid (e.g. Consolidator Grant).
