Alain Chevalier Directeur du TURLg 3 Message from the Congress Director On behalf of the team of the TURLg, I would like to welcome all the participants to the 10 th Congress of the International University Theatre Association. It is always a pleasure to host you since the first Congress in Liège that was held in 1994 in line with our annual International Meetings of University Theatre (RITUs). This first Congress had seen the foundation of our association, what was not going to be an easy thing—those who were there could remember that. Since then, the IUTA has known a rise and a standing all over the world, which legit imate the efforts of its founding members 20 years ago. The TURLg has always wanted to be involved in this great international development and promotion project of the university theatre, as the 12 signatories of the Charter of Liège wanted us to. We have managed to reach their purposes in inviting regularly the executive Committee of the Association to our RITUs so that they could have their annual statutory meeting. We are pleased to contribute to it by establishing this reflexive week of exchanges that will be part of this 10 th Congress. Organizing this congress was also for us the occasion to consolidate our previous partnerships as well as to install new collaborations. We would like to thank those without whom the project would not be possible. Our thanks also go to the university authorities who have been supporting us for many years; we also would like to thank the departments of the University of Liège that helped us to prepare this event properly, the Department of Arts and Sciences of Communication, the Master in Interpretation of the Department of modern Languages and Literatures and the service of External Relations and Communication. Last but not least, thank you to the members of the IUTA Comex to have allowed us to hold this Congress and we particularly would like to thank the team from the University of Montreal which, supervised by our chairman JeanMarc Larrue, managed to handle the implementation of the scientific calendar of the Congress. These collaborations let foresee a fruitful congress. Great job everyone! JeanMarc Larrue Président 6 Opening Remarks from the IUTA President The International University Theatre Association is very pleased to be holding its 10 th World Congress here at the Uni versity of Liège, where the association came into existence just 20 years ago in 1994. So much has been accomplished since then—nine world congresses, seven international publications, tens of national and regional gatherings, and hundreds of festivals—all this progress bears witness to the tremendous vitality of university theatre in many parts of the world. Twenty years ago, we wagered that it was necessary to break down different kinds of walls—not only those between the ory and practice but also those affecting cultural activity programs and the structured teaching of spontaneous amateur initiatives. In a nutshell, we wanted to bring together everyone responsible for making theatre such a vital part of campus life. Clearly, we were right, as evidenced by the vitality that we observe exemplified in the IUTA congresses. In 1994, there were, to our knowledge, barely 10 university festivals, whereas today we now count more than 150, with new ones sprouting every month—initiatives that are all the more welcome because, in most cases, they combine performances with training and discussion forums. This 10th congress is taking place at a time when modern universities are experiencing the worst crisis in their history, characterized by a breakdown of traditional boundaries between academic disciplines as well as between theory and practice (including creative work) combined with a serious questioning of the relationship between universities and cer tain major social features society like government, community and markets. Theatre is also undergoing radical changes that are challenging the very foundations of its episteme due to the joint impact of the accelerated hybridization of artistic and media practices and the omnipresence of digital technologies—witness, for example, the number of theatrical shows that now include video projections or make use of the Internet. That is why it is essential for us in this troubled context to not only question the role and specific character of university theatre (such as our teaching practices and the IUTA’s own role), but also reassess our attitude towards rapidly changing realities like theatre and society, including our attitude to wards the students we train—whether in accredited, supervised activities or in the more extracurricular cultural activities that are also part of university life. Our founding president Robert Germay always emphasized the importance of repertoire—whether artistic or pedago gical—in the practice of university theatre. Albeit sidelined for many years along with the texts, this exploration of reper toire, which is the theme of this 10th World Congress, brings us back to what unites us and the very foundations of theatre —whether the masterpieces of the theatrical canon or fresh forms of theatrical writing that correspond more to a new “sharing of the sensory,” as evoked by philosopher Jacques Rancière. In closing, I would particularly like to thank the colleagues, researchers, artists, administrators, facilitators and students who are here to share with us their knowledge and expertise. I would also like to express my profound gratitude to our colleagues from the Theâtre Universitaire Royal de Liège (TURLg), especially Alain Chevalier et Robert Germay, as well as our colleagues at the University of Liège together with the university authorities for their tremendous efforts on our behalf. Our hosts have devoted considerable attention and energy over the past two years to the preparation of this gath ering. I therefore wish everyone a most memorable congress, rich in interaction and discussion—a communitybuilding con gress that will exemplify and celebrate our richness, diversity and vitality. So welcome to the 10th IUTA world congress and welcome to Liège! 19 Conférences plénières Monday, June 30, 16:30 – 18:00 Location: ULg, Salle Académique Opening Ceremony Guest of Honor: Le Théâtre du Soleil (Theatre of the Sun), Paris, France On the occasion of this 10th Congress, IUTA would like to welcome warmly the Théâtre du Soleil (Theatre of the Sun) as a guest of honor. This magnificent project borne by Ariane Mnouchkine occupies a specific place in the French theatre realm and finds its essence in a student adventure: the Theatrical Association of Parisian students (ATEP). Fifty years ago, on May 29, 1964, the Théâtre du Soleil was born as a Working Co operative Society of Production founded by students from Sorbonne. Five years earlier, two of them—Ariane Mnouchine and Martine Franck—had created the ATEP, whose activities were varied (organization of theatre classes for students as well as conferences, reception of foreign theatre companies, creation of shows). One after the other and in line with this project, the Théâtre du Soleil, constructs itself un der the guidance of Ariane Mnouchkine but always in a collective perspective. This company, in the strong sense of the term, which settled in the buildings of an ancient cartridge factory in Vincenne in 1970, proposes a real theatrical and human experi ence, where the audience is welcomed with great care. Ariane Mnouchkine still tears the tickets at the theatre entrance and the doors open an hour before the show, “when it is ready,” which means when dinner is served. Welcoming this renowned company for the 20th anniversary of our association is without any doubt of particular significance. 23 Conférences plénières Tuesday, July 1, 11:00 – 12:30 Location: ULg, Salle Académique Keynote Address 1 Artistic Practice, Research Practice: Forms of Mediation and Construction of Knowledge Nancy Delhalle, Christine Servais, Lemme, Université de Liège, Belgique We propose to consider the links that can be forged between artistic practice and re search practice. After some considerations related to our respective fields of studies (theater studies and mediation), we would like to open the debate with the assembly and exchange experiences and points of view of researchers and practitioners. While it is common to establish a partition between theory and practice—this dis tinction taking the form of separate training course—imperatives of reconciliation have emerged in recent years. There is little doubt that they are in part due to eco nomic factors that control rationalization or legitimization processes. The fact re mains, however, that collaborations between cultural institutions, artists, theater structures and universities are increasing everywhere, for the organization of confer ences or meetings, the implementation of joint actions, etc. The forms and issues of such crossings raise questions and are vectors of problems we would like to sketch out. Information and Communication Sciences, based on observation, analysis and criti cism of the practices of production, distribution and reception of approaches and works provide a privileged frame in order to consider, perhaps even to undertake the mingling of the points of view. In our fields of research, theory does not develop prior to a practice for which it would then prescribe the method or evaluate the merits; it observes, conceptualizes, criticizes, or even develops its own designs independently. On their side, practition ers are implementing tools for describing and evaluating their own work, and im pose, because each work takes place in an always singular context, limits to any the orizing. Relationships between practitioners and researchers are therefore very com plex and become still more complex as they are intensifying. Located at the crossroad of the artistic and the academic world, and belonging in a special way to both worlds, University Theatre offers a privileged opportunity for a research on the encounter between these practices, on their borders and on the res ulting hybridization. The concept of aesthetic mediation, by the fact that it thinks the question of art as a device, and questions it from the sensory, but also from the social and political ex perience of the recipients, could be an interesting point of entry to address the artist ic and the research practices as social figuration, gesture in which we believe those two practices are likely to agree. 24 Conférences plénières We thus propose to consider the following areas: 1 the knowledge produced by the two practices, including knowledge on the part of the receiver, receiver of the artistic performance on the one hand, and object of knowledge on the other; 2 the audiences concerned by these knowledge and their relations; 3 the social and scientific legitimacy of hybrid practices. 28 Conférences plénières Tuesday, July 2, 11:00 – 12:30 Location: ULg, Salle Académique Keynote Address 2 Contemporaneous Writings and Theatrical Practices: Tomorrow’s Repertoire is Built Today Émile Lansman, Publisher and exdirector of the Frenchspeaking Belgian theatreeducation association, Belgium For more than thirty years, the amount of drama authors has not ceased to increase as well as—consequently—the amount of available plays, in their original language or translated. However, until recently, most of these new authors were read, awarded and poten tially published but not much played. Fortunately, a mediation wave has been de veloping in order to encourage and facilitate the meeting between some of these plays and the ones who stage them: theatrical companies, professional or not, uni versity collectives, workshops for young people in and out of school Emile Lansman will try to highlight the mutual contribution of this meeting between the contemporaneous practices and writings, giving birth to a repertoire of plays that open windows to today’s world and establish a real dialogue between actors, authors and spectators. 31 Détail des sessions – Mardi, 1 juillet Session 1 (suite) Paper Experimental Theatre Context as Personal and Professional Laboratory Communication Le contexte du théâtre expérimental comme laboratoire personnel et professionnel Comunicación El contexto del teatro experimental como laboratorio personal y profesional Dennis Beck et Tom King, James Madison University, Harrisonburg, United States of America This presentation examines modern purposes of educational theatre and how they are supported by repertory choices and creative/production contexts. If college is a laboratory, then one of the primary purposes of higher education is to function as learning and testing ground for artistic and disciplinary practices, knowledge, and possibilities. Many facultydirected productions, however, needing to showcase a department’s “best” work, rehearse productoriented values and hier archical structures, putting students into subaltern, employeelike positions. These may be effective training grounds for jobs within theatrical organizations that repro duce corporate models, but not for much of today’s theatre in which participants are expected to devise pieces, work in an auteur manner, and utilize skills and sensibilit ies of more than one theatre area. If a higher education in theatre is to fulfill its promise as a laboratory, different models are necessary that cultivate the develop ment of theatre artists, risktakers, and autonomous creative thinkers. The Experi mental Theatre at JMU functions in such a way, as a place apart, an environment in which overriding commercial, authoritarian, and popular pressures can be held in abeyance so that students may develop capacities that will serve them as theatre artists, professionals in various professions, and mature, contributing members of society. The proposed paper examines the methods and contexts the Experimental Theatre offers—designed to undermine hierarchical models and emphasize discov ery—that enable this sphere and its experiences to cultivate abilities and qualities that serve individual success within both theatrical and nontheatrical fields. 32 Détail des sessions – Mardi, 1 juillet Session 2 Session 2 Sesión 2 09:00 – 10:30 Théâtre universitaire et résistance I University Theatre and Resistance I Teatro universitario y resistencia I Président / Chair / Presidente: Lieu / Location / Lugar: Rob Brannen Salle Académique Paper University Theatre: To Resist or Not to Resist Communication Le théâtre universitaire : Résister ou ne pas résister ? Comunicación El teatro universitario: ¿resistir o no resistir? Katsiaryna Saladukha, Belarusian State University, Minsk, Belarus It is believed that University Theatre is an alternative. Besides all the other things it presents an alternative to professional theatre, being comparatively free in the choice of repertoire. It depends mainly on the taste of a director and students. It is also believed the basic force behind the theatre groups is the students’ will to create and search for answers to the pressing issues of life, to understand the mean ing of existence and the essence of service to the truth, while enjoying the special freedom of university theatre. But is there such a freedom for every university theatre? Could it be so that the only way to tell the truth is to perform at a festival? Or shall a university theatre be brave and resist all kind of oppressions, play a revolutionary role either in arts or life? These and other issues are to be raised and offered for discussion in the paper. Marginality and Diversity for a New Theater of Social Inclusion Communication Marginalité et diversité pour un nouveau théâtre d’inclusion sociale Comunicación Marginalidad y diversidad para un nuevo teatro de inclusión social Vito Minoia, Urbino University, Urbino, Italy At Urbino University, Aenigma Theatre, publisher of the European magazine “Te atri delle diversità” (Theatres of Diversities), experiments a theatre research model that has produced, for the last 20 years, a repertory of paradigmatic expressive paths with disabled people, prisoners and people with psychic disease. Following the rut of a phenomenon that is developing more and more internation ally, the author will try to suggest a way to clarify the epistemological basis of the New Theatre of Social Inclusion through the concepts of Marginality and Diversity. This New Theater can be defined as a practice with specific methodologies that con sists in a team of competent professionals in theatre and wellness promotion fields working with groups or citizens community—often disadvantaged. They realize theatre’s paths, performances and projects with cultural, civil and artistic purposes and with the aim to promote psychosocial wellness. Paper 33 Détail des sessions – Mardi, 1 juillet Session 2 (suite) The Social Inclusion Theater is contiguous and similar to the research theatre, both in its development and in methodological/creative diversifications, and for this it takes part in languages and techniques renewal: therefore, it is a cultural and artistic capital in the area of theatre tout court, which it necessarily belongs to. Some artists experience the work in the research theatre with citizens or people who live in particular discomfort conditions—facing the differences (an essential term in general theatre, but still more in the social one). These experiences have created con taminations and nutriment, filtering from one side to the other, with continuous as similations between Art theatre and Social inclusion Theatre: this helped to draw a various area, with many contacts between art, theatre and sociality. Chilean University Theater or Theater of the Resistance. Experimentation and Creation during the Dictatorship of Pinochet Communication Le théâtre universitaire chilien ou le théâtre de la résistance. Ensayos y creaciones bajo la dictadura de Pinochet Natalia Alejandra Sanchez Muñoz, University of Los Lagos, Chile Topic: University theatre: experimentation and new works (historical and/or con temporary perspectives) Chilean theater history changed drastically during the military dictatorship of Pinochet. Because every intellectual activity was seen as a threat to the regime therefore, art and theater were identified as enemies of the country. During the dictatorship, many innocent people were killed, imprisoned, tortured and exiled, meaning that the country lived under a terrible repression and violence. Therefore, much of the country suffered enormous restrictions, which in one way or another killed the progressive spirit, which sought to create a more egalitarian soci ety. In this scenario, the university theater, was one of the few centers of creation and experimentation, in which the actors, directors, writers and technicians could sur vive and respond to the terrible scene that the dictatorship had created. Therefore, after the first year of the dictatorship, the university theater began to rise again, to contribute to the rearticulation of national consciousness in the field of fragmentation of authoritarianism, thus, they created the theater of resistance. It is not the intention to suggest what are those principles because the university theat er groups are formed and students participate in it for a number of reasons and goals: artistic, social, political, emotional, pedagogical, institutional... During 20 years of running the student theater studio and working on more than 40 student theater productions as a director / Dramaturg / producer there was not one case that I made the repertory decision apriori, independently of members—students of the theater group. Over the years I have developed tools that allow me, in collabora tion with all the participants of each theater project, to make quality decisions about what and how to play. These tools I would like to share with other interested theater practitioners. Ethnicity refers the Bengali identity. Islamic theatre of Bangladesh reframes such kind of cul tural identity that simultaneously contains religiosity as Islam and ethnicity as Bengali. It is that Islam which rejects the institutionalized bureaucratic form of reli gion and of militant violent terrorist lifethreatening Islam. In case of Islamic theatre of Bangladesh, we can conclude that cultural identity framed as locational but can have a spiritual solution with a universal meaning. Again here I can rearticulate Augusto Boal’s words of wisdom, “[s]o theatre does not exist in the objectivity of bricks and mortar, sets and costumes, but in the subjectivity of those who practise it, at the moment when they practise it. It needs neither stage nor audience; the actor will suffice. With the actor is born the theatre. The actor is theatre. We are all actors: we are theatre!” And “we” means the universal human beings. 40 Détail des sessions – Mardi, 1 juillet Session 6 (suite) Paper Drama Therapy as Part of University Theater Repertoire in an Era of Climate Change Communication La thérapie par le théâtre comme faisant partie du répertoire du théâtre universitaire à une époque marquée par le changement climatique Comunicación La terapia por el teatro como haciendo parte del repertorio del teatro universitario en una época caracterizada por cambios climáticos Arsenio “Nick” J. Lizaso, Philippine Christian University, Manila, Philippines Climate Change is now a reality. Its impact on our lives should be an international concern, as no less than the United Nations have already raised the alarm in a recent report, pointing to killer heat waves in Europe, wildfires in the United States, droughts in Australia and deadly flooding in Mozambique, Thailand and Pakistan, and catastrophic typhoon in the Philippines which highlight how vulnerable hu manity is to extreme weather, according to the report from the Nobel Prizewinning group of scientists. The dangers are going to worsen as the climate changes even more, the report’s authors said. What can be the role of university theater in an era of Climate Change? One way is to make drama therapy become a part of the repertoire of university theater groups to help the survivors cope with the effects of natural calamities in their respective communities. This is within the scope of the Congress theme which seeks to strengthen, transform and enrich the world’s theatrical repertoire by addressing such areas as the question of social engagement, as well as validating theoretical models. The proposed presentation will show how drama therapy is being applied among adults and children living in Philippine areas adversely affected by calamities. This will be done through lecture, demonstration and discussion supported by images and video footages to be projected on the big screen. The objective is to offer a model for other theater groups which may want to use as well drama therapy in post calamity rehabilitation activities in their own countries. 41 Détail des sessions – Mardi, 1 juillet Session 7 Session 7 Sesión 7 14:00 – 15:30 Demonstration Démonstration Demostración Lieu / Location / Lugar: AJ, Salle Ville de Liège Terminal One: A ‘Suitcase Study’ in Transatlantic Performance Terminal Un : une étude de cas dans la performance transatlantique Terminal Uno: Un caso de estudio en la prestación transatlántica Brian Shaw, Columbia College, Chicago, United States of America Peter McDermott, Dublin Institute of Technology Conservatory of Music and Drama, Dublin, Ireland In fall/winter of 2014, the Theatre Department of Columbia College Chicago and the Conservatory of Music and Drama of the Dublin Institute of Technology collabor ated to devise the original performance Terminal One. In this paper I intend to ‘put my money where my mouth is’ and suggest criteria that might be used in choosing plays to be performed in university theatres. I will argue that we, as university theatre practitioners, have a responsibility to navigate a diffi cult course between the Scylla and Charybdis of education and entertainment in choosing texts for performance and, using British theatre as a focus, suggest some suitable texts for consideration. In his 1936 essay Entertainment or Education Brecht examined these twin characteristics of theatre with regard to his theory of Epic Theatre. And countries like India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan etc. can also be put in the same category. The phrase ‘university theatre’ has not so far gained any popular or recognizable currency in these coun tries. However, the drama departments of the universities of Bangladesh put quite a significant weight on the applied aspects of theatrical studies visàvis the structured academic courses. The very geopolitical status of Bangladesh and the realities of its socioeconomic structures impacted on curriculum design and further, the ‘learning outcomes’ of the students. The long history of colonial rule had impact on the au thorship and development of dramatic literature and practices inevitably led to an eloquent intellectual debate underlining a ‘cultural hegemony’. Theatre as an act of representation has played the significant role since it primarily demands the atten tion/applause of the audience which, pronounces a critical preference for under standing the contemporary to the faithful exposition of themes of the texts. The re readings of the classical/modern texts both of native and imported origin excite the students to reinterpret the contents. And subsequently, a new procreative incentive generates amongst them to restructure, to add new values, to inject innovation, to re cast characters or transfer contexts. Students and the teachers in the university theatre in Bangladesh are continuously and irresistibly drawn to new experimenta tion, adaptation, translocation and appropriation not only of the text materials but also of the modes of style, rituals and representations, strengthened more in the con temporary times by the use of digital technology. This trajectory was marked by the contact with different cultural realities, which contributed to the acknowledgement and assimilation of other social, political and cultural realities overtime. This was achieved through festivals, directors, texts and publications. Therefore, the development of different aesthetical languages and the experimentation of various work processes was possible, which would convert the university theatre into a significant reference in the Portuguese cultural scene. One of the most significant contributes in the evolution of the Portuguese university theatre results from the great influence of some foreign directors, namely Juan Car los OIviedo, Adolf Gutkin, Victor García and Ricart Salvat which in diverse ways, artistically marked the university collectives. It is true that conditions of modern life, particularly in America, have made it a business as well”—Harold Clurman Universities, as originally conceived in the 12th century, strove to be true engines of selfperfection, in the Aristotelian sense. In addition to the philosophical component, these universities had a practical mission imbued with scholarly objectives that was epistemologically different from those schools that focused on preparing the student for a trade or occupation. What we find in today’s university institution, due to global economics and business pressures of selffunding among other factors, is the need to fulfill both the scholarly and the practical, but now with a lean towards the practical. Universities have the additional pressure to prepare students not only for a profession but to find jobs in their market, de facto steering and shaping schools, particularly theatre schools, into trade schools whose mission is to place those students into lucrative or at least self supporting jobs. In this climate, it is essential for universities, for the actor and theatre culture to find the balance between the development of knowledge and the practical application. This paper will explore the ongoing trends in contemporary American university theatre towards a focus on teaching students at a practical level through repertoire. Anne Fliotsos, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, United States of America Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) is one of several models that have ig nited artists around the globe to identify oppression and enact possible solutions. In the United States, groups like the Living Theatre, the Open Theatre, and the Bread & Puppet Theatre have also promoted theatre for social change. On university cam puses interactive theatre troupes often fulfill this role. Through a repertoire of short interactive scenes, interactive theatre groups offer students, staff, and teachers the chance to examine problematic situations both in and outside of the classroom. Despite the popularity of interactive theatre groups at universities, little research has been done. How many universities offer this type of theatre troupe? What are their goals and outcomes? How are these programs funded and how are they assessed? How similar or dissimilar are they? My research begins with a survey of universities in the United States, conducted in collaboration with Katherine Burke, President of Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed, Inc. Our next step will be to collect global data and raise new questions about the current status and future direction of inter active theatre in universities. It is our hope that this descriptive, comparative presentation will open the door for a broader discussion about interactive theatre at universities worldwide. Stanislavski: A Realistic Offer to University Theatre Repertoire Communication Stanislavski : une offre réaliste au répertoire du théâtre universitaire Comunicación Stanislavski: una oferta realista en el repertorio del teatro universitario Fatma Kandemir, Anadolu University, Turkey There have been different types of approaches on performing arts since its existence. From these approaches ‘Constantin Stanislavski’, having the revolutionary acting system, has an important place. The point of view on drama and acting has changed with him. Paper 62 Détail des sessions – Vendredi, 4 juillet Session 19 (suite) The reason why he keeps on his importance on performing arts and drama is that he is the person who has first laid the foundation of avantgarde theatre. Based on a realistic understanding of theatre, he showed up that by its content and style theatre was so far away from the ‘reality’ as not to be able to reflect the reality of a society which was living industrial period. It was the first avantgarde step to try to change the ‘perception of reality’ in drama. This first realistic step, which would open the gates for the avantgarde and contem porary theatre later, changed the traditional understanding and practices of the per forming arts both in itself and in the community. To create the avantgarde theatre foundation, thesis and antithesis based on or took reference Stanislavski. Dealing with a contemporary acting system, which is so popular and effective, will contribute to university theatre repertoire both in training and performing. Because generally in university theatres, the programs and the repertoires are based on the plays. So it’s important for a university theatre repertoire to give importance to have an acting training program such as ‘Stanislavski’s System’. In this study, the effects of Stanislavski on contemporary theatre will be discussed, while doing this the main points of why this acting system should be included in a university theatre repertoire will be handled to show the connection between ‘Stan islavski’ and ‘University Theatre Repertoire’. Many a solo show has grown from the need to tell one’s own story, the drive to tap into our common humanity in a way that only selfrevelation can accomplish. For the actor, the process can be both therapeutic and educational, stimulating a deeper knowledge of self and a deeper sense of connection to others. This premise, along with a desire to help students explore and express their stories, Paper 63 Détail des sessions – Vendredi, 4 juillet Session 19 (suite) was the inspiration for a new work presented as part of the 2012/13 season at Trinity Western University. Beginning with recollections and revelations of family, Picture This! became a funny, poignant, musical journey which was much more than the sum of its parts. While independent autobiography can create deeply compelling theatre, collectively creating from personal stories can be even more rewarding for participants and audience alike. Such investigations are not without their pitfalls. Acting is terribly vulnerable work and telling one’s own story is arguably the most risky. Those who wish to encourage students to explore personal stories must walk an ethical tightrope along the tension between artistic goals and psychological health. Issues of guidelines, safeguards, and the response of family must be carefully considered. Using this production as a case study, my presentation will offer a model for autobi ographical collective creation. Like the stories on which the show is based, this meth od is at once personal and universal; specific to time and place and transferable across continents and cultures. Forum) is the biggest uni versity theatre event in the Baltics. From similar events it stands out with its unique tradition to show the audience so called theatrical actions. These are brief theatrical performances shown in public places. Theatrical action is a mean to reveal main theme of the Forum: this is achieved by choosing thematically suitable places, con travening traditional forms of theatre, using additional means of expression, adjust ing to the chosen place and/or involving audience into the action. This year, the 15th Forum was held. So 15 themes all in all were introduced to the theatre community: from Shakespeare of the Youth in 2000 to Theatrical Reminiscences that was meant to mark the announced Year of the Theatre in Lithuania. 66 Détail des sessions – Vendredi, 4 juillet Session 22 (suite) The goal of my report is to introduce to the audience topics of the Forum, distin guish dominant theme groups (historical, of heritage and social) and using this to discuss repertoire formation of Lithuanian university theatres. I will take a look at repertoire of Lithuanian and foreign troupes in general (creators of theatrical actions were not only Lithuanians, but guests from foreign universities too). The Forum is the most important event in life of Lithuanian university theatres. The Forum committee is formed of directors and students and this determines the fact that not only artistic and social positions of directors are demonstrated, but of stu dents as well. Theatrical actions in most cases become a starting platform for young creators who later participate in creative education of younger generations. Universities are creating new conservatory style programs addressing the growing demand for this kind of training, but very few are providing coherent pedagogy, and instead are relying on eclectic and sometimes il logical methodologies. A musical theater artist’s success depends on his or her abil ity to integrate acting, singing and dance in a holistic manner, which should lead to a heightened sense of reality. Most pedagogy geared toward this style of performance does little to integrate all aspects of the training, which led to my research into new methodologies. My aim was to develop a new training that would not only integrate the various disciplines, but also potentially alter the aesthetics of musical theater in the wider arena of commercial theater. This paper will discuss my personal journey discovering a new methodology, sourced in the Suzuki Method, and my experi ments both in the classroom and in creating new works that lead to the integration of the various disciplines that comprise this style of performance. 69 Détail des sessions – Vendredi, 4 juillet Session 23 (suite) Paper Theatre Pedagogy: A Site of Tension Communication La pédagogie théâtrale : Un lieu de tension Comunicación La pedagogía teatral: Un lugar de tensión Cara Gargano, Long Island University (LIU Post), New York, United States of America In this paper I propose that there is no single answer to this dilemma and that we must consider maintaining a balance between historical precision in the classroom and preparing actors to create new and innovative work. I return to Peter Brook who reminds us that “the only way to find the true path to the speaking of a word is through a process that parallels the original creative one” (The Empty Space). The theatre has always been a site of tension, between tradition and innovation, and between the word and the body that inhabits it. The quarrel between the ancients and the moderns continues to this day, and reveals a deepseeded conflict regarding what theatre and theatre education should be. Directors and actors seek new ways to address urgent contemporary questions while publishers and historians want to as sure that productions are faithful recreations of the original. This is an even more urgent discussion in university theatre programs where our role is to educate students about the history of our art as well as to prepare them for a career in performance. How do we balance the need to impart historically accurate information and at the same time give students the tools to make choices that are honest and relevant for contemporary audiences? Pedagogy and Repertory: A Symbiotic Relationship Communication Pédagogie et répertoire : Une relation symbiotique Comunicación Pedagogía y repertorio: Una relación simbiótica Maria Porter, Long Island University/Post Campus, New York, United States of America While it may seem obvious that the pedagogy embedded in a program should dir ectly influence the choice and style of pieces produced at an academic institution, this is not always the case. Too often academic theaters feel an obligation to provide historical representations of productions to service the liberal arts aspect of theater degree programs. How then can the repertory of the producing organization of a theater program directly serve the philosophical foundations of the department? This paper examines the relationship of a specific program that has made a commit ment to preparing theater artists for the 21 st century through the use of nontradi tional training techniques such as The Suzuki Method, and the kinds of plays the in stitution produces that attempt to directly interface with the pedagogy. 71 Détail des sessions – Vendredi, 4 juillet Session 24 Session 24 Sesión 24 14:00 – 16:00 Workshop Atelier Taller Lieu / Location / Lugar: AJ, Salle Ville de Liège The Actor’s Corporal Language – Creative Movement Le langage corporel de l’acteur – mouvement créatif Lenguaje corporal del actor – movimiento creativo Cristina Rebelo Leandro, College of Education – Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra and Human Kinetics Faculty – University of Lisbon, Portugal Through the body we learn how to do, to meet others, to interact with space and to be—this body has a movement vocabulary as language, becoming a sensorial and perceptive instrument of learning. Additionally, the relationship between the body core, body parts and movement shall be reviewed, as well as the notion of verticality (alignment/posture and weight). Departing from the practical experimentation, the work methodology incorporates two lines of action—‘doing/feeling’ and ‘creating’. Within an individual process, but always in contact with others and space, the exercises approach will be in line with Laban’s theory, in the Release Technique and ContactImprovisation. This workshop aims to form a learning space in the movement language of each participant, through the embodiment of the physical and technical vocabulary of movement, as part of the actor’s language.
