Starvation Looms in Central African Republic - Nearly 30 children – the youngest a baby – died in the
past month fleeing violence in the Central African Republic (CAR), the United Nations refugee agency
today confirmed, renewing its appeal for $22 million in urgently-needed funds to help the growing
number of people taking “a journey of starvation and death” in search of safety in Cameroon. “Since
mid-April, the rate of deaths among refugee children has been particularly high,” Adrian Edwards,
spokesperson for the agency (UNHCR) said in Geneva. Between 14 April and 18 May, at least 29 children
died, most of them at therapeutic feeding centres, which they reached gravely ill.

Muslim youths mutilated in Central African Republic - At least three Muslim youths were killed and
mutilated by a Christian militia in Central African Republic while on their way play a reconciliation soccer
game on Sunday, organisers and a spokesman for the country's Muslim community said. The match
between Muslim and Christian youths was set up as part of efforts to forge a peace between mostly
Muslim Seleka rebels who seized power last year and the rival anti-bakala Christian militia, after a spiral
of intercommunal violence. "Their sex organs and hearts have been removed," Muslim community
spokesman Ousmane Abakar told Reuters.

French troops battle Muslim rebels in Central African Republic town - French peacekeeping troops in
Central African Republic used helicopter gunships and mortars on Saturday to fight Muslim rebels at a
bridge in the town of Bambari, northeast of the capital Bangui, a Reuters witness said. The clash is the
latest between fighters from the mostly Muslim rebel Seleka coalition and peacekeepers, and could
deepen antagonism in the north of the country towards French forces.
