21 ST CENTURY ARCHITECTURE
WILL BE ECOLOGICALLY SOUND
Architecture and the building industry are experiencing irreversible change. They are
discovering - or rediscovering through ecologically sound design - not only how to show
more respect for the environment, but also how to derive greater benefit from what it can
contribute, namely natural environmental comfort.
This is a matter for everyone involved, from designers to builders and including the
materials manufacturers, engineers, heating technicians and computer scientists. Every
sector has its part to play, in particular office buildings.
For its part, the world leader in motorisation and automated openings in buildings SOMFY - has fully anticipated this radical change, which will be the hallmark of the
architecture of our century.

SOMFY AT THE HEART
OF ENVIRONMENTAL
DESIGN
The environmental problem demands a multi-facetted technical response. This comprises a combination of solutions
which, between them, generate synergy effects which are all
the more positive, because they are integrated at the earliest
stages of the design process.
By the very nature of its solutions, SOMFY is playing its part in
the implementation of ecologically sound design.
Motorisation and the automated control of solar protection
devices and windows for natural ventilation are playing a
direct and quantifiable role in this process.
Thanks to its presence in every climatic region on five continents, SOMFY’s experience and solutions are unique.
THE ENVIRONMENT
IS A MATTER OF URGENCY
The Rio Declaration (1992), the Agendas 21 and the Kyoto
Protocol are all pointing in the same direction: Man must
quickly gain control of his consumption of energy. If nothing or very little - is done, climatic change and the greenhouse
effect will drastically disrupt the economy of the planet and
the quality of life of its inhabitants. Reducing energy consumption and the amount of waste products released into the
atmosphere by lowering the demand for heating and air conditioning is a feasible objective in the building industry, which
is responsible for nearly 20 % of CO2 emissions and almost 30
% of greenhouse gases. Techniques for controlling heat transfer through external walls are not only in sight, they are a
reality and, in addition, the ecologically sound office building
offers an unrivalled degree of living and working comfort. For
many years, with its products and research, SOMFY has consciously pursued an ecologically sound line of development
and this is why, to a great extent, the company’s solutions
have anticipated these requirements and expectations.
A LEGAL
OBLIGATION
Project managers and contractors are aware that sustainable development is becoming an obligation and this
is expressed by, among others, the European Directive on
Energy Conservation in Buildings (2002). Countries such as
Germany (EnEV), France (RT 2000), Switzerland (Minergie),
Scandinavia and the United States (Green Building, LEED) have
already introduced standards, constraints and financial assistance. Labels, such as the Passive Habitat in Germany, and
measures such as Haute Qualité Environmentale [High
Environmental Quality] in France are the subject of increasingly rich exchanges of experience.
Nowadays, invitations to tender and specifications in both the
private and public sectors reflect this dimension almost as a
matter of routine and, moreover, this is an irrefutable competitive and economic argument.
CONSIDERATION
FOR THE USER
SOMFY has a sound knowledge of users and their expectations, continuously enhanced by scientific research,
market surveys and consumer tests. It is equally evident that
the end user wishes to retain control of solar protection
devices in order to be able to create his own lighting environment. Varied working conditions (at the computer screen, on
paper, meetings involving the use of slides and OHP projectors) also demand a degree of design freedom.
SOMFY is placing all its accumulated knowledge at the disposal of the building profession, maintaining regular contact
in order to develop solutions, which promote the comfort of
these end users while conforming to environmental standards.

Solar protection and natural ventilation are two fundamental factors governing the environmental efficiency of
a building, in terms of controlling energy consumption as well as improving working conditions.
A pleasant visual appearance, combined with the ability to see outside and the feeling of breathing fresh and
replenished air are factors, which have a direct bearing on contentment and productivity. Moreover, users,
company medical departments and unions are becoming increasingly sensitive to the positive quality of
working conditions. Thus, when taken into consideration at the outset, investment in environmental design
creates profitability in two ways.
MAKING BETTER
USE OF
NATURAL LIGHT
It is perhaps easy to overlook the fact that natural light
is a necessity for human beings. A recent American
survey shows that 8 out of 10 employees suffer from inadequate lighting intensity in their offices and 3 out of 4 would
like to be able to control the lighting at their workplace. Many
scientific studies have demonstrated the importance of adequate natural light in relation to health, well-being and, in
turn, productivity.
Today, the rules for good lighting are well known. The Rule of
1/3/10 is applied by the majority of design offices. The fitting of
internal or external blinds in order to automatically or manually control the required lighting intensity, in conjunction
with artificial lighting, is a prerequisite for achieving the optimum lighting levels and ideal personalised working
conditions.
RULE 1/3/10
French technical standard NF X 35-103 specifies
the recommended lighting levels in an office.
The difference in luminosity between what is
perceived by the eye (a 30∞ cone) and the visual
task (a sheet of paper for example) should fall
within the ratio 1:3 and 1:10 between the
perceived luminosity (a 90∞ cone) and the
luminosity of the surfaces situated within the
field of view (a window for example). Without
solar protection, this visual comfort is seldom
attained during daylight hours.
CREATING
AND ENHANCING
NATURAL VENTILATION
Natural ventilation, as a supplement to mechanical air conditioning, is another particularly promising avenue of research.
SOMFY motorisations in windows (whether accessible or inaccessible) and control systems are the solution to a wide variety
of problems regarding ventilation, nocturnal cooling and air
conditioning. They have the effect of reducing energy
consumption as well as the overall size of the systems.
BETTER CONTROL
OF HEAT TRANSFER
THROUGH WINDOWS
The exterior wall is the principal point of heat transfer
between the inside and the outside of a building.
Regardless of the geographical location of the building, its
orientation, its type of exterior wall (double-skinned for
example), motor-driven and automatically controlled internal or external solar protection devices provide effective and
flexible control of this thermal exchange, either in conjunction with or without special windows.
SOMFY sensors control the automatic opening and closure of
external blinds, screens or internal Venetian blinds in a wide
range of positions according to changes in weather conditions
during the day, at night and with the changing seasons. Used
in conjunction with management software programmes, they
react with precision in order to limit consumption by heating
and/or air conditioning systems or even replacing them, as is
the case with some ‘green’ buildings in Holland, the USA and
Germany. In this way, for a total additional investment of 1 %,
an exterior wall equipped with automated screens can reduce
the cost of air conditioning by up to 50 %.
THE AESTHETICS
OF MOBILITY
The automated drive unit provides centralised and
personalised control at the same timee. External blinds
can play an important role in the aesthetics of an exterior
wall: a single control unit, for example, can perfectly align all
the blinds and place them in predefined and harmonious
positions. However, the exterior wall can become even more
animated if each individual window control unit is personalised. The benefits of this mobility are to be found inside the
building, where Radio Technology Somfy™ or infrared technology make it simpler to design or redesign office layouts,
now that the electric cables have disappeared.

SOMFY is a brand offering a virtually limitless range
of solutions. For fabric blinds, Venetian blinds,
awnings and roller blinds, either interior or
exterior, SOMFY motors and automatic control units
can be adapted to fit all types of solar protection
and tilting windows, regardless of the type of
climate, installation conditions or number of
protective devices required. They also enhance the
operating life of these protective devices, since a
motor-driven blind, protected from rough or
clumsy handling, lasts much longer than a
manually-operated version. As they take into
account the definitive requirements of users,
SOMFY solutions can be effectively applied to any
environmental strategy, from invitation to tender to
the final structure. The wide range of SOMFY motors
means that a satisfactory technical solution can be
found in virtually every case.
