Relay For Life - Canadian Cancer Society
CANCER IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH
IN QUEBEC
CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY
1938 - 2008
According to the latest statistics…
Reaching for new heights
• More than one person in three will develop cancer in their lifetime. Within the next few years, if the trend
continues, this statistic will be one person in two.
The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) is a national, community-based organization of volunteers whose mission
is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer. Since
1938 in Canada and 1947 in Quebec, our efforts have been aimed at creating a world where no one has to
fear cancer.
• Approximately one person in four will die from cancer.
• 42,100 Quebecers will be diagnosed with cancer in 2008. This means the lives
of four people an hour will be deeply affected by such bad news.
• 19,700 Quebecers will die of cancer in 2008. This means two people an hour will die from the disease.
• Lung cancer remains the most common cause of cancer death in both women and men, followed by
colorectal cancer.
• Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed form of the disease in women; however, the survival rate
is 87%.
• Prostate cancer is still the most frequently diagnosed form of the disease in men; however the survival
rate is 95%.
Progress
• 82% of children between 0 and 14 years of age diagnosed with cancer now survive. This percentage is
15.5% higher than 15 years ago.
• Since the 1950s, cancer mortality rates in children have dropped by more than 50%.
Our values:
Caring. Courage. Integrity. Progressive.
These are the values that drive our volunteers, employees, and donors in a joint effort to reach the same goal.
Our priorities:
1.
Support cancer research: the Society is the charitable organization that funds the most cancer research in
Quebec and Canada, primarily through the National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC), our scientific partner.
2.
Inform people living with cancer through our telephone service, Web site and publications.
3.
Support people living with cancer by offering them: telephone matching, lodging, help to quit smoking,
self-help groups, and material and financial assistance.
4.
Prevent the disease by educating and making the public aware of the importance of adopting healthy
lifestyles.
5.
Promote advocacy and the adoption of government policies favorable to our vision and priorities.
• With the exception of lung cancer, mortality rates have declined by 20% in women since 1978.
The CCS is present in 10 Canadian provinces; the Quebec Division consists of the following:
• Lung cancer mortality rates in men have continued to fall since the mid 1980s.
• A 13-volunteer member Board of Directors
• 14 regional offices across the province
• A team of about 160 people covering the regional offices and the Quebec Division office in Montreal
• Almost 20,000 volunteers working in their respective regions across Quebec.

TOGETHER, HIGHER!
THE PRESIDENT
I am very proud to present the 2007-2008 Annual Report,
which also marks the third year of my mandate. Since I was
appointed President of the Quebec Division, we have made
many changes and taken up numerous challenges. Each
step of the way, I have had the privilege of being part of the
mission to eradicate cancer. Some of our achievements:
• People living with cancer now have access to more and
better services.
• We communicate more effectively with the public, donors
and partners to strengthen their trust in us.
• Team spirit unites our volunteers, Board members, management and employees around the same goals.
The past three years as Division President have been characterized by change. In my first year, we revised our practices
and adopted operating principles based on transparency,
rigour and a commitment to continuously improve our
work methods. The second year, we focused on excellence.
With our new Executive Director, we developed a strategy
to ensure that volunteers and employees, the division office
and regional offices were all headed in the same direction.
Then, in 2007-2008, we began our ascent to the top:
• Revenues rose by 11.9%.
• The CCS historic event, the Daffodil Days, raised a new
record breaking amount.
Like many of you, I recently had to face cancer. My approach to fighting this
disease was the same as the one I used to complete my first climb at Mont
Gros-Bras in the Charlevoix area when I was in my twenties. These were the
only two times in my life that I felt this overwhelming panic that makes you
lose your bearings. The only way to avoid being overcome by vertigo is to
hang on for dear life to your equipment, to the members of the expedition
and to face the challenge with courage!
If mountain climbing and the fight against cancer have anything in common,
it’s the importance of teamwork and trust. At the Canadian Cancer Society,
everyone must rely on the head of the “climb party” but also on the person
immediately in front of them, who ensures a safe climb just like the person
to their immediate rear relies on him or her. The “climb party” of the Quebec
Division consists of an impressive number of volunteers and about 160 employees,
of partners and donors who have joined together in the climb to the same
peak: a world where no one has to fear cancer.

MESSAGE FROM
My time at the helm of the Quebec Division has been extremely rewarding. I have had the opportunity to
grow with people who willingly show strength, courage and determination in the daily fight against cancer.
I am proud to have reached this point in the road secure in the knowledge that a solid foundation has been laid.
I would like to thank the Board of Directors, whose involvement and decisions have contributed to change
by giving the Quebec Division of the CCS the authority and tools to increase its ability to act.
I would like to extend my profound gratitude to the Executive Director, Suzanne Dubois, for her determination
and leadership, as well as to the partners, donors, researchers and, last but not least, the CCS volunteers and
employees. The Quebec Division would not have been able to take this giant step without their commitment.
Three years ago I said that together we were stronger; today I realize that together we can move mountains!
• The Relay For Life mobilized over 28,000 people, for a 50%
increase in donations over 2006-2007.
With the backing of the Board of Directors, I focused on making the Canadian Cancer Society an effective, successful
organization, attuned to people and regional realities. I
wanted to put a human face on this evolution: the purpose
of each change was not only to better meet the needs of
people living with cancer but to also rally more donors,
partners and especially, volunteers around the fight against
cancer.

HEADING FOR THE TOP!
MESSAGE FROM THE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
It’s always exhilarating to report on a year of activities,
particularly when it is filled with so many achievements. The
results we are presenting show that we have made progress
on all the fronts in which the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS)
is active. Thanks to the efforts of the entire “climb party” –
volunteers, employees, partners and donors – the Quebec
Division is increasingly visible in the fight against cancer.
Our activities on all fronts were made possible by fundraising campaigns that
reached record levels in 2007-2008:
The Cancer Information Service (CIS) and CancerConnection/
Cancer J'écoute, which supports people living with cancer
and their families, received special attention in 2007-2008.
Our goal was to increase the number of interventions as
well as to improve their quality. Based on the feedback, it
looks like our changes were very well received indeed. We
could not have asked for a better reward!
But what’s the point of being proud of these financial achievements if they don’t
translate into bigger investments to help people? After all, they are just one
way of allowing us to better accomplish our mission. Thanks to these funds,
we can improve the quality of our services, expand the eligibility criteria, and
increase our presence in the community. Because of our ability to rally the
population, the CCS is the only cancer organization to serve all regions of
Quebec as well. The participants of the Division’s last conference, held under
the theme of support, rightfully pointed out the importance of regional offices as base camps, essential for
offering local services to the population.
The CCS is also linked to research, and in 2007, $8 million,
including $4.8 million from the Quebec Division, was invested
in 71 research projects in Quebec alone. Concretely, this
means the Society invests at least twice as much in cancer
research as any other charitable organization in Quebec. And
all these investments put us one step closer to eradicating
cancer.
The battle against cancer would not be complete without
prevention. We have made new progress in the fight against
smoking, namely, by partnering with the Direction de la
santé publique de Montréal with a view to, among other
things, ensuring that the clients of the quit smoking centres
receive the support they need. The j’Arrête helpline, which
celebrated its fifth anniversary in 2007, makes every effort
to help people quit smoking: telephone, chatting, and information booths in schools and in the workplace.
Cancer is the leading cause of death in Quebec. The fight
against this disease is, more than ever before, an issue that
concerns our entire society. That’s why the Canadian Cancer
Society is taking action on the advocacy front. We are also
asking each and every individual to adopt healthy lifestyles.
With over 1,000 participants, the États généraux de la lutte
contre le cancer held in September 2007 provided an opportunity for deep reflection with all our partners of the Coalition
Priorité Cancer au Québec and resulted in 68 proposals
aimed at organizing the fight against cancer in Quebec.

• $21.7 million for the year, an increase of 11.9% compared to 2006-2007
• Relay For Life raised $6.6 million, an increase of 50% over last year's edition
• $2.9 million raised by the Daffodil Ball, one of the most prestigious cancer
events in North America
As Executive Director of the Quebec Division for the past two years, I can compare my state of mind to that
of a mountain climber on an expedition. During my first year, I analyzed the terrain, measured the forces
at play and envisioned the obstacles to better avoid them. During my second year, we all tried an ascent
together, all better equipped and in good shape for the climb. Today, the peak is within view. We cannot
stop when we’re so close. One of the tools that will no doubt push us ahead is the 2008-2011 strategic plan
that we will begin to implement in the next year. Surrounded by a top-notch team, I can confidently say to
the public: you can count on us!
For the past two years, I’ve also been able to rely on the support and involvement of the Board of Directors.
I would especially like to thank the Board’s President, Louise Labrie, for her phenomenal work this year as
well as for her dedication and enthusiasm. Her unrelenting support will inspire us to pursue the 2008-2011
strategic plan as the Division continues to grow over the next year.
Brace yourself, new challenges and new peaks are on the horizon!

FINDING OUR WAY
INFORMATION
A cancer diagnosis can be difficult to understand and accept.
That's why having access to personalized, reliable information can be a great source of comfort.
The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) is the main source of
cancer information in Canada. Regardless of where you live,
we offer a one-stop confidential, free service, available in
several languages.
Cancer Information Service
The Cancer Information Service (CIS) is a front-line service
that aims to fulfill any request for information about cancer.
Comprised of information specialists trained in health sciences,
the CIS staff offers scientific information on all types of cancer.
They can also answer questions about prevention, screening,
treatments, side effects, clinical trials, complementary and
parallel therapies, and give much more information.
In 2007-2008, the Montreal staff answered 15,624 requests,
up 8.2% over the previous year. Of this total, 2,282 were
made by e-mail. Our information specialists have access to
a powerful tool, the Canadian Cancer Encyclopaedia, a
comprehensive database of cancer information developed
by the CCS and validated by oncology specialists. Part of
the Encyclopaedia is accessible to the public through the
Society's Web site. Our information specialists also have
many pamphlets and documents on cancer produced by the
Society as well as access to a regularly updated directory of
community services for referring people to resources in their
areas.

• 15,624 information inquiries answered, including 2,282 e-mail requests
• The number of requests handled increased for the fifth consecutive year, or nearly 33% more
than in 2003-2004
• 24% of inquiries were from cancer patients
• 24% were from friends or family
• 249,999 one-time visitors on the Quebec pages of the www.cancer.ca Web site, 6% more than
in 2006-2007
During 2007-2008, the CIS changed its operating hours to
coincide with those of CancerConnection/Cancer J'écoute,
the helpline for people living with cancer. Thanks to the
Quebec Division’s financial commitment, the CIS is now
available to the public from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday
to Friday.

WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH
SUPPORT
Cancer forces people and their families to make many changes
on a personal, relational, financial, professional and social
level. An important part of the Canadian Cancer Society's
work is the support and comfort we offer in various forms.
A wealth of experience to share
CancerConnection/Cancer J'écoute is a one-of-a-kind service
offered by the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) to people
living with cancer and their caregivers to meet their needs
in terms of emotional support and practical information.
CancerConnection/Cancer J'écoute advisors are social science
professionals who also receive intensive, continuous training
from the Society on emotional and psychosocial support
as well as on oncology. The service is enhanced by the participation of many volunteers who agree to be matched and
to share their own cancer experience with people facing a
similar situation.
In 2007-2008, CancerConnection/Cancer J'écoute answered
778 calls, of which 73% were made by people living with
cancer and 27% by caregivers. In all, 594 new telephone
matches were made; 86% of the calls were from women.
In terms of training, 2007-2008 was a very busy year for
CancerConnection/Cancer J'écoute, which developed eight
new training programs on emotional support and delivered
more than 33 sessions to 135 volunteers and 62 employees.
The CancerConnection/Cancer J'écoute team also reached
new heights in innovation with its “Cancer and family: how
to face it together” project, financed by the Steve Fonyo
Fund and aimed at improving support to families dealing with
a cancer diagnosis, particularly those with young children.
Worthy of mention is the fact that in 2007 the helpline team
became involved in the program offering support groups
in the regions. These groups take different forms, depending
on where they are located: informal meetings over coffee
or discussion groups made up only of people living with
cancer or including family members. The number of groups
will increase over time; as a local service, they meet the
needs of people living with cancer, which is a priority of
the Quebec Division of the CCS.
10
CancerConnection/Cancer J'écoute in 2007-2008
• 594 new matches, with an average of 14 telephone communications for each match
• 149 active volunteers as of January 31, 2008
• Composition of clientele: cancer patients, 73%; caregivers, 27%.
• A total of more than 1000 people were helped in 2007
Matching – a human relationship
“When it comes to matching, I get as much, if not more, than what I put in. I feel enriched by the profoundly
human and serious experience. Real sharing doesn’t mean taking on someone else’s pain but rather
providing them with a sounding board. It allows the caller to gain a new perspective: by talking freely, they
can reassemble their thoughts and start rebuilding themselves.”
Patrick Genest, CancerConnection/Cancer J'écoute volunteer
2007 Annual Conference
Under the theme of support, close to 300 people, volunteers and employees, participated in the 2007 conference
to discuss and learn about the issues as well as to improve the support offered to people living with cancer
and their caregivers. The participants agreed on the relevance of the Cancer 101 training, which they had
all received; they were also quite receptive to the executive team’s decision to set up support groups in
every region of Quebec. The conference also provided an opportunity to highlight the contribution of the
Society’s volunteers who year in, year out, act as ambassadors of the Canadian Cancer Society in the regions
and in their communities.
A few weeks after the event, a document was sent to the participants summarizing the survey results and
the main conclusions drawn from the plenary, which will help shape our initiatives in the coming years. The
conference was an excellent opportunity for the volunteers and employees to exchange views, allowing us,
to better respond to regional needs.
Armed with comments on the workshops and theme suggestions, the organizing committee has everything
it needs to organize a most promising 2008 Annual Conference.

BETTER EQUIPPED
MATERIAL
AND FINANCIAL
ASSISTANCE
A REFUGE
IN THE NIGHT
Material and financial assistance is a concrete example of
how the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) works to improve the
daily lives of people living with cancer. By donating the
material required for their treatment or by providing financial support, we help people with many of the expenses
associated with the disease.
Jacques-Cantin Lodge
Material assistance
Since it opened 17 years ago, close to 6,000 people have
made use of this haven offered by the Quebec Division of the
Canadian Cancer Society (CCS). In 2007, almost 700 people
benefited from this environment and the company of people
who, like themselves, are battling cancer. Besides lodging,
the Jacques-Cantin Lodge has a large cafeteria, several
lounges and common rooms, a game room with a home
theatre, a library and a music room.
In 2006, an analysis committee studied the material and
financial assistance needs and requests of people living with
cancer. Its work was most useful and drove the service to
unparalleled heights. As such, from 2005 to 2007, material
assistance climbed by 70%. In the two-year period, 776 people
living with cancer benefited, or 35% more than in 2005.
Provided primarily by the regional offices and available to
all, the material assistance takes the form of non-adhesive
dressings, adapted syringes, incontinence pads, breast prostheses, etc.
People living with cancer who must travel to Montreal for
treatment will find a warm welcome, a place to share their
feelings, and many other services at Jacques-Cantin Lodge
thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers and employees.
The wig replacement program
that began in 2006 is going well.
The regional offices have access
to a selection of elegant, varied
and natural-looking wigs, to the
immense satisfaction of patients.
In 2007, we improved this service
by adding accessories (special
shampoos, conditioners, brushes,
etc.) to help preserve the wigs.
Financial assistance
Continuing on the same upward
trend, financial assistance more
than doubled in 2007 over the
previous year. We helped 1,256
people by paying for the many
costs associated with the disease,
for example, travel, orthopaedic
stockings and mastectomy bras. This past year, we added
three types of reimbursable expenses: parking, disposable
underwear, and preventive treatment of lymphedema
(physiotherapy by prescription).

EXPLORING NEW HORIZONS
RESEARCH
Charting new paths and raising hopes to conquer cancer
give full meaning to scientific research and explain why the
Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) is the charitable organization that invests most in cancer research in Quebec and
in Canada.
In 2007-2008, the CCS gave $47 million to our scientific
partner, the National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC), of
which the Quebec Division's share was $4.8 million. In all,
$8 million was returned to Quebec in the form of grants
to Quebec researchers.
The knowledge gained through scientific research helps our understanding of the disease and consequently,
allows us to wage a better battle. It is encouraging to note that the survival rate is now up to 62%. However,
the battle has not yet been won and cancer remains a frightening word that represents more than 200 diseases.
We must continue to support research and invest for life.
•
Did you know that due to lack of funding, only 22% of research projects eligible for
grants could be financed?
The National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC) celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2007. Created in 1947 as part
of an agreement between the CCS and the federal Department of Health and Welfare, this scientific partner still
relies on the CCS for most of its funding. The NCIC grants funding to the most promising research projects.
In the 1940s, cancer was still relatively unknown, and methods of prevention and screening tools did not exist.
Treatments were limited to surgery and basic radiation therapy. Since the beginning of this partnership, the
CCS has given over $900 million dollars to cancer research. These invaluable funds have revolutionized our
understanding of the disease and helped us find new ways to explore the many facets of cancer.
Our star researchers
We therefore have every reason to be proud of the progress
made in this area and the international recognition that our
Canadian and Quebec researchers have gained. In 2007, they
distinguished themselves for, among other things:
Quebec researchers are recognized throughout the world for their expertise. In Quebec,
71 research projects funded by the Society
are currently underway. The main areas of
research funded by the CCS are:
• Fundamental cancer research
• Behavioural research
• The discovery of a stem cell ”niche” that could pave the
way to new treatments.
• Research on cancer causes
• The discovery of a tumour suppressor gene that could help
stop the growth of cancer cells.
• Breast cancer research
• The presentation to the world scientific community of
their research on new ways of treating different types of
cancers, including breast, prostate, lung and digestive tract.
• Clinical trials
• Prostate cancer research
• The discovery that a number of drugs currently in use for
other brain conditions may stop the growth of the stem
cells responsible for cancerous tumours in the brain.

15
THE SAFEST PATH
PREVENTION
While we can't control our genetic makeup or the effects of
aging, we can, however, avoid 50% of cancers by adopting
healthy lifestyles, supported by public health policies. As
such, and because prevention is everyone's business, the
Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) is working on various fronts:
• Educate and raise public awareness of the need to adopt
healthier lifestyles by, for example, conducting vast mobilization campaigns.
• Help smokers in their efforts to quit smoking.
• Actively promote early detection and existing screening
programs.
• Advocate for public health policies.
Tracking the causes of cancer:
annual Canadian statistics
The more you know about the terrain, the better prepared
you are to face it. To this end, the CCS publishes Canadian
cancer statistics each year that describe the situation and
indicate future trends. Their comprehensiveness and rigour
make Canadian cancer statistics an indispensable tool in
the effort to raise public and media awareness on the fight
against cancer and on the need to adopt healthy lifestyles.
For a breath of fresh air
Lung cancer is the leading cause of death in women and men. Tobacco is responsible for 85% of lung cancer
cases and 30% of all cancer cases. It is therefore not surprising that the Canadian Cancer Society is focusing on
putting an end to smoking.
The CCS teamed up with the Quit to Win! Challenge, from the day it was launched in 2000. Initiated by ACTIMENU, this annual campaign seeks to help smokers who want to kick the habit for at least six weeks. Over
the last eight years, more than 250,000 people have jumped on the bandwagon – 25,386 in 2007 – and many
have successfully met the challenge.
In 2006, the CCS also threw its support behind the Smoke-free Family (Famille sans fumée) program to
educate Quebec families about the negative effects of second-hand smoke and encouraging them to make
their homes smoke-free.
It is a well-known fact that mountain climbers are invigorated by the celestial air they breathe. To help individuals
get a taste of that wonderful sensation and remain smoke free after the six-week Quit to Win! Challenge,
the Society offers ongoing support through its free, bilingual and confidential telephone service, the j’Arrête
smokers’ helpline (1 866 JARRETE). Managed jointly by the CCS and the Conseil québécois sur le tabac et la
santé (CQTS), and financed by the ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux (MSSS), the j’Arrête helpline
celebrated its fifth anniversary in 2007, fielding over 100,000 calls to date.
Information and awareness booths on the j'Arrête helpline can be found in schools and workplaces. In Montreal,
j’Arrête specialists not only promote the service in Quit Smoking Centres but also follow up with their
participants. In 2007, Quebec clinics and hospitals referred 1,284 people to the j'Arrête smokers’ helpline.
Lung Cancer Statistics
• In Canada, the survival rate for lung cancer is just 15%, one of the lowest survival rates. In
comparison, 87% of women overcome breast cancer and 95% of men beat prostate cancer.
• In 2008, in Quebec, an estimated 3,400 women and 4,200 men will be diagnosed with lung
cancer, and 2,700 women and 3,600 men will die from this disease.
• Quebec accounts for 23% of the Canadian population but 32% of lung cancer cases.
• In Quebec, there are still 1.2 million smokers.
Getting back into shape
By participating in the Défi Santé 5/30 campaign initiated by Acti-Menu in 2005, the Society is doing its part,
urging Quebecers to eat a minimum of five servings of vegetables and fruits and to get no less than 30
minutes of exercise a day at least five days a week for six weeks. Research shows that 30% to 35% of cancer
cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle. In 2007, 110,829 people registered for the Défi and
67 CCS employees met the challenge.
16
17
LAYING THE
GROUNDWORK
ADVOCACY
Demographic growth and an aging population mean that
cancer cases will inevitably increase. Faced with such a
collective challenge, the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) is
calling on citizens to start lobbying the government to set
up a solid foundation for making the fight against cancer
its number ONE priority.
The États généraux for action
As a member of the Coalition Priorité Cancer au Québec,
the Quebec Division helped organize the biggest gathering
ever of people living with cancer, the États généraux de la
lutte contre le cancer, held in Montreal in September 2007.
Over 1,000 people took part in the discussions, including
nearly 300 volunteers and employees of the Canadian Cancer
Society.
The États généraux adopted concrete recommendations to
send to the ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux du
Québec to enhance and help implement the Programme
québécois de lutte contre le cancer developed by the government in fall 2007. This gathering led to 68 proposals that
highlight the urgent need to take action against cancer and
covering governance, prevention, screening, care, access to
drugs and community support.
In addition to its own initiatives to raise public awareness,
the Canadian Cancer Society joined forces with other organizations, groups and coalitions to give the fight against cancer
the attention it deserves and to make cancer a social issue:
• Conseil québécois sur le tabac et la santé
• Coalition québécoise pour le contrôle du tabac
• Réseau action santé

ACTIVITIES
Relay For Life
In eight years, the Relay For Life has become the Canadian
Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event. The revenues
generated by these night walks reached $6.6 million in 2007,
close to one third of the CCS total annual revenues. The
number of communities that host the Relay For Life continues
to grow, from 43 in 2006 to 49 in 2007. The number of participants is also increasing: in May and June 2007, 28,500 people
across Quebec walked laps all night long.
The night is made to CELEBRATE survivors, REMEMBER loved
ones who are fighting cancer or who have lost their battle,
and to FIGHT BACK by making a personal contribution and
taking action. These are now the three components of the
Relay For Life’s new brand image.
In a bid to continue moving ahead, Quebec’s coordinators
and development officers met in June 2007 to review the
first seven editions of the Relay. Their recommendations
will help further increase the event's visibility.
• Oncology self-help groups
• Various regional groups,
including cancer control committees
Screening: a social issue
For its first edition, the Amos Relay For Life obtained record results a first in Canada! - and received the Event of the year trophy at
the 2007 Annual Conference.
From left to right: Suzanne Dubois, Diane Raymond, Jacqueline
Kingsbury, Julie Cousineau and Louise Labrie.
We estimate that if 70% of Canadian women between
the ages of 50 and 69 had a mammogram every two
years, the number of breast cancer deaths could drop
by 25%.
The number of colorectal cancer deaths could be reduced
by 17% if 70% of Canadians between the ages of 50 and
74 had a fecal occult blood test every two years.

Daffodil Days
INVESTING IN OUR MISSION
Launched in 1961 in Quebec, the Daffodil Days are the historic event and symbol of the Canadian Cancer
Society (CCS). In early April 2007, 12,000 volunteers once again met the challenge in 2,600 points of sale,
setting a new record by raising almost $2.4 million with the sale of daffodils.
Each year, individual, institutional and corporate donations reach new highs and attest to the public's growing
commitment to the fight against cancer.
The Daffodil Ball
How do you raise the most funds possible in one evening? The
answer is by rallying the business community around a unique and
internationally recognized event, the Daffodil Ball. Once again, this
fundraising event that attracted society’s elite was highly effective.
Dedicated to Hollywood, the movie capital of the world, the evening
that was held in April 2007, managed to raise $2.9 million. It just
goes to show that glamour and philanthropy can go hand in hand.
In 14 years, the Daffodil Ball has become the single most important
fundraising night benefiting cancer in Canada.
Numerous forms of donations
To conquer new heights, you have to try different ideas. That’s why
the CCS added a new fundraising concept this year aimed at donors
willing to make a larger contribution: the leader donations and
major gifts. A recognition program highlights the vital contribution
these donors make to our mission. In November 2007, a first cocktail
allowed our generous benefactors to meet representatives from the
scientific field.
Planned giving is another way to contribute to the cause. Bequests and life insurance in favour of the Canadian
Cancer Society are not decisions that are made lightly. They represented $1.1 million in 2007-2008. This year,
the CCS launched a campaign to raise awareness among the public and donors about this type of contribution.
The Canadian Cancer Society proposes an original way to pay tribute to a loved one who has lost the fight
to cancer: by continuing the fight on behalf of this relative, friend or colleague through a donation to the CCS.
In 2007-2008 revenues from In Memoriam donations totalled over $1.8 million.
Revenues from annual fundraising campaigns rose sharply in 2007-2008: door-to-door canvassing, direct mail
solicitation, monthly giving, corporate gifts and contributions through employee payroll deductions raised
$3.1 million. Innovation was at the heart of this success. In 2007-2008, thanks to a new direct mail solicitation
program, revenues jumped by 72%. The conversion of many occasional donors into monthly givers – twice
as many as in 2006 – contributed to this increase. Lastly, the CCS first payroll deduction campaign was
extremely successful, as was the second campaign, conducted among provincial government employees and
retirees in conjunction with Healthpartners. This success confirms that fundraising campaigns in the workplace
are the way of the future.
Other events
Gourmet gatherings, Paws for Hope, Cops for Cancer and other activities are just some of the many ways to
help fight cancer. Organized all over Quebec, these special events raised close to $1.9 million.

FINANCIAL RESULTS
TOWARD NEW PEAKS
OUR FINANCIAL RESULTS
As part of its governance by policy, the Board of Directors of
the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) has created a Performance
Assurance Committee, which through its oversight role and
recommendations, helps the Division execute its mission.
Statement of revenue and expenses
for the year ended January 31, 2008
(in thousand of dollars)
Investing in our priorities
At $4.8 million, the contribution of the CCS to research has
reached unparalleled heights. Research remains the Quebec
Division’s number one priority.
Support to people living with cancer reached $3.5 million,
up 16.1%, while investments in prevention rose 15.2% to
$2.4 million. A total of $2.3 million were earmarked for
information, an increase of 5.3%.
Reaching new heights
The division posted record results of $21.7 million, or 11.9%
growth over 2006-2007, thanks to the magnificent efforts of
our volunteers and employees, and the generosity of our
donors and sponsors.
The Relay For Life continued its ascent to new heights with
a 50% increase to $6.6 million. This activity showcases
walkers and donors but especially survivors and their loved
ones. Also worthy of mention is the excellent performance
of the Daffodil Ball, which raised $2.9 million. The fundraising campaign continued moving forward, surging 26.3% to
$3.1 million.
The team…
The Committee is composed of five volunteers with diverse
skills. Over the next year, it will be busy with its new
mandate and emerging projects. I would like to thank its
volunteers for their energy, involvement and professionalism.
On behalf of the Committee and myself, I would also like to
thank our volunteers – the pillars of our mission – as well
as our employees, the unifying force behind our efforts.

REACHING FOR THE TOP
COMMUNICATIONS
AND MARKETING
Before setting out to conquer new heights, it is important to
be prepared and to be aware of the obstacles. As such, 2007
was a year of national strategic reflection for the Canadian
Cancer Society (CCS). In the competitive environment of
charitable organizations, the CCS would like to clearly position
itself as the benchmark organization in cancer control.
Our legitimacy is already well known. The release of the
2007 Canadian Cancer Statistics was widely reported in the
media. As soon as cancer makes the news, journalists contact
the CCS for an opinion, statistics or verification.
Throughout the year, our messages and events received
unprecedented media coverage. In the spring, daffodils decorated TV studios during Daffodil Days. In September 2007,
the CCS encouraged all Quebec women to become more
familiar with their breasts in order to be able to notice any
change. That same month, the Society, as a member of the
Coalition Priorité Cancer au Québec, capitalized on the
États généraux de la lutte contre le cancer to make its
positions known.
Team building
A must for mountain climbers whose lives are literally hanging
from the same rope, teamwork is how the CCS characterizes
its relationship with the media, which it views as partners.
To this end, in January 2008, the CCS met with media representatives during a luncheon to engage them in our cause
and to forge partnerships. Many undertook to give us space
or air time to promote our events and to deliver our messages. For example, billboard companies have installed
superboards in clear view in Quebec’s major cities, giving
the CCS unprecedented exposure.
THE CCS
ACROSS QUEBEC
In Quebec, more than one person in three will develop
cancer in his or her lifetime, meaning that potentially no
family will be spared. By focusing on its priorities, the
Quebec Division made a concerted effort in the past year
to complete, consolidate and equip its headquarters. To this
end, Service to the community officers have been hired to
better meet local needs.
HUMAN RESOURCES
Volunteering – the desire to achieve
In 2007, the CCS paid special attention to volunteers, hiring
a person who will work with the regional offices to implement volunteer recruitment, development and training
strategies. Almost 20,000 volunteers work across Quebec
in any one of the many areas where they can put their talent
and skills to work: fundraising events, promotional activities,
support to people living with cancer, and administrative
services in the regional offices, to name just a few.
Our volunteers make an invaluable contribution. They devote
their time and energy to fulfilling the CCS mission. Through
their knowledge, experience and ideas, they take concrete
action to create a world where no one will have to fear cancer.
To acknowledge the exceptional work of these volunteers
engaged in the fight against cancer, the Quebec Division
grants prizes under its Honours and Awards Program. In 2007,
the Society awarded the Jonquille Or, its highest distinction in
Quebec, to Denyse Mackey for her exceptional dedication as
a member of the Quebec Division Board of Directors and
within the Beauharnois section.
Mr. and Mrs. Nadeau of Lévis, have been together in the thick of the
action for more than 25 years. In recognition of their exemplary
dedication, the Society gave them a 25-year service pin at the 2007
Annual Conference.

25
The Quebec Division of the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) wishes to thank all of its donors – individuals, corporations, institutions and foundations – who contributed donations and sponsorships to the fight against cancer.
As the recognition program will be modified in 2008-2009, the CCS will unveil the names of its donors in a
publication other than the annual report.
A special thanks to our volunteers and employees across Quebec, involved in solicitation, fundraising and
information.

“My mother died of cancer several years ago and I know that she suffered terribly. At the time,
medicine could not provide appropriate relief to people living with cancer. Thanks to research funded
by the Canadian Cancer Society, the quality of life of people living with cancer has improved. For
me, it’s only natural that I would do my part to contribute to this great cause.”

"I donate to the Canadian Cancer Society because I have had a number of friends and relatives who
suffered from cancer. I am very fortunate that none of them has died of the disease. Unfortunately,
even some of those who have been cured have suffered long-term side effects from either the
surgery, the chemotherapy or the ongoing medications they have to take. I just want to do what
I can to make it possible to truly cure this disease."

“I agreed to co-chair the 2007 Daffodil Ball because I believe the
Canadian Cancer Society’s mission is relevant and important. In fact, at
a time when the population is increasing and aging, the incidence of
cancer will only rise. In this context, the Society’s efforts in terms of
research and services offered to people living with cancer take on their
full meaning.”
