Those requirements would also 1 1 discourage the establishment of new libraries in rural or 0 0 1 1 1 sparsely-populated areas. 1 0 1 1 1 0 1 In this projection, numbers 0 and 1 on the map show the Texas counties where residents wishing to visit an 1 1 1 1 1 1 0 accredited public library may have only one single-facility 1 1 0 library in the county, or none at all, if budgets fail to 1 1 0 0 increase significantly from FY 2012 levels and new 1 accreditation standards are approved as proposed. 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 Only 496 of the current 1 0 0 0 1 1 532 accredited public 1 libraries would be able to 1 1 1 1 meet the proposed new 1 1 0 1 1 requirements without significant 1 1 1 increases to their FY 2012 budgets. 1 1 The resulting loss would add 12 1 1 1 counties to the list of those with no accredited public libraries, and 6 1 counties to the list of those with only 1 1 one single-facility accredited public library. 1 129 counties (51% of the 254 counties in Texas) 1 1 are projected to have one or fewer single-facility accredited public libraries. 0 1 Total population in those counties is 2,002,650, 1 or 7.6% of the statewide population of 26,448,193. 0 24 counties (9.5% of the counties in Texas, and a population of 180,351) are projected to have no accredited public libraries at all. Much of the affected territory is in ‘Rural Remote’ areas where the nearest urbanized area is at least 25 miles away, making it a long drive to the next-nearest public library, with a hope that that library serves non-residents.
