I. Goal and Outcomes
o
o
o
The primary goal of French 210 is increased proficiency in French at the intermediate level in
speaking and writing. Emphasis is placed on the development of accuracy in speaking and writing
through a revision of grammatical structures with which you are already familiar and through the
introduction of new structures. Further, French 210 offers opportunities to develop your listening
comprehension proficiency.
You’ll also be able to make comparisons between your culture/s and French culture through analysis
of differences between your culture/s and French culture
You’ll also begin to acquire a general knowledge of French and Francophone nations, languages,
and cultures through discussions of different aspects of contemporary France.
II. Description
French 210 is a third/fourth semester course in French language and culture.
You will review the basic grammar acquired in first year French and learn some of the
complexities of French grammar as a preparation for more advanced study.
You will also be introduced to vocabulary that will prepare you to successfully handle a variety of
communicative tasks and social situations and a number of writing needs, such as writing letters
and short essay topics.
The thematic sections and selected cultural and literary readings will help you contextualize the
language structures you are learning and provide a basis on which to develop your cultural
knowledge.
French 210 is taught entirely in French, with occasional translation exercises when appropriate.
French 210 counts towards the GE Foundations Area C: Humanities requirement.
III. Workload
o

o
Participation is essential – many activities are in-class only. Grammar points are presented in class.
As a follow-up to the classroom, you are expected to learn and practice the material at home or in the
lab.
The “iLrn” online Cahier d’activités orales et écrites constitutes the primary source of your
“homework,” both written and oral. There will be occasional additional oral and written assignments,
including mini-compositions (“Situation écrite”) as well. You must complete 5 of the possible 10 : 1 or
2; 3 or 4; 5 or 6; 7 or 8; 9 or 10. Late homework will not be accepted.
Tests include short quizzes, 2 exams, and a two-hour comprehensive final exam.
Since one Homework, one Mini-comp, and one Quiz will be dropped, there are NO MAKE-UPS for
missed work. This generous drop policy exists because I recognize that emergencies, illnesses, and
travel are sometimes unavoidable. Please do not ask to make up assignments.

Slightly below average.

Incomplete Authorized: used only when the instructor concludes that a small, identifiable

but valid reasons. University Senate Policy allows one calendar year to remove an
Incomplete grade. A grade of "INC" may not be assigned to permit a student to avoid an
undesirable grade.
Incomplete Unauthorized: a student who is officially registered for the course but who has
never attended or who has stopped attending after satisfactorily completing a portion of
the course will receive a grade of "WU." A "WU" counts as an "F" for grade-point
averages, but may be removed by repeating the course. Students who are failing the
course and who stop attending will receive an "F."
Credit/No Credit: Subject to the requirements of their major and the conditions set forth in
the General Catalog, students may register for courses on a credit/no credit basis before
the deadline. Work equivalent to C or above will result in a grade of CR; work equivalent
