LIVING
Smart Phone Apps
They make life easier and enrich the adventure. Here are the Paris apps to download and for guests
before they head out the door.
TOOLS
RATP
The official app of the Paris metro system, with metro, bus and RER lines, including timetables and
regular updates. The paid version even gives you estimated arrival times for your next bus or train.
Velib’
This app lets you know where bikes are available and where you can park upon arrival.
Free French-English Dictionary
A very popular, easy-to-use dictionary with pronunciation guides and the conjugation of verbs.
XE
A great tool for shopping, so you’ll know how much a euro really is.
Converter by Trelleborg
This tool for converting the metric to the US system is great if you find yourself tempted by some
luxurious European linens.
Paris Food Markets
This really useful tool lists markets by neighborhood (or by day of the week) and gives you public
transportation tips with photos and even video.
Paris M&M
This app tells you which art exhibitions are happening where and when.
Patrimap
A free gift from the city of Paris, this interactive map points out the famous buildings in your area
and provides interesting guided walks.
GUIDES
Louvre Museum
A beautiful app put out by the Louvre, with in-depth descriptions of the art as well as maps and
useful tips.
Centre Pompidou
Another helpful museum app, but disappointingly more about the Centre and less about the art.
Grand Palais
The Grand Palais now has an app of its own, but it also sells apps for all of its exhibitions, with lots
of detail on the artwork and artists.
IDEAS
Le Fooding
A go-to restaurant app. It will tell you where to go based on where you’re standing, what you’d like
to eat or where you’re headed. Their recommendations are always excellent.
My Little Paris
A fun little app for original ideas of what’s hot and what’s in.
AlloCiné
Catch up on the movie scene, showing what’s available by movie or by location.
Highlights of Paris
Sweets, Shopping and Culture, which includes three walking tours.

Transportation-Public
The public transportation within Paris and suburbs is called the RATP (Regie Autonome des
Transports Parisiens). Below is an explanation of the various types of services that are offered.
You can purchase tickets for all at your local Metro stop or at a Tabac store with the RATP
sign.
RATP
Information is available in English, French, Italian, German, Dutch, and Spanish
www.ratp.fr .
Metro
Runs daily from 5:30 AM to 0:30 and to 2:00AM on Saturday nights.
Can be utilized within the Paris Metro Area.
RER
Runs from 5:30 AM to 0:30AM
Gives you access to more outreaching areas of Paris.
Bus
Runs from 6:30 AM to 8:30PM.
Some bus lines run 24 hours. Please check the bus maps at your local metro stop for
more information.
You can use one ticket and transfer to a different bus if the ticket is reused within the
hour.
Vélib’
Take a bike, return it where you like, Vélib’ is a self-service bike system available 24
hours a day, all year round. To access the service, buy a 1-day or a 7-day ticket online
or at any Vélib’ station or sign-up for a long-term subscription.
www.en.velib.paris.fr/How-it-works
Autolib’
Autolib’ is a rentable electric car also run by the City of Paris. You can rent them for
periods of time. Here is a link to how it works.

Transportation-Taxi/Smartphone Apps/Rental Cars
TAXI
There are three ways to utilize taxi’s now in Paris. The first is to go to a taxi stand or flag a
taxi from the street. The second, you can phone Taxis G7 or Taxi Bleus, and the third, (and
currently more popular) way to obtain a taxi, is by IPhone or Smartphone apps.
To order, you can call the English line listed below (G7). You can choose family cabs,
maxi cabs, English drivers, etc. You can also set up an account and from then on,
reserve a taxi by phone without having to speak to an operator.
01 41 27 66 99
08 91 70 10 10 (www.taxis-bleus.com in English)
SMARTPHONE APPS
You can search for them under your app store on your Smartphone. Once the app is
downloaded, it will walk you through how to obtain a taxi. You must provide your
credit card information to use these services. These services are quite popular
because the cabs are usually cleaner and they charge your card so no cash is really
necessary unless you would like to leave a tip.
The most popular Apps are:
UBER
LeCab
RENTAL CARS
The major rental car companies have offices in Paris. Check the
Internet for your favorite company for locations. Passports may
be needed for the contract.
Available on an hourly basis (gas and insurance included)

Transportation-US Drivers License//Low-Cost Airlines
FRENCH DRIVER’S LICENSE
From a US state that has a reciprocal agreement
1. Check to see if the state is reciprocal. www.ambafrance-us.org/spip.php?article376
(subject to change)
2. You are technically supposed to have been in possession of your US driver's license
for one year before coming to France. Do not try to trade your California driver's
license (non-reciprocating) for a Pennsylvania license (reciprocating) in the US one
week before coming to France and expect them to accept the Pennsylvanian one for
trade, for example.
3. You have ONE YEAR from the start of your work visa to obtain a reciprocal driver's
license. You must officially start the process 3 months before the end of that one year
term. After that, you are not allowed to obtain the license-- you must start fresh and
take the test like everyone else.
4. You will need to go to the Prefecture de Police (Porte de Clignancourt on Boulevard
Ney, 75018). You can call ahead for an appointment or just show up and they will
direct you to the correct location. This process could take hours. Avoid bringing
small children.
5. Once you have submitted everything required, they will give you a paper asking you
to return in about a month to pick up your license. To pick it up, you will need to go
to the same location. Don't be surprised if picking up the license takes more than an
hour.
If you are coming from a US state that has no reciprocal agreement
1. After one year from your work permit date, you must apply and take the French
license exam. This website (which is in French) will detail out what is required for a
French Drivers license. http://vosdroits.service-public.fr/particuliers/F1459.xhtml
2. You must attend a driver’s school and then take a written and driving test. The
process can take months. Here is an expat friendly driving school to get you started.

LOW-COST AIRLINES
Besides the major international airlines serving Charles de Gaulle (Roissy (CDG)) or Orly
(ORY), there are three low-cost airlines serving Europe. All have multiple language
web-sites.
1. www.easyjet.com
2. www.vueling.com

Check Writing Tips
• French checks must be written in
French
• On the left side of French checks is a
space to write some brief information
about the amount and type of check. It
will be located on the left side of the
check near the perforated edge.
• Try not to leave space at the beginning
or end of your check for fraud reasons.
Often, people will put ///// marks so
no additional numbers or words could
be added to the checks
• NEVER carry a booklet of checks with
you in your purse or aroud Paris if
possible. It is always best to fill the
check at home or carry one with you
for a specific purpose.

French supermarkets do not typically provide bags
free of charge. You can pay for the plastic bags they
have at the store, or we recommend bringing a more
heavy duty reusable bag for your shopping! Many
Parisian folks buy a “cart” which they use to carry their
heavy groceries back.

Last Thoughts & Tips
Arts & Culture, Passes & Tickets
• Most national museums are FREE for everyone on the first Sunday of the month,
depending on the time of year. Admission is always free for under 18 years old.
•Buy an annual membership at the Louvre, if you plan on visiting more than once.
•Buy an annual Sesame pass for cool exhibits at the Grand Palais (including the
annual Monumenta) and Luxembourg Museum. (www.grandpalais.fr/en/sesamepass-0)
•Theatre Chatelet has a wonderful children’s program, concerts and plays. Family
passes are a bargain. (www.chatelet-theatre.com/en/devenir-adherent/carteadherent-famille)
•For guests (or even yourselves), buy tickets ahead of time for the Eiffel Tower and
avoid the lines. (www.tour-eiffel.fr/en/preparing-your-visit/buying-yourtickets.html)
•For Roland Garros fans, tickets go on sale to the general public in February.
•And for Paris Saint Germain soccer matches (www.psg.fr)
Miscellaneous
•Amazon.fr can be your friend. Delivery times are shorter than ordering from the
UK (provided the items are in the warehouse).
•Make sure to empty the “extra” lint drawer at the bottom of your drier at least once
a month. (You already know to empty the water reservoir and lint tray….)
•Washing machines require an anti-calcium tablet to avoid build-up in the lines.
These can be purchased at your local grocery store.
•Check into getting a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to access web sites and video
streaming services that are restricted to the US.
•Don’t be afraid to talk to your local vendors to practice your French! And feel part
of your neighborhood.
•Most importantly, if you have questions, feel lonely or want to get together for a
coffee, reach out to someone. We’ve all been there! Enjoy your time
in the City of Light!
Saving 4 Euros or More
Restaurants are required by law to supply excellent
tasting Paris tap water upon request. Instead of buying
expensive bottled water or a soda, say “Carafe d’eau,
s’il vous plait” and pocket that money!
