A great French winemaking region
T
he light glistening on the river and its tributaries is a wonderful sight. The cellars carved into white
limestone, magical châteaux, magnificent gardens, hillsides covered in vines ; hundreds of sights
that still hold the memory of kings, queens, princes and artists like Rabelais, Ronsard, Balzac,
Leonardo da Vinci, and Joachim du Bellay… The Loire vineyards offer charm, grace and surprise
around every corner.
It is a region for good living, a valley of abundance, a source of flavourful wines and generous aromas,
and we would like to share all that with you.
Exceptional Loire Valley
To give you a feel for the area, the Loire Valley is
France’s third-leading region for AOC wines and is
on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. It spans from the
Atlantic to the depths of the Berry region, nestled
halfway between the North and the South, smoothness and freshness, arts and literature, tradition and
modernity. From these harmonious blends, encouraged by a temperate climate and a mosaic of terroirs, a rich diversity of wines were born.

A glass full of good living,

The history of the Loire and its wines follows the
history of France and its nobility.
Apart from the Nantes vines, which were planted by
the Romans, winemaking came to the Loire Valley in
the 5th century, and was developed over the next
thousand years by the crowned heads of France and
England. In seeking out quality worthy of royal palates, these winemakers would create highly renowned
wines. Vouvray was recognised as an Appellation
d’Origine Contrôlée in 1936 during the early days of
the INAO (France’s national institute for controlling
place names), and the wines of Nantes, Anjou,
Saumur and Tours soon followed.
The Loire Valley’s wines have always been appreciated throughout Europe and have won over some of
the most illustrious epicurean, including Rabelais,
Balzac and Curnonsky, not to mention today’s top
cuisine personalities.
These wines were also nourished by their exceptional
natural and cultural environment.

Since 2000, the Loire Valley has been on UNESCO’s
World Heritage List thanks to its lively cultural
landscape.
Its wonderful natural landscape follows the 280 km
long Royal Loire Valley, the result of two thousand
years of history of the local population and its river.
This monumental landscape, one of the world’s most
impressive, boasts royal châteaux (Chinon,
Chenonceau, Chambord, Amboise, and many more)
and rich vineyards.
All of the Loire’s appellations can be proud of the
region’s cultural and historical heritage.

The Loire Valley offers two sources of inestimable
wealth: its precious historical heritage and an array
of unique wines. This spectrum of colours (white,
rosé, red), textures (still, lightly sparkling) and
flavours (dry, “tender”, demi-sec, “soft”, semi-sweet,
sweet) makes Loire Valley wines perfect for a variety
of food pairings and for any special meal or
occasion.
There is a passion that draws me to the
Loire vineyards. First of all, the northern
terroirs are particularly demanding with
the vines. Since there is less sunlight, the
plant has to draw everything it needs to
develop from the soil. In Northern latitudes,
the terroir comes out even more in the
fruit. Also, the Loire has kept its distance
from international taste standards, a
wonderful idea! In the region, you’ll never
see any over-ripe or jammy wines, just
unrivalled aromatic freshness. These wines
emphasize the personality of their terroirs
and are truly pleasant to drink - one of
the Loire Valley’s fundamental values. In
the Loire vineyards, a wine’s texture and
richness, no matter what its colour and
style, should take nothing away from the
fruit’s taste, its maturity and freshness,
and its harmony and juiciness.

The Loire Region’s 69 appellations are sure to please
highly demanding connoisseurs and tickle the taste
buds of new wine lovers. The Loire is also home to
Loire Valley Vins de Pays, which come from the
region between the Atlantic Atlantic and the peaks
of Auvergne.

An invitation to discovery…
Tastes and colours for every
palate
The rosé wines have more than earned their reputation. Cool, quality wines, with just the right degree
of fruitiness prove original with delicate tenderness,
which is especially tasty in summer, when epicureans fall under the sun’s warming spell.
The local reds, whether ready to drink or for keeping,
should be tasted with just the right meal, either
young and chilled for the former or mature and at
room temperature for the latter.
The whites, available in an infinite variety of dry,
semi-sweet, or sweet wines, are perfect for any shared moment. They have earned a place in some of
France’s top restaurants.
The Sparkling wines, another hallmark of the Loire
winemaking region, are prepared according to traditional methods in Saumur and Tours cellars since

The Loire Valley’s winemakers did not want to give
into the trend for “blockbuster” wines, a wise decision that has won the respect of wine professionals
and consumers alike.
A single varietal. Another original aspect of Loire
wines is that most are made from a single varietal:
Melon de Bourgogne in the Nantes region, Chenin,
Cabernet and Gamay in Anjou, Saumur and Touraine,
Sauvignon and Pinot noir around Tours.
A subtle harmony born of the
terroir and the human "know how"
Loire Valley wine lovers immediately take note of the
unique tone behind the region’s broad range of
appellations. This diversity goes back to the vineyards’
variety of soils (shale, limestone and sand), reliefs
and exposures.
This array of varietals unrivaled the world over has
yielded a range of wines that are both unique and
diverse.
This wealth of wine invites demanding epicureans to
discover the region’s great terroirs and to taste how
natural factors have influenced the wines’ structure
and aroma.
Taste the harmony…
The mark of a river. The Loire and its many tributaries play a major role in tempering these wines by
encouraging several microclimates that favour winemaking and contribute to oenological diversity. Its
“buffer effect” is vital to making sweet and semisweet wines.
Heirs to the past. The Loire winemakers are faithful
to the practices of their ancestors, which they have
combined with new methods inspired by talented
technicians and winemakers. However, they introduced these innovations artfully and carefully over
time.

A trip on the Wine Route is one of the best ways to
savor and discover this great winemaking region.
If Colette was right in saying that

the Wine Route sings of the richness of its heritage
and the flavour of its terroir all along its course.
800 kilometres of exceptional heritage: famous
landscapes were shaped by the meandering Loire
and its tributaries, molded by human strength and
spirit, from the Atlantic to the hillsides of Anjou and
Saumur and the valleys of Tours.
The châteaux of Tours and the country mansions of
Anjou inspired scores of writers and philosophers
such as Rabelais, Balzac, Leonardo da Vinci,
Descartes, Ronsard and Victor Hugo.
Its troglodyte cellars were carved in limestone, forming vast underground quarries perfect for aging
and storing wine. Its extraordinary gardens are nourished by the region’s rich climate and soil to produce beautiful botanical harmonies.

along the vineyard paths, on a barge down the Loire,
or celebrating in a Bacchic festival, discover France’s

Discover: Vines, Wines and Walks
The winemaker who welcomes you will make sure
that your visit to the region is eye-opening and unforgettable. He will take the time to explain this rich
terroir that yields wines enjoyed the world over. By
pouring you a glass of concentrated landscape and
know how, the winemaker perpetuates a centuriesold French tradition.
A glass of authenticity…
The first weekend in September is a time for delightful
walks with the winemakers. It is a time for sharing their
love of their profession, their soil, and their know how
as they guide you through a UNESCO World Heritage
Site.
With gourmet breaks and literary events, grape tasting
and cellar visits… set out with other walkers and hikers
to get the taste and feel of these landscapes. Once you
arrive at your destination, share a picnic with fellow travellers, and taste the region’s best wines with the winemakers.
But you don’t have to wait until September to travel
down one of the seven vineyard trails lined with signs
explaining more about winemaking:

L
ocated where the Loire meets the Atlantic Atlantic in a cradle of wandering nature,
the Nantes vineyard enjoys the benefits of the open sea and offers an appealing array
of seasonal variations. This land boasts winemaking estates and a rich historical
heritage, a delight for the eyes and the palate.
Take a sip of Muscadet, whose only varietal, Melon de Bourgogne, can yield surprisingly
varied wines depending on the soil it is planted in. This varietal left its native Burgundy in
the early 17th century, travelling down the Loire to take root around Nantes. Since that day,
Nantes has featured the largest single-varietal white wine vineyard in Europe.
It is divided into four appellations, the world-renowned Muscadet and three regional
appellations: Sèvre et Maine, Coteaux de la Loire and Côtes de Grandlieu.

There are inspiring landscapes to be found on either bank of the Loire. Take the time
to discover the rolling countryside covered in vines as far as the eye can see, dotted
with châteaux, manors and windmills… Stop to taste Nantes’s other appellations,
Coteaux d’Ancenis, Fiefs Vendéens (red, rosé and white) and Gros Plant du Pays
Nantais, a dry white wine with a taste of the sea.

Vinification “on the lees” is a technique
that dates back to the turn of the last
century. In those days, Nantes
winemakers practiced the custom of
saving the harvest’s best barrel until
spring, for special family occasions.
This “wedding barrel” wine was aged
all winter on its lees, which gave it a
unique character.

T
his, more than anywhere else, is where the Loire, Europe’s last wild river, is most
beautiful. Here, its majestic, peaceful riverbed receives the waters of the Layon and
the Aubance, two rivers that gave their names to famous Anjou wines.
With their 29 Appellations d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC), the Anjou-Saumur vineyards offer the
Loire Valley’s most diverse spectrum of wines, in terms of both colour and flavour,
including sweet and dry whites, sweet and dry rosés, reds, and sparkling wines.
The Wine Route covers approximately 200 kilometers between Ingrandes-sur-Loire and
Montsoreau across an area with vines as far as the eye can see.
The region’s quintessential varietals are grown on hillsides and plains along the Loire and
its tributaries, where they are nurtured by local microclimates.

Between Saumur
and Chenonceaux
I
n Montsoreau, right near Saumur, you are free to choose between… North and South.
Let’s start with the North. This area is home to the Bourgueil and the St-Nicolas-deBourgueil appellations, between the “gravelly wines” from the banks of the Loire and the
“limestone wines” from the hillsides.
If you continue further south, you will be met with a magnificent landscape, the confluence of
the Vienne at Candes-Saint-Martin. This is where the Chinon vineyard begins, in Rabelais’s
home country. The Cabernet franc varietal, which is locally known as “breton", flourishes in
these limestone terroirs to yield full-bodied laying down wines, with light, fruity, aromatic
qualities in the gravelly terroirs. The area’s few rosé and white wines are worth a taste.
Continue your trip towards the Indre valley, country of windmills and manors, and its basketry
centre (Villaines-les-Rochers). The crowning jewel of this valley is the Château d’Azay-le-Rideau.

This vineyard bears the name Touraine-Azay-le-Rideau. After meeting winemakers
from Touraine Noble-Joué just outside Tours, you will catch a glimpse of the
Montlouis-sur-Loire and Vouvray appellations on the hillsides on either side of the
Loire. Taste these great Loire wines (from the chenin grape) in the wineries carved into
the stone. As you travel back along the route to the east, towards Amboise, between
peaceful valleys and plateaus, you can tickle your taste buds with Touraine Amboise.
Near here, you will feast your eyes on some of France’s greatest historical sites, the
royal château of Amboise, the Clos Lucé and, further south, on the outskirts of
Touraine, the famous Château de Chenonceau.

The loir valley
T
he Loir is a tranquil river that gently rolls from the edge of the Beauce region south
of Chartres to Angers. Its environment features typical Touraine characteristics:
limestone, slate and troglodyte dwellings.
The Loir valley vineyard is the northernmost of the Loire valley and offers a unique local
varietal, pineau d’Aunis, which is used to make red and rosé wines with highly
sophisticated, slightly peppery flavours. This region is best-known for its white wines
made from a single varietal, Chenin blanc, which is at its best in wines from Jasnières
and Coteaux du Loir.
To the west of Vendôme lies the Coteaux du Vendômois appellation. From Thoré-laRochette and Lavardin to Montoire-sur-le-Loir and Trôo, travel through these small towns
and villages and visit their troglodyte cellars.

secrets of these rare wines. Finally, you will happen upon the deep valley pastures and

A
fter Amboise, travel along the Cisse, which runs parallel to the Loire, and enter
into the Touraine-Mesland wine region. Visit the striking Château de Chaumont
and enjoy its famous “Festival des Jardins”. After the Château de Cheverny, which
gave its name to the prestigious appellation, and the Château de Chambord, the
largest of the Loire châteaux, you will leave the Loire valley and its slate-roofed
buildings for the Sologne wine region.
Here, vineyards intermingle with fruit orchards. The houses’ roofs are covered in
tile and the vineyards face the south.
Continue in this direction towards the winemaking plateau of Oisly. Here, the
Touraine appellation produces lovely aromatic wines made using gamay and
sauvignon grapes.

You will finally reach the Cher Valley and its winemaking villages: Noyers-sur-Cher,
Saint-Aignan, and Mareuil-sur-Cher whose spicy, fruity, easy-to-drink gamay has made
them famous. This area is also sometimes associated with côt or cabernet franc and
produces more full-bodied wines. Before continuing your journey down the Cher, stop
over in the town of Valençay, whose own cheese and wine will give your taste buds an
idea of the town’s talent.

valleys, towards Montrichard. Behold the proud castle keep that overlooks the Cher
before visiting the magnificent Château de Chenonceau.

Different types of containers:
something for everyone
Most of the time, winemakers bottle their own wine,
which guarantees an excellent level of quality and
sanitation.
Less and less wine is sold in plastic containers or
barrels, since these containers mean that consumers have to bottle the wine themselves. Bottling
your own wine does call for some skill and organisation, but it can be a good excuse for a fun afternoon
with friends.
Bag-in-Box® (BIB) containers have become very
popular because they are so simple: the wine is kept
in a vacuum-sealed aluminium bag, which is protected by a cardboard box. As the wine is emptied from
the container, the aluminium bag shrinks, keeping
the wine from coming into contact with air. Once a
BIB is opened, the wine can be kept for several
weeks, making it a convenient solution for daily wine
consumption.
You can decide which type of container best
suits your lifestyle.
Wine labels:

Wine labels decorate the front and back of the bottle and sometimes feature sophisticated, imaginative
designs. Labels provide the only way of identifying a
bottle’s contents. The information on these labels is
subject to very strict regulations, for the consumer’s
benefit.
Study these labels carefully and add them to
your collection.
Transporting wine:
practice good habits
Today, wine is very stable and can withstand most
transport. However, you should keep wine out of
extremely high or low temperatures, being especially careful not to leave it too long in your car. And
be patient. Once you get back home, you should let
your wine sit for a few days.

flavour.

A little lesson in wine tasting
Lesson no. 1: the colour
To start off, place your glass on the table to study
the wine’s colour:
• actual hue: the tint of white wines can range from
very pale yellow to golden, amber colours. Rosés
vary from grey to orangish pink. Red wine’s have
a broad spectrum, ranging from violet to ruby red
to orange.
• intensity: pale, solid or deep.
• brilliance: bright, clear or dull. Clarity: crystalline,
transparent, cloudy… with or without deposit.
Then, pick up your glass by its base and tilt it
gently towards the light to observe the nuances of
its colour. Swirl the wine around the glass gently to
observe its “legs” or “tears” that will give you an
idea of the wine’s consistency: is it thick and
concentrated or light and fluid?
“Colour is the face of wine. It tells you all about its
age and its character.”
Wine, according to Paul Claudel, involves
three relationships: the relationship with
the land from which it originates, the
relationship with how you feel when you
taste it, the relationship with others when
you discuss it… Hence wine tasting is a
lesson in awareness of others and freedom:
you learn to respect the opinions of others
and to defend your own point of view,
increasing the pleasure of tasting everyday.
”
Lesson no. 2: the nose
First, don’t forget that your sense of smell is essential to your sense of taste. Put your glass under
your nose. Inhale the aromas of the wine and breath
in, get a little air and start over again. You will sense
subtle, powerful, fresh and pleasant fragrances…
unless the cork has been unkind to the wine.
These aromas may remind you of a floral scent, a
fruity dessert, a freshly-baked cake, your grandfather’s tobacco pouch, a spicy exotic dish, a basketful of mushrooms or any number of smells that
bring back people, places or emotions.
Now it is time to taste the wine!
But remember, “The nose is an advanced fortress
that protects your mouth from unpleasant
surprises."

Slender or full-bodied, smooth or heady, heavy or
light, strong or slightly sparkling… Roll the wine
around on your tongue, move it around your mouth
and focus carefully to get the full experience of your
wine.
Once you have swallowed or spit out your wine,
keep tasting. Does the wine have a long finish,
meaning its flavours and aromas unfold slowly, or a
short finish, meaning they are fleeting?
Even if you don’t have much experience, the world
of wine is within your reach. You can describe the
spectrum of aromas you sense between your nose
and the back of your throat and tell whether the
tannins are soft, silky or supple and speak about
how much you like the wine.
