IMAS Module – Sequence 3 Academic year 2009-2010 MODULE : ENTERPRISE AND CORPORATE RESPONSABILITY Date and schedule : 1-5 March, 8.30-12.30 Salle Aubert , 20, Rue Rothschild, 1202 Genève Module coordinator : Benoît Vulliet Email : [email protected] 16 participants : 7 French speakers, 5 English speakers, 4 Spanish speakers. 1. AIM The notion of enterprise and corporate responsability covers a wide range of subjects. The aim of the module is not to cover all of these extensively, but rather to offer a few definitions and ideas to reflect upon. At the end of the module, participants will understand the notions of enterprise, enterpreneur and entrepreneurship, as well as corporate social responsability. They will be able to critique the various dimensions of the concept of corporate responsability and will be able to analyse specific cases. 2. CONTENT The economy depends on the production and exchange of goods and services offered by businesses within a globalised market. Most businesses have an economic aim and are characterised by the variety of (individual or collective) methods used in order to mobilise human, technical and financial capital. However, certain businesses are concerned about social and environmental aspects, and take into account the part they play in the occasionally disastrous effects caused by their activities. While the idea of corporate social responsability (CSR) is not a new one, this concept, which combines aspects of sustainable development and governance, is now used by many corporations, whether public, private or social. The concept of CSR sprung from pressure exerted by associations. This led international organisations to commit themselves to broadcasting and applying CSR, especially since the Global Compact in 2000, which mainly targeted large corporations. Furthermore, the number of certification agencies and support services has increased, offering businesses of all sizes (especially small and medium-sized businesses, which make up the majority of all enterprises) new opportunities for integration and innovation. By analysing enterprise, the module will reflect upon the role of the entrepreneur and businesses with regards to CSR.
