The 10th Biennale Internationale Design Saint
4 Press release 9 March 2016 The 10th Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne announces its title: Working Promesse, shifting work paradigms March, 9th 2017 - April 9th 2017 Scientific Director: Olivier Peyricot The Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne 2017 will present a state of the art and a great experiment, a giant laboratory, entitled Working Promesse focused on the shifting work paradigms. Work is one of the major preoccupations of our society. For us all, work provides both income and status, it promises emancipation and a future. At the heart of political and economic concerns, offshoot of the dream of a generalized full-employment, it is central to political and economic concerns, work, at the beginning of this 21st century, it undergoing an entire transformation. From digital labor to the sharing economy, the world of work is being reconfigured; it is inventing new organisations, new services but also new throes and new hopes. Designers, companies and the entire Saint-Etienne territory will gather in 2017 around this topic in order to confront different perspectives, ideologies, innovations and desires. And it is with the participation of the public that we will work towards this promise. Central to the issue of work mutations, the Biennial will investigate the three following themes: - Digital Labor. The confrontation of digital tools with various crises - environmental, economic and terrorist - that successively shake our social structures, is leading to multiple disruptions in our societies; Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne 2015 © C.Bruchet - Share utopie ? Work is an exceptional space for technical and organisational inventions that exploits an entire part of humanity, leading to suffering as well as hope. However, it also reveals nonstandard productive capacities that fascinate, deviate and absorb our imaginations. From the design of an interface meant for the management of a shared service to the active participation in citizen groups, designers take up ideological perspectives that are going to sustainably contribute to the elaboration of our environment. * Signature provisoire : le nom de la Région sera fixé par décret en Conseil d’État avant le 1er octobre 2016, après avis du Conseil Régional. The questions that are going to stir up the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Etienne 2017 will provide an opportunity to explore the experimental forms of work through its tools of production but also its fictional and futurist dimensions: will we still need to work? At what rhythms? Alone or collectively, in networks or in atomized ways? Will we be under surveillance? What value will we have? Will there be gender, race or aptitude segregations? What issues will technology resolve? Who will be in charge of it? What will we gain from it? How will we experience it? Design is also in a period of transition: from object to service, from urban dimension to social dimension, the scales on which design has a role to play are being multiplied. Working Promesse, shifting work paradigms will be an opportunity to use design to interrogate our future lifestyles. The 3rd generation Biennial will be revealed in 2017 A new impulse for the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne 2017 Since 1998, date of its first edition, the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne, reveals the current state of design and creativity worldwide and invites visitors to question themselves on the evolution of societies and on new ways of life. From 1998 to 2004, the Biennial was initiated and organised by the ESADSE. Run by the Cité du Design, under the direction of Elsa Francès, from 2006 to 2015, the biennial gathers under a unique topic several external curators. The 2017 edition stands out to launch the 3rd generation Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne, that distinguishes itself by three aspects: - A scientific direction producer of corpus of knowledge on the selected topic. A substantive work that aims at supporting the exchanges with the personalities invited to share their views at the biennial. - A Biennial that is more than just an exhibition. Beyond the display of a design point of view on the topic of work, it is an opportunity to experiment. An experience in which the visitors are encouraged to act (involved in a piece of creation), or producers. - An entire city that is mobilized. The 2017 edition is an opportunity to transform Saint-Étienne into an experimental territory for new uses. the Cité du Design wishes to work with all partners interested in testing and developing new experiences and appropriating the practices of tomorrow. To achieve this, the Cité du Design may propose tailored offers for companies, giving them the chance to participate in the experiment offered by the exhitions or to use the Saint-Etienne district as a «laboratory». * Signature provisoire : le nom de la Région sera fixé par décret en Conseil d’État avant le 1er octobre 2016, après avis du Conseil Régional.
