Un portrait aérien de notre planète pour un développement durable
par Yann Arthus-Bertrand
Yann Arthus-Bertrand nous convie à un voyage à travers les réalités du monde. Ses photographies
aériennes reflètent la variété des milieux naturels et des expressions de la vie, mais aussi l’empreinte
de l’homme et les atteintes à son environnement. Ce travail constitue un "état des lieux" de la planète
en ce début de millénaire.
L’ensemble indissociable des photographies et des textes invite chacun à réfléchir à l'évolution de la
planète et au devenir de ses habitants.
Photographe témoin, Yann Arthus-Bertrand a souhaité s’adresser au plus grand nombre, aux citoyens
de tous les pays. Cette exposition souligne que, plus que jamais, les niveaux et modes actuels de
consommation, de production et d’exploitation des ressources, ne sont pas viables à long terme. Elle
illustre une étape décisive, où l’alternative qu’offre le développement durable doit aider à provoquer
les changements qui permettront de "répondre aux besoins du présent sans compromettre la capacité
des générations futures de répondre aux leurs". Ces changements, cet engagement effectif dans la voie
du développement durable, ne dépendent pas seulement des volontés des gouvernements et des
puissants de ce monde. Chacun, individuellement, a un rôle à jouer pour l’avenir de la planète, chacun
a le pouvoir et le devoir d’agir et de se mobiliser, en masse, pour influencer les décideurs. Par cette
exposition, Yann Arthus-Bertrand nous offre les moyens de cette prise de conscience.
Fruit d’un patient travail d'enquête commencé en 1990, représentant 4000 heures de vol en hélicoptère
et une centaine de pays visités, ces photographies, choisies parmi des milliers de prises de vue,
doivent leur puissance d'émotion et d'évocation à l'œil de Yann Arthus-Bertrand et à son souci de
témoigner pour les générations futures. Cette exposition n'est pas une fin en soi mais une étape
importante dans un projet qui se poursuit chaque jour. Il reste des dizaines de pays à parcourir, et
grâce aux coordonnées géographiques de chaque prise de vue, d'autres photographes pourront
retrouver les mêmes sites et prolonger cette ambitieuse entreprise. Conscient de ses impacts sur la
planète, Yann Arthus-Bertrand a créé en 2005 l’association GoodPlanet. Son ambition est d’agir et de
faire agir en faveur du développement durable. Il a notamment mis en place « actioncarbone.org ».
Grâce à ce projet, chacun peut, comme Yann Arthus-Bertrand, s’efforcer de compenser les émissions
de gaz à effet de serre engendrées par ses activités, en aidant des projets en matière d’énergies
renouvelables, d’efficacité énergétique ou de reforestation. (www.actioncarbone.org)
La plupart des photographies de La Terre vue du Ciel ont été réalisées en hélicoptère entre 30 m et 3 000 m d’altitude.
Yann Arthus-Bertrand travaille toujours avec le matériel CANON. Pour La Terre vue du Ciel, il utilise des boîtiers
CANON EOS-1N et EOS-1V, équipés de focales Série L allant du 17 mm au 400 mm. Les vitesses se situent entre 1/250
et 1/1000. La majorité des prises de vue sont en format 24 x 36 mm sur film FUJICHROME Velvia 50 ASA et les tirages
sont réalisés sur du papier FUJICOLOR Crystal Archive type DP.
L’exposition La Terre vue du Ciel a été rendue possible grâce aux précieux appuis de (logos partenaires de l’exposition +
IGN). Le projet de La Terre vue du Ciel a été rendu possible grâce au patronage de (logos Unesco) et aux précieux appuis
de (logos FUJIFILM, AIR FRANCE, EUROCOPTER).
Aujourd’hui, La Terre vue du Ciel, parue aux Editions De La Martinière, a été traduit en 24 langues.

An aerial portrait of our planet towards a sustainable development
by Yann Arthus-Bertrand
Yann Arthus-Bertrand invites us to take a journey with him through the realities of the world. His
aerial photographs reflect the variety of natural habitats and expressions of life, and also man's imprint
and assault on his environment. This work constitutes a "state of the planet " at the beginning of a new
millennium.
The photographs are indissociable from the text. Together, they invite all of us to think about the
changes of the planet and the future of its inhabitants.
As a witness photographer, Yann Arthus-Bertrand wishes to address as many citizens of all countries
as possible. His work underlines the fact that, more than ever, our present levels and modes of
consumption, production and exploitation of resources are not viable over the long term. It illustrates
a decisive stage where the alternatives offered by sustainable development must help to bring about
changes that will make it possible to “answer the needs of the present without compromising the
capacity of future generations to answer theirs.” These changes, this efficient undertaking of a
commitment to sustainable development, do not only depend on the wills of governments and those in
power around the world. Each one of us, individually, has a role to play in the future of the planet;
everyone has the power to act and the duty to rally, massively, in order to influence the decisionmakers. With these images, Yann Arthus-Bertrand offers us the way to such awareness.
Fruit of a patient research work begun in 1990, these photographs, chosen from thousands of shots,
owe their emotional and evocative power to Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s eye and to his desire to be a
witness for generations to come. This work is not an end in itself but an important stage in an ongoing
project. Many countries still remain to be visited. The geographical coordinates of every shot will
allow other photographers to locate the same sites and continue this ambitious undertaking. Aware of
the impact of his activities on the Planet, Yann Arthus-Bertrand created in 2005 the GoodPlanet
organization. His ambition is to act and encourage others to act in favour of sustainable development.
This is the purpose of the “ Actioncarbone.org “ project. Thanks to Actioncarbone.org, like Yann
Arthus-Bertrand, each one can offset the greenhouse emissions caused by his activities by funding
renewable energy, energy efficiency reafforestation projects. (www.actioncarbone.org)
Most of the photographs in "Earth from Above" were shot from a helicopter within an altitude between 30 and 3000
meters. Approximately 4000 hours were flown and over 100 countries were visited. Yann Arthus-Bertrand has always
worked with CANON equipment. For "Earth from Above," he used CANON EOS-1N and EOS-1V equipped with an L
series focal zoom and 17mm to 400mm range. The speed is between 1/250 and 1/1000. Most of the shots are at a
24x36mm format on FUJICHROME film, Velvia 50 ASA. The prints are made on FUJICOLOR Crystal Archive type DP
paper.
