SÉRIE 357C: JAMES CARVILLE
James Carville est un commentateur
libéral
reconnu,
un
personnage
médiatique qui paraît régulièrement à
CNN, et l’ancien consultant stratégique
de la campagne électorale de Bill Clinton.
Il s’est adressé aux membres du 357c
lors de la dernière soirée de la seconde
Série357c annuelle, en novembre
dernier. Les élections américaines à
moyen
terme
étaient
cédulées
prochainement, et il était anticipé que le
Parti démocrate allait perdre sa majorité
dans le Congrès américain et peut-être
même dans le Sénat (NB: Bien qu’ils
aient réussi à conserver leur majorité au
Sénat, les démocrates sont maintenant
dominés par le Parti républicain au sein
du Congrès, qui détient 242 sièges, alors
que le Parti démocrate en détient 193).
En dépit des problèmes auxquels fait
face le Parti démocrate, Carville soutient
qu’il y a encore des chances que les
démocrates
remportent
l’élection
présidentielle en 2012 : “Ils ont gagné le
vote populaire dans 4 des 5 dernières
élections présidentielles américaines. Les
républicains se concentrent sur les
électeurs blancs d’un certain âge. Ils ont
beaucoup de succès avec les électeurs
blancs qui sont plus âgés. Cela ne me
paraît pas tout à fait sage dans un pays
qui devient de moins en moins blanc…”.
James Carville trouve qu’il n’y a presque
aucune différence entre le Tea Party et le
Parti républicain, et a même invité les
membres du Tea Party de Louisiane à
venir parler à ses élèves de l’université de
Tulane, mais admet qu’il les a interrompu
après trois minutes : “vous dites que vous
êtes concernés par la dette et le manque
de responsabilité fiscale, et nous
commençons une guerre, nous coupons
les taxes, nous augmentons les dépenses
gouvernementales…et personne de dit
rien. Suite à quoi un démocrate devient
président et, on s’entend, un noir – et
tout d’un coup, ça explose! Je ne pense
pas que (ces critiques) soient autant une
question de race que le fait qu’Obama
soit démocrate”.
Carville a défendu la réaction du
président Obama face à la crise financière
récente, en rappelant que les Etats-Unis
ont une longue tradition de prêts
financiers pour dépanner les sociétés (tel
que le système de fret des chemins de
fers, et Lockheed).
A son avis, le plus gros changement sur
le terrain politique américain est le
suivant :
“Auparavant, la politique américaine
traitait de ce que l’on pouvait accomplir
– nous étions un pays en mouvement.
Ces jours-ci, la politique américaine traite
de limites. Nous n’explorons plus de
nouvelles perspectives, ou de nouvelles
possibilités.”
C’est sur cette note que James Carville a
donc mis fin à la Série357c pour 2010.

SERIE 357C: JAMES CARVILLE
James Carville is a prominent liberal
pundit, a CNN media personality, and
the former lead strategist of Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign. He spoke
on the last evening of the 2nd Annual
Série 357c, in November 2010, just
before the U.S. midterm elections. The
Democratic party was bracing itself for
- at worst, a dramatic reversal of fortune, or - at best, an important shift in
the balance of power within the U.S.
government. (NB: The Senate remained in Democratic hands, but the Republican Party eliminated the Democratic majority in Congress, with a total
of 242 seats to the Democrat’s 193
seats).
Carville suggested that there is still
hope for the Democratic Party to win
the 2012 U.S. presidential elections,
“…Democrats have actually won the
popular vote in 4 out of the last 5 presidential elections in the U.S.”. He added: “The Republicans are doubling
down on older white voters. They do
very well with older white voters. It
strikes me as not exactly (wise) in a
country that is becoming less white...”.
He spoke about the growing power of
the Tea Party, which he feels is almost
identical to the Republican Party. He
once invited members of Louisiana’s
Tea Party to speak to his class at Tulane University, but cut them off after
three minutes: “you’re telling me
you’re really worried about debt and
fiscal responsibility, and we go to war
and we have tax cuts and we increase
discretionary domestic spending and then
they pass the only unfunded entitlement
in the U.S.: Medicare, part D – and nobody says anything. And then a Democrat
gets in and let me be a little more blunt
here: a black guy – and all of a sudden,
holy moly! I don’t think it’s so much racial…I think it’s more that Obama is a
Democrat than that he’s black”.
Carville defended President Obama’s response to the financial crisis, reminding the
audience that bailouts have a long history
in American politics (American freight rail
system bailout of ‘79 and Lockheed), “it’s
not unreasonable that a government comes in and tries to get some demand
going”.
The single biggest change he’s seen since
in past years, is that “American politics
used to be about what we could do about our accomplishments – we were a
country on the go. Now a politics is about
limits. Everything about it is we don’t explore new vistas, new possibilities.”
With these words James Carville brought
to a close the Série357c for 2010.
