L’ÉCOLE SPÉCIALE D’ARCHITECTURE
introduction
Unique private school of architecture in France, Ecole Speciale d’Architecture was
founded 140 years ago in 1865 in reaction to academism.
Special ?
Standing out of the recent european wave of uniformisation of the architecture
background, the school keep on being special in its way to imagine how to be
architect nowadays and be trained in that purpose.
For École Spéciale being an architect today means :
Dealing with a wide scale of knowledge, and being able to manage a project but
moreover :
Grasping complex projects and situations
Being endowed with analyse sense, conceptualisation and be able to take a stand on
important issues
Integrating and managing interdisciplinary and international team
Being able to inovate and contribute to technical progress
Being global but aware of the culture diversity
Being special is:
Embracing diversity in all the acceptance meaningful to an architect
Being involved in the research field
Contributing to raise new interactions between reflection, esthetism, industrial
process and organisational stakes.
At Ecole Speciale d’Architecture, interdisciplinary and diversity, experimentation and
invention are meant for training free, aware and responsible architects.

University halls of residence
The students of the École Spéciale d’Architecture are not given priority to access to
university halls of residence. Or rather, the number of these halls of residence is not
equal to the number of students in Paris. The reason is that Architecture Schools are
under the Ministry for Culture and not the Ministry of Education.

Nevertheless it is always possible to contact them to check if there’s any possibility
of accomodation at the period of your arrival.

Documents required if you want to rent a place
Lease :
This agreement made between the tenant and the owner should list
rules and terms of your stay : the length of the lease, the starting
point, the price of the rent and the service charges ... Read the lease
carefully before signing it, even if you have to do with a professional
(estate agent, managing agent ...) who presents a standard contract.
Inventory of fixtures
This document permits to describe the rented dwelling and the
fixtures (sanitary fittings, equipped kitchen....) when the tenant
enters the dwelling and when he leaves it. Comparing the two
states, the owner can, if this is the case, ask for repairing of the
deteriorated elements. In the absence of this document, the
tenant is presumed to have received the dwelling in good condition
and will be considered responsible for all the repairs, even if the
deterioration had taken place before his/her arrival.
Inventory of furniture
This document lists and describes the state of all the furniture put at
the disposal of the person renting a fully furnished accommodation.
To be valid this inventory should be written and signed by the two
parties involved. It permits the owner to prove that the concerned
furniture is his/her property and to obtain repair if certain pieces of
furniture are damaged when the tenant leaves the accommodation. In
return, it offers the tenant the possibility to require that all furniture
and fittings function.
The owner usually asks for a deposit. This deposit can’t be more
than 1 month rent. This deposit is refundable after the flat has been
vacated and checked.
It sometimes happens that a guarantee of a third party is required,
a person who guarantee the payment of the rent in case the tenant
is not in a position to do it. In case you are financially supported by
your parents you can show a letter indicating the amount you are
givens each month. The owner can ask for a specific letter from your
parents in which they commit themselves to paying the rent in case
13
14
ESA - Exchange student handbook 2010/2011
you fail to do so.
The rent is paid in advance that is to say on 1st of the month, and quite often a minimum
commitment of sixth months of stay.
If you obtain your accommodation through an estate agent’s office, they will ask for a
commission which can correspond to the amount of one month’s rent.
As soon as you have signed the accommodation contract, you should take an
insurance policy covering the damages you may cause to the dwelling.
HOUSING BENEFIT
You can have housing benefit by applying to the family allowance office.

made)
