Here we take a look back to when work began on this new centre of excellence last September in the company of Managing Director of SCT Europe and Asia Gaëlle Frère and President of the Sensient Color group Mike Geraghty. $ WZRSDUWH[SDQVLRQ Gathered at the heart of what would become the future Sensient Cosmetic Technologies (SCT) research and production centre, representatives of the supplier joined local councillors to share a major new milestone in the history of the company, which has been based in Saint-Ouen l'Aumône since 1990 (Cf. Expression Cosmétique N°2, page 152), as work N°30 - Novembre / Décembre 20144,.!//%+*Cosmétique began on the extension of the French production site and R&D centre, which is now the largest of the four centres belonging to the cosmetics division (Cf. ‘In figures’ column). The new building (Photo 1), which will be officially opened in June 2015, will house the R&D centre covering an increased surface area of 1,900m2 (+63%) and over 50 employees (both office-based workers and scientists). It will also incorporate a series of laboratories devoted to research, on the one hand, and client training and support, on the other. This initial phase will be followed by a second devoted to the expansion of the current factory and its production capacity (+120%), with the new setup expected to be opertional by 2018. “The aim is also to look at new manufacturing processes and technologies, of course,” reveals Gaëlle Frère. Having achieved consistent levels of growth over the past 15 years (+520%), it seemed only logical for the SCT division to invest in the very source of this innovation, this being the French centre of excellence. “We really want to take full advantage of this site, which has proven a strategic tool in our line of business. Indeed, France is still the cradle of the cosmetics industry and the Saint-Ouen l'Aumône site is ideally located, close to both our existing and potential clients,” explains Mike Geraghty. This is, of course, also true of brands such as Sisley, which is based in the same town, and Clarins, based in Pontoise. As Gaëlle Frère adds, “the site also plays a special role within Cosmetic Valley”. The continuous growth of the company has, of course, resulted in the regular expansion of its workforce, increasing “from 105 employees in 2005 to 140 in 2014,” as Gaëlle Frère points out. OREDOLQQRYDWLRQ * OLVWHQLQJWRZKDWFRQVXPHUV KDYHWRVD\ This investment also reflects the strategy adopted by the cosmetics division of the Sensient group: “80% of our cosmetic ingredients, sold across our various markets, are produced by our French centre of excellence”, explains Gaëlle Frère. “This being the case, whilst these products are still developed at international level, we do offer a range of grades designed to meet local needs (different surface treatments, The global information on cosmetics & fragrancesNovember / December 2014 - N°30 106 En chiffres In figures Sensient Technologies 1.47 Mrds $ CA 2013 (+1 % vs. 2012). 2013 turnover (+1% vs. 2012). 37 pays /countries. 71 sites. ) ». Chaque année, le fournisseur lance deux à cinq nouveautés accompagnées d e d é c l i n a i s o n s ré g i o n a l e s . The supplier introduces between two and five new products every year, accompanied by regional versions. SCT has also adopted a cross-functional approach to innovation, as Mike Geraghty explains: “we draw inspiration for the cosmetics division from developments that have taken place at other units within the group (such as the food division, for example)”. Indeed, as Gaëlle Frère adds, “it is essential to listen to consumers and their needs N°30 - Novembre / Décembre 20144,.!//%+*Cosmétique when it comes to the innovation process”. This was, of course, the case with the desire for longlasting effects (in the make-up sector), the trend for all things natural (such as work on surface treatments), the anti-ageing concept in the skincare sector and even the desire to maintain the colour of the hair without damaging it - all of which are established trends that continue to find themselves at the heart of Sensient’s research activities. The fragrancing of beauty products is another field in which the company is currently conducting research*, a goal that has already resulted in the recruitment, last June, of three people responsible for strengthening the division’s knowledge and expertise. “I am ver y eager to see the new products that will be developed in this new building in the future,” concludes Mike Geraghty. In the mean time, the new centre of excellence is set to officially open in June 2015.
