After nightfall, streets such as Brick Lane or Broadway Market present a curious succession of imposing and colorful letters painted on
the metallic blinds of some of the shops. This typographic series, well
known to the city’s night-owls, is the work of graffiti artist Eine. Once
a companion in arms of Banksy, he has been part of the English graffiti scene for almost 25 years. Spurred on by a combination of age and
legal complications, he sought a way to continue to practice his art in a
more lawful way. It was in this spirit that he approached shop owners,
offering to decorate their blinds with the first letter of their shop-signs.
Since its illegal beginnings about four years ago, this formula rapidly
caught on, and there are now almost forty of these characters in his
multicolored font in the Shoreditch area. Eine’s alphabetical invasion
has spread to other cities and there are now more than 80 pieces in total, dotted around London, Stockholm, Brussels and Paris. These shutters have created a genuine craze, and aficionados set out to search for
these scattered letters, aiming to photograph the entire alphabet. | JV

Une fois la nuit tombée, les rues de Brick Lane ou de Broadway Market présentent une curieuse succession de lettres imposantes et colorées
peintes sur les stores métalliques de certains magasins. Cette série typographique, bien connue des noctambules de la ville, est l’œuvre du graffiti artist Eine. Cet ancien compagnon d’armes de Banksy officie dans le
milieu du graffiti anglais depuis près de 25 ans. L’âge et les complications
judiciaires aidant, il chercha une façon de continuer à faire son art de
manière plus licite. C’est dans cet esprit qu’il a proposé aux propriétaires
de magasins d’ornementer leurs stores avec la première lettre figurant
sur l’enseigne de leur commerce. Entamée il y a environ quatre ans illégalement, cette formule a rapidement convaincu et on compte désormais près d’une quarantaine de caractères de sa fonte multicolore dans
les alentours de Shoreditch. Eine a étendu son invasion alphabétique à
d’autres villes et il existe au total plus de 80 pièces disséminées entre Londres, Stockholm, Bruxelles ou Paris. Ces shutters ont généré un véritable
engouement auprès d’aficionados qui partent à la recherche de ces lettres
éparses afin de photographier l’alphabet dans son intégralité. | JV
