Sharing our vision
of a desirable future
GN
olgemma was
established in 1997
as a result of the
merger of two pioneers of
aromatherapy, Rhizotome
(1982) and Echinops (1991),
and over the years has
acquired benchmark status
in essential oils, hydrosols,
vegetable oils and spices.
Anxious to put our experience
and expertise to work in
an ethical and responsible
approach, we now offer a
range of over 300 products
where quality is key.
To provide you with high quality aromatic materials that ensure the wellbeing
of the planet and its inhabitants, we have been committed to the EEC organic
certification regulation since our beginnings and strive to involve our partners in
environmentally friendly practices.
The desire to go beyond a commitment to organic farming quickly led us to
become involved in fair trade. In 2004 we joined the Bio Equitable association and in
2010 obtained the ESR label (Fairness, Solidarity Responsibility) granted by Ecocert
for part of our range. Today we offer more than twenty ESR-certified essential oils
and spices.
In 2013 and 2014, we achieved the “Excellence***” rating as a “Responsible” company,
for our performance within the sector and the processes introduced.
Among our numerous supply chains, we have for many years enjoyed a special
relationship with Madagascar, a land of exceptional growing and aromatic resources.
We have now set up an office there to be closer to this remarkable source.
As part of our commitment to fair trade, we are working with our Malagasy
partners to improve the living conditions of farmers, access to training and
education as well as social and environmental development.
While we have been conducting these ethical initiatives within our supply chains
worldwide for many years, we are also anxious to apply them in our own region
of Languedoc Roussillon in southern France, and are working to maintain the rural
fabric and promote organic farming and social progress.
To make our actions more pertinent and effective, we have structured and organised
our commitment according to the principles of Corporate Social Responsibility
(CSR, ISO 26000). We have voluntarily incorporated our social, environmental and
economic role into our sustainability strategy. This allows us to analyse our
approach in order to define guidelines and action plans for the long term.
Through this approach we are committed to sharing our values, including the
concerns of stakeholders in our development decisions and acting transparently.
Our work, at the crossover point between agriculture and industry, puts us in a
unique position to drive a process of change along these lines.
The constant attention to product selection and all of our actions has the effect
of creating a culture of excellence that benefits our customers and our producers,
raising the quality standard across the board.
It is up to each of us to become aware of our responsibilities and take a position
that encourages trust and solidarity. This, in our view, is how we can build a better
world for the future.
For ethically and environmentally responsible, quality supplies, you can
rely on Golgemma. We strive to provide you with superior quality, ethical
products and absolute traceability.

*1 Unless otherwise indicated.
Golgemma offers a wide range of carefully selected aromatic raw materials to meet
your quality requirements, whether you are part of the food, pharmaceutical,
cosmetics or aromatherapy sectors.
The wide variety of packaging solutions available, from 10ml vials to 200kg
drums, enables us to meet all your requirements.
*2 The chemotype indicates the majority
biochemical component of an essential oil
and is defined by chromatographic analysis.
Our oils are guaranteed 100% pure and natural, non-terpeneless, non-rectified*1
and undiluted. They are botanically defined and chemotyped*2 when necessary.
It is necessary to specify the chemotype when
the essential oil of a plant may have a different
chemical composition (e.g. Thymus vulgaris may
Each batch has been rigorously selected for its organoleptic and physicochemical properties.
contain linalool, thymol, etc.).
Through our ongoing dialogue with our producers, we are fully aware of the
manufacturing process for each batch that we sell.
The composition of an essential oil varies depending on where the plant is produced.
For this reason, for each raw material, we state which part of the plant has been used
and where it was produced.
To ensure the traceability of our raw materials and because quality relies on
continuous management and monitoring of the manufacturing process, we have
implemented a quality management system.
Our activities are structured and comply with pharmaceutical manufacturing
best practice. We are GMP certified by the French drug safety agency (ANSM)
for our Essential Oils business.
For each product, Golgemma undertakes to provide all the regulatory and
technical documentation necessary for proper use of the materials
(certificates of analysis, data sheets, MSDS, allergens, IFRA, etc.).
Our quality department monitors the implementation of the
regulations and ensures that all the documentation available
online on our website www.golgemma.com is regularly
updated.

FOCUS
on the
ESR GUIDELINES
(Fairness, Solidarity, Responsibility)
We encourage the various stakeholders
in the sector to get involved in the
ESR initiative. The ESR guidelines,
established by Ecocert, combine the
requirements of organic farming, fair
trade, solidarity trade and CSR. They
incorporate the ‘organic fair trade’
and ‘organic solidarity’ specifications
originally established by the Bio
Partenaire association and provide
guarantees for projects and their
implementation.
They provide a complete system for
evaluating actions and raising
the awareness of industry players, as
well as setting the standards required.
To be involved in the ESR process, each operator in the chain has to be inspected in
the following four areas:
The ESR guidelines are based
on 7 principles:
1. Governance: formal commitments
made by management.
2. Respect for human rights:
minimum respect for ILO (International
Labour Organization) guidelines.
3. Labour relations and working
conditions: benefits; freedom of
association and recognition of the right
to collective bargaining.
4. Environment: selecting organic
products; managing resources and waste.
5. Good business practice and
partnerships: fair contracts and prices;
development support.
6. Consumers: regulatory compliance;
informing people and raising awareness
of fair trade.
7. Social engagement and
development: initiatives and support
for local development; technical
support for farmers.
CSR (ISO 26000) offers a management model based on the various aspects of
sustainable development, the three key principles of which are social policy, economic
policy and environmental policy. It provides recommendations for any company
wishing to take responsibility for the impact of its activities and decisions. This implies
rethinking its strategy and positioning within the sector.
By acting ethically, sustainably and transparently, we contribute to the health and
wellbeing of society: CSR instils a dynamic of progress for all stakeholders.
1/ Organic Farming
A comprehensive agricultural management system for non-GMO crops without
chemical fertilisers and synthetic pesticides, respectful of people, animals and the
earth. Cultivation and fertilisation techniques must promote soil life, encourage
recycling of organic matter and the use of renewable resources. Producers and
processors are subject to strict regulations guaranteeing that the correct production
methods are implemented and ensuring traceability. Inspections are carried out by
an independent, accredited body according to EU Regulation 834/2007.
2/ Corporate Social Responsibility
3/ Solidarity Trade
Trade solidarity is a key issue in the context of North/North trade for maintaining the
rural fabric and local agriculture, for a sustainable trade policy, fair pay, maintaining
local trade relations, as well as environmental and social progress.
4/ Fair Trade
The fair trade approach provides an economic model based on solidarity through
business partnerships founded on dialogue and transparency, providing producers
in the South with decent living conditions and ensuring that their rights are
respected.

Example of initiatives carried out by Golgemma as part of its CSR and ESR commitments
Case study: Creating rice fields using the SRI method
In 1997, we formed a partnership with
a family business close to the towns
of Moramanga and Anivorano in eastcentral Madagascar. The company
collects and processes the farmers’
crops.
Medicinal and aromatic plants and
spices are grown organically in an area
of approximately 100 hectares.
Since 2010, this partnership has been
enhanced by the introduction of the
ESR programme, with the creation of
a development fund, 3% of which is
financed from the purchase of materials
by Golgemma.
One initiative carried out to help workers become more self-sufficient is the
establishment of a 1.8-hectare organic rice field using the SRI method (System of
Rice Intensification).
This method is based on the tillering of rice plants, a method developed in the 1980s
by the agronomist Father Henri de Launanié.
This low-water system gives better yields with complete nutritional quality.
Golgemma has set up SRI training programmes to give everyone the means to
optimise the use of new systems, monitor growing more effectively and provide
expertise to build irrigation channels.
Farmers who have been trained use what they have learned to help set up other rice
fields for the inhabitants of the surrounding villages.
For the past two years, the rice field has been producing 150 kg of rice per person, a
saving of two months’ wages.
In the future, the development fund derived from our purchases from our Malagasy
partners will enable the farmers to expand the rice field by an additional 1.2 hectares
and rehabilitate four drinking water wells.
At the same time, the modernisation of our partner’s facilities and equipment is
boosting productivity and the quality of the materials is improved as a result.
These advances empower everyone involved – farmers and employees – and makes
them more independent. They are more involved in the projects, in maintaining the
facilities and improving their working and living environment.
The ESR initiatives undertaken since 2010 have resulted in significant progress in
terms of modernisation, productivity, social and environmental impact, and thereby
product quality.
