IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society French Chapter/Chapitre Français Seminar announcement/Annonce de séminaire Title/Titre: Ten years of supercontinuum generation and nonlinear optics in photonic crystal fiber Speaker/Orateur: John Dudley Professeur à l'Université de Franche-Comté, Membre de l'Institut Universitaire de France 2008-2009 IEEE/LEOS Distinguished Lecturer Date : Jeudi 5 février 2009 à 11h/Thursday February 5th, 2009 at 11 a.m. Location/Lieu: TELECOM ParisTech Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications, CNRS/LTCI 46 rue Barrault, 75634 Paris Cedex 13 Room/Pièce : amphithéâtre Grenat Getting there: http://www.enst.fr/en/tools/address/ Comment s’y rendre : http://www.enst.fr/outils/adresse/ Abstract/Résumé: Research in nonlinear fiber optics is currently undergoing dramatic expansion, motivated both by advances and developments in new classes of optical fiber, and the availability of sophisticated numerical modelling techniques. This work will present a survey of selected recent works in this field, surveying in particular the dramatic results achieved in the last decade since the first observation of supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fiber. Results covered will include spectral broadening mechanisms, self-similar evolution of optical pulses in optical fiber amplifiers, pulse compression in photonic bandgap fibers, and dynamical effects in optical nanowires. Biographie/Biography Originally from Otahuhu in New Zealand, John Dudley received B.Sc and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Auckland in 1987 and 1992 respectively. In 1992 and 1993, he carried out postdoctoral research at the University of St Andrews in Scotland before taking a lecturing position in in 1994 at the University of Auckland. In 2000, he was appointed Professor at the University of Franche-Comté in Besançon, France, where he heads the Optoelectronics and Photonics research group. He was named a member of the Institut Universitaire de France in 2005 and elected a Fellow of the Optical Society of America in 2007. He is an IEEE LEOS Distinguished Lecturer for the period 2008-2009.
