CONTE-MOI UN MOUTON! A school contest for elementary and middle school students. Who Can Participate? French classes from elementary schools (grades K-5th) and middle schools (grades 6th-8th) in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee and South Carolina. Contest Theme As a class, imagine and illustrate a story inspired by one or more tales from the traditional storytelling repertoire. Tips and Ideas - Transpose the story to a different time (i.e. to the 21st century) or place (i.e. from Africa to America or Asia). - Change the original story by rethinking the beginning or end, adding an event, introducing a new character, changing the moral of the story, inversing traditional roles (for example, make the step-sisters nice in Cinderella), etc. - Do a « story remix » by combining components from different stories. For example: Snow White could share a house with Goldilocks and the three little pigs, or meet the big bad wolf… To Prepare Your Students - Select a group of stories that will be the source of inspiration for your students. For beginners, we recommend selecting tales that are universally well-known. Favor short stories. To introduce a story, tell the tale using your own words rather than reading it from a book. Storytelling is based in an oral tradition, and the language in original versions is often too advanced for students just beginning their study of French. - Help students feel more confident with new vocabulary by using an illustrated version of the story. This will allow students to familiarize themselves with new vocabulary during the telling of your story. These visual aids can be used again after the story to reinforce students’ comprehension. - Work with your students to: - Identify the main elements of the story they will hear in class (see Appendix 1) - Describe each important place/location in the story (see Appendix 2) - Describe the main characters of the story (see Appendix 3) - Use these elements to create your original story. You can also use some of the activities provided by the National Library of France (BNF): http://expositions.bnf.fr/contes/pedago/atelier/index.htm The illustrations for your original story can be done in collaboration with an art teacher. French teachers can receive a FREE copy of the DVD “Conte-moi” by sending an e-mail to [email protected]. The DVD includes activities for classroom use. www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/audiovisuel-educatif 1 How Do We Participate? Submit your story in the form of a short video (maximum length of 4 minutes). The story must be told aloud through voice-over narration and illustrated with pictures, drawings, etc. All submitted materials must be the students’ original creation. If you use music, you must clearly indicate the song/musical excerpt title and the artist’s name at the end of the video clip. The video must include the names of the students submitting the story. You do not need to pay for special video-editing software to produce your video submission. We recommend using a simple program like Windows Movie Maker: http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/1 The teacher must post the video on YouTube and then provide the link on the contest entry form. The winning videos will be posted on the website of the Cultural Services of the Embassy of France and/or on the website of the Consulate general of France in Atlanta www.frenchculture.org - and on YouTube. All videos received in this contest become the property of the Cultural Services of the Embassy of France in the U.S. What are the Prizes? The 3 best videos will be rewarded with French books for all students and teachers involved in the project. The French teacher of the 1st prize-winning class will receive a one-year subscription to the magazine Le français dans le monde (www.fdlm.org).
