Lettre du Président
Le contenu principal de ce numéro de Réseau est le programme préliminaire de notre
conférence à Turku, qui aura lieu en Finlande vers la fine de juin prochain. Il est évident que
notre programme sera très riche, avec près de 130 séances qui comprendront environ 450
communications, de même que 8 sessions focalisant sur des livres publiés récemment, trois
séances plénières, et la première conférence Karel Dobbelaere. Cette conférence sera un
nouveau élément de notre programme qui apparaîtra en alternation avec la conférence
présidentielle en tant que la quatrième de nos séances plénières lors de chaque conférence. La
conférence Dobbelaere inaugurale sera livré par notre président honoraire lui-même. Le
thème de la conférence, « Repenser la Communauté: Continuités et mutations religieuses dans
la modernité tardive », sera fortement représenté non seulement dans les séances plénières,
mais également dans un grand nombre de sessions thématiques. Nous sommes reconnaissants
des nombreux membres de la société qui ont proposé et ont organisé des séances, qui ont
soumis un riche éventail de propositions de communications excellentes et de nos excellents
conférenciers invités qui prononceront les discours des séances plénières.
Il est de la première importance que vous nous aider à finaliser le programme en vérifiant que
nous avons détaillé votre participation de manière précise et complète dans le programme
préliminaire. De plus, veuillez vérifier que nous n'avons pas par inadvertance introduit des
conflits d'horaire dans le programme. Nous sommes conscients du fait qu'il est assez difficile
d'être dans un endroit à la fois, sans parler de deux ou trois, donc il est important de trouver et
de corriger de telles erreurs dès que possible. Dans ce contexte, je vous rappelle qu'un
participant à la conférence ne peut présenter qu'une seule communication. On peut bien sûr
figurer au programme plus d'une fois dans d'autres rôles, comme auteur, critique,
organisateur, animateur ou répondant, mais dans l'intérêt de maintenir la conférence dans des
proportions gérables, nous vous demandons de vous limiter à une seule communication. La
date limite pour l'envoi des corrections au Secrétaire Général sera le 20 Février 2013 à
l'adresse électronique indiquée dans plus d'un endroit ci-dessous.
Quelques détails supplémentaires :
Vous devez être membre de la Société afin d'être inclus dans le programme. Il est donc
important de renouveler votre adhésion pour la période 2012-2013, si vous ne l'avez pas
encore fait. Vous pouvez ce faire directement sur notre site web à l’adresse suivante :
www.sisr-issr.org (cliquez sur « Adhérer ») et, si possible, par voie électronique. Il est tout de
même encore possible de renouveler par le poste. Le formulaire à imprimer se trouve
également sur le site web, au même endroit (« Adhérer »).
De plus, sur notre site web vous retrouverez aussi toutes les informations techniques dont
vous aurez besoin pour participer à la conférence, y compris les détails concernant
l'hébergement et le transport, des excursions que vous pouvez prendre pendant que vous êtes
là, et divers renseignements pratiques (vous pouvez accéder à cette partie du site web, soit
directement à partir de la page d'accueil ou sous « Congrès « ).
La pré-inscription à la conférence cette année se fera également sur le site web. Cette facilité
sera disponible sur le site web à partir du 15 mars 2013. Je vous rappelle que vous devez
vous pré-inscrire si vous donnez une communication à la conférence. La date limite pour
la pré-inscription pour les présentateurs d’une communication sera le 15 mai 2013. Si, pour
des raisons techniques, de visas ou d'autres raisons, il ne vous sera pas possible de ce faire

dans le délai prévu, veuillez communiquer avec le Secrétaire Général à l’adresse suivante :

Finalement, une autre raison pour laquelle il est important d'être membre, c'est que seuls les
membres pourront voter aux élections du Conseil de cette année (voir ci-dessous) et de voter
sur l'adoption d'un nouveau statut juridique de la Société.
J'ai hâte de vous rencontrer tous et toutes (encore une fois) en juin ! Je suis certain que notre
réunion sera une expérience fantastique.

- si votre proposition apparaît effectivement dans le programme (un problème de courriel
ou un effacement accidentel peut toujours se produire) et si elle apparaît dans la (les)
bonne(s) session(s);
- si votre proposition est correctement présentée (il peut y avoir des erreurs de frappe)
vérifiez particulièrement les adresses électroniques;
- si toute l’information requise est donnée (n’avez-vous pas oublié de fournir la traduction
du titre de votre papier en anglais; votre appartenance institutionnelle et/ou votre adresse
électronique manquent peut-être);
- si dans l’horaire, p. 6, il n’y a pas de chevauchement entre les différentes sessions
auxquelles, lors d’une plage horaire spécifique, vous participez à l’un ou l’autre titre :
orateur, discutant, président (avec l’aide de Mme Chiara Trentin, j’ai vérifié au mieux mais
certaines choses ont pu nous échapper. Bien qu’il était clairement spécifié dans le précédent
Network/Réseau que « Chaque participant ne peut présenter qu’une seule communication » et
que le président d’une session devait être choisi au sein de celle-ci, beaucoup de gens n’ont
pas respecté ces règles. Si vous repérez un chevauchement vous concernant, veuillez

NECROLOGIE DE IVAN VARGA
What do sociologists do when they want to know something about other sociologists? They
read their work. What do sociologists do when one of them just passed away? They are sad,
they feel a loss, they mourn in their personal fashion, and then they read again his or her
work. I went through this process for Ivan.
Ivan was such a great friend and mentor to me and to the Research Committee on the
Sociology of Religion (RC22) that I still have not been able to accept that he is no longer with
us, except through his writings. Like he set himself up to rediscover the hidden secrets of
Simmel, I went through re-discovering his writings. And what a body of work! Ivan had such
a clear mind about social life that you even wonder if he had not created life itself. His writing
is so sharp and so clear when dealing with profound and complex issues that you admire the
great mind and the years of intellectual reflection to reach that stage. As such, for many
academics, he is a great inspiration to follow.
It felt ironic to re-read one of his articles published in Current Sociology in 2005 on the body
in hypermodernity. He was writing about death and it took me by surprise as the event of his
death is still so embodied (a word he liked to use) in me. As he wrote:
“Death, which has ever been a natural event, accepted as such, even though it was painful for
the families, is now becoming a failure to be avoided or at least pushed far away into time.
(As Woody Allen has satirically remarked, ‘in North America death is optional’)”.
I am so glad that Ivan took his ‘option’ so late in his life and that he has been with us,
sociologists of religion at the International Sociological Association, for many years after his
retirement. It also pleases me to realise that when he wrote this article 7 years ago, he must

have certainly come to terms with his own mortality. I am thus confident that he passed away
in peace.
In the same article on the study of the body and religion, he argued at the end that the body
has become sacred in our society. It is thus a paradox (something that sociologists live so well
in their writings and personal life) now that he has no longer a body, that his ideas and
writings will certainly become, as time passes, sacred to sociologists.
Vale Ivan, you are already greatly missed by us and the association you so kindly took under
your wings.

NECROLOGIE DE KAREN PARNA
Tallin, January 23, 1977 – Maastricht 3 september, 2012
Shortly after the birth of her daughter Nora, Karen Pärna died, unexpectedly. Tragically, the
happiest day of her life was her last day. It was also the sudden end of a career that had just
begun.
Born in Tallin, Karen moved with her mother from Estonia to the Netherlands after the
collapse of the Soviet Union. She finished high school and then studied Cultural Studies at
Maastricht University where she obtained her MA in 2001. In 2002 she acquired an MA in
Literary Theory at the University of Oxford. Between 2004 and 2008 she was a PhD
candidate at Leiden University and from 2008 on, junior lecturer in the sociology of religion
at University College of Maastricht.
In January 2010 she receibed her PhD degree from Leiden University. Her dissertation
Believing in the Net, Implicit Religion and the Internet Hype, 1994-2001 was published as a
book. One of her conclusions was that ‘the concept of Implicit Religion is a highly useful
heuristic tool for studying processes of meaning-making in modern Western societies.’
Another conclusion was: ‘The Internet hype of the 1990’s was a prominent and pervasive
manifestation of implicit religiosity’.
Her international background made her both very keen and very apt to participate in
organizations like the Centre for the Study of Implicit Religion and Contemporary Spirituality
and the ISSR/SISR, the International Society for the Sociology of Religion. She was active in
the ISSR by organizing workshops, for instance in 2007 in Leipzig where she also presented a
paper (Meaning, myths and the religious in some recent consumer technology crazes) and in
2011 in Aix-en-Provence, where her paper was When spirituality becomes work: spiritual
labour, wellness and holistic lifestyle marketing; for 2013 Turku conference she organized a
session with Mathew Wood.
We were shocked by her sudden death before she had the chance to develop her abilities to
the full. She was a wonderful person, a fine student and an excellent colleague.
