Faculté des lettres et des sciences humaines Département des littératures Professor: Brad Kent Session: Autumn 2015 ANG-7112/LIT-7099 Literature and Nationalism in Modern Ireland Description: The Irish Literary Revival of the late 1890s and early twentieth century was one of the most dynamic movements in Anglophone and World Literatures. Along with the various political and military efforts, cultural practitioners did much to justify and impel Ireland towards the independence the country finally achieved in 1922 and to offer the creative resistance that inspired anti-colonial struggles around the globe. However, the passions and hopes of this long struggle also led to much disillusion in the post-independence period. Indeed, many writers considered that the state had failed to deliver on the promises of personal, social, and cultural liberation. This course will examine the diverse and important texts and figures of modern Ireland, including Nobel Laureates and major innovators of modernism. Some of the authors we will study will include W.B. Yeats, J.M. Synge, James Joyce, Bernard Shaw, Sean O’Casey, Elizabeth Bowen, Lady Gregory, Liam O’Flaherty, Frank O’Connor, and Sean O’Faolain. By placing poetry, drama, and prose alongside contemporary polemical essays and political theory, we will focus on the competing notions of the nation in the face of changing contexts and the philosophical underpinnings of cultural nationalism.
