". Carole Locatelli et Hugues Charuit, organisateurs de Paris Déco Off. Du 23 au 27 janvier 2014 — www.paris-deco-off.com http://europeanlinenandhempcommunity.eu/2013/01/14/linenlux-j-3-paris-deco-off Paris Déco Off was created as a challenge. How to familiarize consumers with the players in the lifestyle field, the editors of fabrics and trim, of furniture and lighting? How to go about "demystifying" their showrooms, those temples of creation, access to which is often mistakenly assumed to be off-limits to all but a chosen few. The dialogue started in 2009 thanks to the involvement of 47 houses who welcomed 5000 visitors through their doors. Five years later, 75 brands have come together and the 2014 edition brings an injection of newness to Paris Déco Off as it gets ready to conquer a new Parisian route - flying the linen flag! An immersion into each brand's unique and specially customized world (half of the participants are Belgian, Italian, German, Swiss, American, British, and Scandinavian), its history and its expertise. "In January 2013, we teamed up with CELC to create Linen Lux, an installation of 60 lanterns of XXXL dimensions created in European linen by Club Masters of Linen® weaver members. This incursion of linen into the city light up the famous Rue du Mail in Paris, as the "Luce dal Lino" event had previously done in Milan, for the Salone del Mobile in 2009 and 2010. We were both immediately taken by these lanterns, as was Lyne Cohen-Solal, deputy to the Mayor of Paris responsible for commerce, crafts, independent professions and applied arts. It was clear, Paris would have its own linen street! The initiative proved a resounding success, and for 2014 we're repeating it with over a hundred of these ephemeral lanterns. In addition to the Bastille and the Rue du Mail, the Left Bank awaits, the Saint-Germain des Prés quarter, place de Furstenberg, Rues de l'Abbaye, Jacob, Bonaparte, de l'Echaudé… " Carole Locatelli and Hugues Charuit, Pars Déco Off organizers. » "Over recent seasons, knit has been making major inroads into Première Vision Pluriel. It represents 20-40% of collections, and linen is gaining a strong momentum. And linen is a real exception! It is the only European natural fiber textile. In its own way, Première Vision also cuts a unique European figure as, just like the linen fiber, it extends into the international markets. Linen carries its own inherent added value, allowing it to be competitive. Fashion brands are seeking to set themselves apart from other means of consumption. In this, linen has a very powerful card to play." European Flax®: The premium quality linen fibre A green fibre and the fibre of civilization, of innovation and with wide-ranging uses. But what if everything started with the fibre? A fibre from flax recognized as a European exception, with non-transferrable associated level of inherent expertise! One with an origin for which the synonyms - ancestry, lineage, provenance, inception, cradle, pedigree, cultivated land seem to have been directly inspired by the flax and linen industry. Flax fibre now comes with its very own stamp of quality. A non-European weaver can also label his fabrics European Flax® if 100% of the yarn used is European Flax® A producer of technical components can use European Flax® if 100% of the fibres employed are European Flax® A department store chain can label its products European Flax® if 100% of its products are made from European Flax® fabrics 06 —— 07 Label qualitatif d’un lin fibre de qualité premium, la marque European Flax® est lancée en octobre 2012 auprès de la filière et s'appose sur des produits lin, finis ou semi-finis. The qualitative label of premium quality flax fibre, the European Flax® label was launched in october 2012 with the European flax and linen industry and applies to linen products, whether finished or semi-finished. Lifestyle, home and fashion are not the only areas reserved for this label of excellence which extends its sphere to cover high-performance products such as the various applications of flax composites. The principal beneficiary of this measure: the consumer. This highly sought-after visa is not easily obtained, and the criteria for its awarding have been defined in a charter. It refers to flax produced from uniquely textile flax seeds, without any GMO or irrigation, with natural ground retting* and mechanized scutching* in Europe! As for the holder of the label (from agriculture to distribution), the commitment is simple: to produce and label products composed of 100% European flax fibres as European Flax®. A necessary step in the granting of the European Flax® distinction, the Observatoire des Fibres Libériennes* was launched in September 2013 : a joint platform of different specialized Textile and Clothing laboratories allowing for the proper identification of flax, hemp and ramie. An initiative underpinned by the creation and standardization of a protocol for composition analysis. Retting: First natural phase in the transformation process from plant to fibre, the alternating effect of rain and sunshine allows the flax to ret. Thanks to the action of microorganisms and bacteria naturally present in the soil, retting (taking place from July to September) eliminates the pectin that binds the fibres together. Scutching: The flax fibres are contained within the stem's outer layers. In order to utilize them it's necessary to extract them. The second phase of the transformation of the plant into fibre, scutching is a mechanized process. Bast fibre: plant fibre drawn from a plant's outer layers, such as flax, hemp, ramie and jute. Linen/Flax: a subtlety with two meanings/In English, the word "flax" describes the notion of the "fibre", whereas the generic word "linen" encompasses yarn, textile and home fabrics. Surprised to discover flax, in its growing form and as a plant fibre, as a product of European local agriculture. Surprised by the multitude of uses for linen in the worlds of fashion and home, and how at ease it is in the place one might least expect it, in the universe of of high-performance composite products. Surprised by its uniquely European status. Surprised, also, to be welcomed by a team of red apron-wearing farmers and scutchers, spinners and weavers, all drawn from the flax-producing regions. Yes, Europe is the global No.1 producer of flax fibre. Yes, the textile innovations of European spinners, weavers and knitters have reinvented its uses, from washed linen that doesn't have to be ironed to linen knits, an indispensable component of the female and male wardrobe. Yes, flax inspires designers, architects and the automotive, construction and sports industries, among others. The participation of Lincroyable récolte in the Designers’ Days program is illustrative of that. Designed by Hilton McConnico with a great sense of rigor and humor, authenticity and awe-inducing provocation, Lincroyable récolte became Lincredibile raccolto in Florence, on Piazza Santa Maria Novella, in partnership with Pitti Uomo, the international menswear trade fair. * l’exposition grand-public Lincroyable récolte à Paris et à Florence * oriented toward the general public, Lincroyable récolte in Paris and clôture le plan de promotion européen du lin textile baptisé Florence was the ultimate stage of the European linen textile promo- BE LINEN (2010-2013), cofinancé par l’UE, la France et la filière Lin. tional program baptized BE LINEN (2010-2013), jointly funded by the ** 91% des visiteurs déclarent avoir acquis de nouvelles connais- EU, France, and the linen industry. sances sur le lin et sa filière européenne. Designer, artist, scenographer, awarded the César for best set design for The Moon In The Gutter by Jean-Jacques Beineix, celebrated in his native United States which he had left for France in 1965, and a figure of international standing, Hilton McConnico created the set for "Lincroyable récolte". The theme of nature, on which he focused greatly, is a very dear one to him. He succeeded in giving center stage to the flax fibre, its process, and the magic of its transformation. » "Lincroyable Récolte was two stories in one: the place du Palais Royal in Paris, then the piazza Santa Maria Novella in Florence. The open-air scenography had to properly interact with the surrounding architecture, especially as the immediate area was so architecturally rich. Paris was oriented toward a general public that could discover a plant that is, in fact, rather misunderstood. We therefore placed linen's agricultural origin at the forefront by installing a flowering flax field on the Place du Palais Royal. In Florence, we placed the accent on the textile, and its huge variety of textures and colors. The space was smaller, so it was necessary to have strong visuals, and thus the blue monolithic structures. "The 4 Seasons theme is a recurring one in my work already. It's the subject that inspires me the most. But the linen theme had a resonance with my childhood in Tennessee. The immense fields gently rippling in the breeze, the magic of transformation. The subject is a fascinating one, so it was important to transmit that emotion. I grasped the educational aspect with the help of the specialists, and then translated their knowledge and made it accessible. But the most important part is being able to fire the visitor's imagination to make him want to learn more." John Malkovich lent us his voice for Lincroyable récolte. Actor, film and theater director, his obsession with textiles, and linen in particular, is less widely known. He designs a collection called Technobohemian, distributed by Showroomby and sold in Paris at MERCI. » "Theorizing about being and appearing, cultivating elegance and originality, in what we choose to say as much as what we choose to wear - that's how I would sum up a large part of my artistic approach. These desires serve to inform the look of the productions I create or have been in such as for Dangerous Liaisons, I wanted the costumes to have an almost unfinished appearance, most all in linen, going straight for the essential! Linen has a special association, so characteristic of the Grand Tour, the long initiatory voyages that served to round out the educations of those young humanists in the 18th century. I like linen because it has a soul, a lived-in feeling that sets the tone for the men's clothing of my Technobohemian line. Garments are produced in Italy from where I source fabrics chosen for their added value aspect, in 100% linen or a mix, all proof of European traceability as a guarantee of quality. "Composites"? A minimum of two materials combining their respective properties in order to create new ones, this combination creating a much more effective and adaptable result than their single use alone would allow. The automotive sector tops the list of industries utilizing composites with a plant fibre base. The reason being that, from 2015, Europe will have to drive "green": 95% of our vehicle components will need to be recyclable, which is 10% more than today. In order to reduce CO2 emissions, and lower its environmental impact, the market is demanding lighter materials. Flax and hemp, as inexhaustible resources, offer these advantages.
