Next to a house, a car is likely the most expensive single purchase a person will make. While a car can say a lot about lifestyle, personality and taste, many people today prefer to let their personalized licence plates speak for them. 2 Personalized licence plates are rapidly becoming a treasured item for car owners. As a gift for yourself or someone else, they can make a statement about a profession, favourite hobby, status in life or pride in vehicle ownership. The number of characters allowed on personalized licence plates is as follows: For passenger cars and trucks (12 inch plate) — up to seven characters consisting of a combination of letters, numbers, hyphens or spaces. For motorcycles and mopeds (8 inch plate) — up to five characters consisting of a combination of letters, numbers, hyphens or spaces. Personalized licence plates cannot be displayed on: a vehicle registered: the following vehicles: to the Government of Canada commercial and public service vehicles to the Government of Manitoba to any municipality off-road vehicles as a remote area vehicle tractors to a consul or consular agent of any foreign country trailers as an antique car as a taxicab as a livery dealer or repair vehicles 3 Personalized licence plates cannot include: Any profane, sexually suggestive, racial or alcohol/ drug-related words, phrases or innuendoes that may be considered offensive or suggestive, or political messages of any description, in any language. Note: The Registrar of Motor Vehicles reserves the right to recall personalized licence plates that are later deemed to be inappropriate. A hyphen at the beginning or at the end of the slogan. A slogan containing consecutive hyphens and/or spaces. Any combination of letters and numbers that would create an identification problem: Example: 1I8B5S. Any combination of letters and/or numbers duplicating or resembling any existing or proposed regular number plate series, or that would create an identification problem. 4 These combinations of letters and numbers are not acceptable as a personalized licence plate because they would duplicate a regular number plate series. In the following examples, “A” denotes any alphabetic character and “9”denotes any numeric character (from 0 to 9). Renewal is required if new plates are issued. The personalized licence plate fee is not refundable. If you cancel your registration, your personalized licence plates will be returned to you at the time of cancellation in case you subsequently wish to register a vehicle. To order personalized licence plates, complete the attached application form. Upon receipt of your application form and payment, your licence plates will be placed on the next scheduled production order. Once your personalized licence plates have been manufactured, they will be mailed directly to you with instructions on how to activate them. 5 Specialty licence plates Manitoba Public Insurance offers various specialty licence plates to celebrate our community. The cost of the plates is $70, with proceeds supporting local organizations. All passenger vehicles such as cars, trucks, vans and farm trucks qualify for these plates. Commercial trucks, motorcycles, mopeds and all other non-passenger vehicles do not qualify. You can apply for specialty licence plates for each applicable vehicle you own. Registered owners can also purchase the plates as a souvenir keepsake. Only one set of plates will be issued per applicable vehicle. Note: These plates are a pre-established set of letters and numbers and cannot be personalized. We’re honouring this service and sacrifice by offering unique licence plates to veterans. Guidelines for Ordering an Amateur Radio Operator Licence Plate (VE4) VE4 plates can be ordered for passenger cars, non-commercial trucks and farm trucks. Once your VE4 licence plates have been manufactured, they will be mailed directly to you with instructions on how to activate them. 7 Guidelines for Ordering Replacement Personalized or Amateur Radio Operator Licence Plates If one or both of your personalized or amateur radio operator licence plates become lost, stolen or destroyed, you must apply for a regular licence plate replacement at any Autopac agent or Manitoba Public Insurance Service Centre. You will then be issued regular licence plates. Then To order replacement of your personalized or amateur radio operator licence plates, complete the enclosed application form. Upon receipt of your application and payment, your licence plates will be placed on the next scheduled production order. Once your licence plates have been remanufactured, they will be mailed directly to you with instructions on how to reactivate. 8 This publication is also available in large print, audio tape or braille on request.
