Stochastics
Short film, HD video and 35mm, 6 minutes.
Conception and Direction, David Kidman.
When you are a child, you learn how to walk. You don’t necessarily analyse your movements at the time, even though it is a painful learning curve. For a lot of boys, as well as a
small majority of girls in this world, there will be a second period of apprenticeship as a professional walker; military service, when you must forget to walk and learn to march. This film is
partly about the way in which I learn to walk, the way in which cinema learned to walk and partly
how to aim at the right targets.
In the great capitals of the world, there is almost always a place destined for military
display, either in the form of a parade or in a monument used as a pretext for reifying former
glories. These places are, for the rest of the year, invested by tourists, who wander from one end
to the other, taking photographs, looking up and looking around, talking and generally hanging
around. Even so, at least once a year, these mis-programmed wanderings are put aside in favour
of a proof of current or historical military might through organised marching.
So Stochastics investigates the possibility of making a primitive film, using a flea market Rolleiflex from the fifties, shooting on 120mm black and white film on which each roll takes
twelve pictures. Each of the sequences of the film, as well as all the still images, uses only the
twelve views from the same film (sometimes only eleven and a half, sometimes even ten, when
the loading or unloading of the film went wrong. This primitive equipment is much the same as
that available before the first movie cameras and could have easily been made for a Zoetrope or
Praxinoscope.
On the other hand, I used a combination of Final Cut and After Effects to edit the scanned films on HD video, software that is generally intended for the entertainment industries today.
One of the major problems was to position the photograph in the right place, and sometimes
displace, enlarge or reduce it to make the sequence work. The target based technology which this
involves may be widely used today, but finds its roots in military targeting technology.
In a way, the film will always remain unfinished, as there are other places in which the
walk shots will be taken, which will be added to the film in progress. The last place determines
the soundtrack; the soundtrack uses the form of a musical fugue, as does the editing. For each
version of the film, the sound track will depend on the last place visited, but not yet added to
the film, in this version, shown as work in progress during a lecture and screening tour of Japan,
the soundtrack consists of my friend Yo Ota telling me how to say “I don’t speak Japanese.” in
Japanese; phonetically “Watashua nohongua hana semase”, the words are slowed down and speeded up to make up the notes and sequences in a fugue full of mistakes. The last sequence plays
on the word fugue’s meaning in French, which is to escape or run away.
