Perle du XVIIIe siècle investie par les architectes contemporains, cultivée
jusqu’à élever la terre en vin. Inscrite au patrimoine mondial, cette cité
océane de tout temps ouverte au vent du monde a su en capter les attraits
tout en préservant sa civilisation deux fois millénaire.
A pearl of 18th-century architecture besieged by contemporary architects,
so cultivated that its very soil is transmuted into fine wine. Today a World
Heritage site, this maritime city has been open to the winds of the world
from time immemorial. It was able to capture its charms while preserving
its two-thousand year-old civilisation.

Négociante et bourgeoise, portuaire et populaire, noble et cultivée, Bordeaux est insaisissable comme tous les caractères.
« Prenez Versailles et mêlez-y Anvers » décrit Victor Hugo en 1843. « On n’a pas assez vanté Bordeaux (...) une ville curieuse,
originale, peut-être unique » ajoute-t-il.
Cette ville de tous temps ouverte au monde est appréciée
de ses habitants.
Le fleuve, si large, leur offre le
ciel. La forêt et la campagne

un amphithéâtre romain, là
du gothique Renaissance, le
classicisme du Grand Siècle
à foison, le XXe de l’Art déco

Bordeaux’s character is indefinable: businesslike and bourgeois, a port with a vibrant popular culture,
as well as noble and cultivated. “Take Versailles and mix it with Antwerp” as Victor Hugo described it in 1843, adding:
“We do not boast enough about Bordeaux ( ) a curious, unusual city - perhaps even unique”.
The locals appreciate the
way this city has always
been open to the world. The
wide river vista offers them
a panorama of the sky. The
city is near forests and open

countryside, not far from the
ocean, and with easy access
to the mountains. From
the Roman amphitheatre,
to Renaissance Gothic, the

THE DISTRICTS
Le cœur XVIIIe qui avait subjugué le romancier et poète est toujours là,
centre du plus vaste ensemble urbain inscrit au patrimoine mondial de l’humanité.
Seul le port marchand a depuis glissé en aval, libérant les quais à une heureuse flânerie
entre les emblèmes contemporains de la ville. Prenez Bordeaux, mêlez-vous à elle,
et vous hériterez de 2000 ans de culture.
The 18th-century city centre, which so enchanted the novelist and poet,
remains the focal point of a vast urban environment listed as a World Human Heritage site.
Only the cargo port has since moved downstream, opening up the waterfront for strollers
to appreciate broad views of the city’s emblematic contemporary buildings.

L’héritage monumental du Siècle des Lumières
Entièrement dédié à l’aristocratie marchande du XVIIIe siècle,
« Le Triangle » étale ses fastes sur ses façades et sa puissance dans ses allées, ainsi
l’ont voulu les Intendants Boucher et de Tourny à l’origine des travaux d’urbanisme.

GRAND-THÉÂTRE
Avec les opéras de Versailles
et de Turin, le Grand-Théâtre
possède l’une des plus belles
salles de spectacle du XVIIIe
siècle au monde ! Garnier,
l’architecte de l’Opéra de
Paris, se découvrit en visitant
le « Palais de Louis ». Ce chefd’œuvre de Victor Louis a été
édifié à l’époque de Louis
XVI. Cet architecte parisien
avait tout prévu dans les
moindres détails : salle de
concert, café, boutiques et
même tripots…

Spectaculaire par son acoustique et sa structure, la plus
grande fosse d’Europe a été
réalisée pour l’Opéra National
de Bordeaux, qui développe
une offre musicale dans de
multiples répertoires :
jazz, classique, contemporain,
musique du monde...

beautiful concert halls in the
world! Garnier, the architect of

“Louis’ Palace”. Victor Louis built
this masterpiece under the
reign of Louis XVI. The Parisian

Sculpture contemporaine
Sanna est l’une des sept
figures féminines de l’artiste
Jaume Plensa. Cette série
représente un nouveau
chemin de réflexion et
d’expérimentation artistique
dans l’oeuvre de Plensa.

by the artist Jaume Plensa. The

La plus grande place
d’Europe. Face au fleuve, deux
colonnes rostrales surmontées
de statues dédiées aux activités maritime et commerciale
de Bordeaux. En remontant
les statues colossales des
philosophes bordelais Montaigne et Montesquieu. Puis,
le Monument aux Girondins
composé de ses fontaines
jaillissantes en bronze et de
sa colonne surmontée d’une
statue de la liberté brisant ses
chaînes. C’est un hommage
posthume aux Girondins de la
Révolution. Accueille les foires
traditionnelles et spectacles
sous chapiteaux.
Quinconces Esplanade
Facing the river, with two
rostral columns topped with
statues representing the
maritime and commercial
activities of Bordeaux.
Further along are the colossal
statues of Bordeaux’s native
philosophers, Montaigne
and Montesquieu. Finally,
the Girondists Monument
composed of gushing bronze
fountains and a column
topped with a statue depicting
Liberty Breaking Her Chains.
It is a posthumous tribute to
the Girondist Revolutionaries.
Hosts traditional fairs and
big-top circus shows.
Michel Duplessy was the
architect who planned its
layout and the façade, inspired
by the Church of the Gesù in
Rome. Close to the church, the
Cour Mably Courtyard and the
Chapter House are timeless
places where concerts, openair screening and exhibitions
are held all year round.

ANCIEN COUVENT

Ce sont les seuls vestiges
du couvent des Dominicains
installés dans ce quartier
depuis le XIIIe siècle. C’est
l’architecte Pierre Michel
Duplessy qui élabora son plan
et sa façade inspirés de l’église
du Gesu à Rome. A proximité
de l’église, la cour Mably et
la salle capitulaire sont des
endroits hors du temps où se
déroulent concerts, projections
en plein air et expositions,
toute l’année.

porte défensive (1493-1496)

lourds mâchicoulis, mais la
Renaissance toute proche y
amène un nouveau langage
architectural : fenêtres à meneaux, décoration sculptée.

defensive gate (1493-1496)
dedicated to King Charles VIII
of France, victor of the Battle of
Fornovo (Italy). While certainly
a military edifice equipped
with a portcullis and capped

period brought with it a new
architectural language of mullioned windows and freestone

En 1096, le pape Urbain II
consacre la première cathédrale de Bordeaux. En 1305,
Bertrand de Goth, archevêque
de Bordeaux, élu pape sous
le nom de Clément V donne
une nouvelle impulsion à la
construction. Conçue sur un
plan de croix latine, la cathédrale Saint-André constitue un
très bel exemple de gothique
méridional. La porte Royale,
construite au XIIIe siècle, est
peuplée de remarquables
sculptures. Deux mariages
royaux y furent célébrés celui
d’Aliénor d’Aquitaine et de
Louis VII (1137), futur roi de
France, et celui de Louis XIII et
Anne d’Autriche (1615).

Cette porte défensive servit
aussi de prison. Les jeunes
gens qui se conduisaient
mal étaient enfermés dans
ses geôles munies de portes
épaisses et garnies d’énormes

disaient qu’ils logeaient à
l’hôtel du Lion d’Or, une allusion à la girouette du dôme
central représentant le roi des
animaux, un des symboles

joked that they were lodging
at the Golden Lion Hotel, an
allusion to the weather vane

Clocher isolé de la cathédrale
Le clocher du XIIe siècle
était insuffisamment trapu
pour soutenir les cloches et
accueillir le bourdon. Il fallut
donc construire un clocher
détaché de la cathédrale.
Ainsi fut fait en 1440, la tour
Pey-Berland grignotait le ciel
bordelais, une flèche tirait
le clocher vers le haut. En
1617 une tempête arracha ce
rostre. Ce n’est qu’en 1853
que fut hissée une statue
monumentale de Notre
Dame d’Aquitaine. C’est
assurément le plus beau
belvédère panoramique sur
la ville, vaut le détour !
Pey Berland Tower
Bell Tower from the Cathedral
The 12th century bell tower
was insufficiently squat to
support the bells and hold the
Great Bell. It was necessary,
therefore, to build a bell tower
separate from the cathedral.
And so it was done, in 1440
the Pey-Berland Tower scraped
the skies over Bordeaux, a
spire drew the tower upwards.
In 1617, a storm tore away this
pinnacle. It was only in 1853
that a monumental statue of
Our Lady of Aquitaine was
raised on top. This is undoubtedly the finest panoramic
viewing platform in the city,
well worth a visit!

C’est la plus grande des églises
paroissiales de Bordeaux. Son
origine est probablement carolingienne. De style gothique
flamboyant, elle se compose
de trois nefs de quatre travées
coupées par le transept qui
précède les trois absides polygonales entourant le chœur. À
l’intérieur, on notera une très
belle Descente de croix datée
de 1493, une tribune d’orgue
et une chaire du XVIIIe siècle.

Le palais Rohan rappelle la
grandeur et la puissance des
archevêques de Bordeaux
au XVIIIe siècle. L’archevêque
Mériadec de Rohan fait appel
en 1772 à l’architecte Joseph
Etienne pour construire
son nouveau palais. Son
financement sera assuré en
partie par la création d’un
vaste lotissement (l’actuel
quartier Mériadeck). Après la
Révolution, il deviendra hôtel
du département puis préfecture de la Gironde puis hôtel
de ville en 1837. A l’intérieur,
l’un des plus beaux escaliers
de France, considéré comme
un des chefs-d’œuvre de taille
de la pierre français.

The Palais Rohan recalls the
splendour and power of the
archbishops of Bordeaux in
the 18th century. In 1772,
the archbishop Mériadec de
Rohan commissioned the
architect Joseph Etienne to
build him a new palace. The
work was funded, in part,
by the creation of a vast

dwelling place (the present
Mériadeck district). After
the Revolution, it became
the District Hall, then the
Prefecture of Gironde, then
Town Hall in 1837. Inside the
building is one of the most
beautiful staircases in France,
considered a masterpiece of
French stonemasonry.

The Hâ Fortress
Contemporary Renovation
In 1972, the French National
School for the Judiciary
decentralised to Bordeaux. It was
established on the site of the
former Fort du Hâ, a fortress built
by Charles VII of France following
his victory against the English, of
which only two towers remain. To
the east, the School (1969-72 by
Guillaume Gillet) and to the west,
in extension to the courthouse,
the silhouettes of the wooden
husks of the seven courtrooms
of the High Court (1994-98 by
Richard Rogers).

Cette exposition exceptionnelle, organisée en partenariat
avec le palais Fesch, réunit
une sélection d’une centaine
d’oeuvres issues des plus prestigieuses collections publiques
nationales (dont le musée du
Louvre, le musée d’Orsay, le
musée Rodin, le Petit Palais,
la Bibliothèque nationale
de France). Elle renouvelle
le regard sur les arts du XIXe
siècle en plongeant le visiteur
dans l’univers visuel et musical
de cette époque foisonnante.
La découverte de la figure
polymorphe de la bacchante,
est un thème novateur et
fédérateur qui trouve un écho
particulier dans la cité de
Bacchus, en préfiguration à
l’ouverture de la Cité du Vin et
de la 10e édition de Bordeaux
Fête le Vin en juin.

This exceptional exhibition,
organised in partnership with
the Palais Fesch, assembles
a selection of about one
hundred works from the most
prestigious national public
collections (including the
Louvre, the Orsay Museum, the
Rodin Museum, the Petit Palais
and the National Library of
France). It casts a new light on
19th century art by immersing
the visitor in the visual and
musical universe of this
burgeoning era. The discovery
of the polymorphic figure of
the bacchante is an innovative
and unifying theme, which has
particular resonance in the City
of Bacchus, as a prelude to the
inauguration of the Cité du
Vin and the 10th edition of the
Bordeaux Wine Festival in June.

l’ambiance raffinée d’un hôtel
particulier aristocratique «entre
cour et jardin» à l’époque de
Louis XVI, l’un des plus beaux
de Bordeaux, avec son superbe
escalier, ses salons boisés et
parquetés, ses cheminées
de marbre et les vestiges de
son décor d’origine, c’est un
remarquable exemple de
ce que furent les demeures
de l’aristocratie bordelaise à
la fin de l’Ancien Régime. La
muséographie sensible offre
quelques reconstitutions à la
manière des “period rooms”
américaines et parallèlement
aux expositions dédiées aux
arts décoratifs, impulse une
dynamique nouvelle consacrée
au design et à la création

jardin” (between entrance courtyard and garden) under Louis
XVI. One of the most beautiful
in Bordeaux, with its superb
staircase, its panelled walls and
parquet flooring, its marble
fireplaces and traces of original
décor, it is a remarkable
example of the homes of
Bordeaux’s aristocracy at the
end of the Ancien Régime
period. A sensitive museography displays reconstructions
in the manner of American
“period rooms”. In parallel to
the exhibitions dedicated to
the decorative arts, it gives a
new impetus to design and
contemporary creation.

SAINT SEURIN
Le site archéologique de
Saint Seurin constitue
probablement le berceau du
christianisme bordelais, à
l’époque gallo-romaine.
En 1910, des fouilles archéologiques permirent de mettre
à jour, devant la basilique, une
vaste nécropole chrétienne,
aux sépultures superposées,
s’étageant du IVe au XVIIIe siècle.
Ici, Charlemagne aurait fait
inhumer les corps de ses preux
chevaliers morts à Roncevaux.
St Seurin Early Christian Site
The archaeological site of Saint
Seurin is probably the cradle
of Christianity in Bordeaux, in
the Gallo-Roman era. In 1910,
archaeological excavations, in
front of the basilica, revealed a
vast Christian necropolis with
superimposed graves, ranging
from the 4th to the 18th
century. Here, Charlemagne is
said have buried the bodies of
his valiant knights killed in the
Battle of Roncevaux Pass.

Basilica of St Seurin
Built during the 11th to 16th
centuries, restored in the 19th
century. As early as the 4th
century, converts settled on
the site of a large Gallo-Roman
necropolis where they built
their first chapel. In the 11th
century, the canons undertook
the construction of a large Romanesque building, of which
the porch, the chevet, the crypt
and the base of the bell tower
still exist. Work continued
on the building with the
addition of several chapels
in the 16th century and a
neo-Romanesque frontage by
Poitevin and Maggesi in the
19th century. The guardian of
important relics such as those
of Saint Benedict and Saint
Veronica, the staff of Saint Martial and the olifant of Roland
later transferred to the basilica
of Saint Romain de Blaye.

PALAIS GALLIEN
Le Palais Gallien est
aujourd’hui l’unique vestige
visible de la ville romaine
de Burdigala. Construit au
début du IIe siècle après J-C,
ses dimensions d’origine
sont imposantes, 130 mètres
de long pour 114 mètres de
large. Cet amphithéâtre était
situé à la périphérie de la ville
antique. On y donnait des
jeux parfois cruels devant des
foules importantes. 20 à
25 000 personnes pouvaient y
prendre place sur des gradins
en bois !
Palais Gallien
The Palais Gallien is today the
only visible remains of the
Roman city of Burdigala. Built
in the early 2nd century AD,
its original dimensions are
impressive, 130 meters long
and 114 meters wide. The
amphitheatre was located on
the outskirts of the ancient
city. Games - often cruel - were
held here before large crowds.
20-25 000 people could be
seated on terraced rows of
wooden benches!

Le Parc Rivière fut d’abord
celui de la résidence privée
jusqu’en 1827 du Baron

On y découvre diverses essences arborées âgées d’une
centaine d’années (cyprès
chauves, chênes verts...), mais
aussi des ruches.
River Park
Up until 1827, Rivière Park
belonged to the private residence of Baron Alfred de Luze
who made it into a veritable
chateau. Its decor with many
historical references caused
much surprise. Its undergrowth borders the ruins of
a castle. Here can be found
various hundred-year-old tree
species such as bald cypress
and holm oaks... it also has
beehives.

1 LE PAVÉ
DES CHARTRONS
Artère résidentielle du grand
négoce bordelais, l’ancienne
promenade pavée des Chartrons, du nom des charteux qui
s’installèrent dans le quartier
à la fin du XIVe siècle, est un
bel exemple de lotissement
privé, présentant vers 1770
une remarquable unité architecturale, inspiré par Etienne
Laclotte. Face au fleuve, l’Hôtel
Fenwick construit dans le
goût palladien en 1796 pour
le consulat des Etats-Unis est
situé en un point stratégique.
En effet, du haut des deux
pavillons de son toit, l’heureux
propriétaire pouvait observer
les mouvements des bateaux
dans le port.

the great Bordeaux wine merchants, the old paved Pavé des
Chartrons avenue, named after
the Chartreux (Carthusian)
Monks who settled in the area
in the late 14th century, is a
fine example of a private housing estate, which presented
around 1770 a remarkable
architectural unity, inspired by
Etienne Laclotte. Facing the river, the Hôtel Fenwick built in
the Palladian style in 1796 for
the US Consulate is located at
a strategic point. Indeed, from
the two lodges on its roof, the
proud owner could observe
the comings and goings of
ships in the harbour.

Paul Abadie, grande figure de

de Paris. Son bulbe élancé couronné d’un lanternon sur colonnette, fait écho à la basilique
du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre,
dont il est l’architecte.

A huge fan zone
A «fan zone» will be set up on
the Quinconces esplanade to
welcome supporters from all
over the world throughout the
competition. It will be one of
the largest fan zones among
the 10 EURO 2016 host cities,
with a capacity of 60,000 fans.
The 51 matches will be broadcast on a giant screen. This will
bring back fond memories to
some supporters, who were
among the 80,000 spectators
present in 2009, when the
Girondins de Bordeaux won the
French championship.
The fan zone will be an entirely
free service, bringing supporters together for matches and
celebrations. During the event,
91 activities on a variety of
themes have been selected by
Bordeaux City Hall to provide
an exciting programme. In
particular, these projects
will focus on the position of
women in sport and European
values. Concerts will be also
be organized on days when no
matches are scheduled.
