HISTORY and OWNERSHIP African Defence Systems, (ADS), situated in Midrand, South Africa was founded in 1955 as an Engineering Consultancy Company. Today Thales International owns 60% of the shareholding of ADS with 20% of the shareholding held by a Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) company - Futuristic Business Solution and the other 20% of the shareholding by another BEE company - Nkobi Investments. B. EXPERTISE Since the early days of ADS the cornerstone of its business model has been value for money, innovation and ingenuity. The company pioneered in various technologies that are household names today. The first concept demonstrator of the Digital Satellite Decoder was designed by ADS. The Netstar Vehicle Tracking System also has its roots in ADS, where it was initially designed and a prototype was manufactured. For the past 30 years ADS has been involved in designing advanced digital command and control systems for Military and Civilian applications. The most recent system delivered in the Civil market was the Air Tower Visual Simulator to ATNS. Since 1975, ADS has been the primary supplier of Command & Control Systems to the South African Navy. These systems were designed, developed, integrated and delivered in close co-operation with the users. ADS currently maintains and supports these systems under contract from the SA Navy. ADS has a track record with the SA Army, providing them with Artillery Target Engagement systems since 1980. ADS is currently busy with the fifth-generation system contracted by the SA Army. ADS was awarded a Tactical intelligence Systems contract from the SA Army in March 2006. ADS boasts an international reputation for cost-effective turnkey systems in its core business of command and control and associated training solutions for various clients. For more than 25 years, the company has enjoyed sustained growth from its intimate involvement in the design, development, integration and support of sophisticated, high technology electronics for various applications.
