We’ve got lots of French songs and stories for you to listen to. You might have heard some already on the Salut Serge DVD. If you want, you can use this CD with your activity book – look at the pictures as you listen to the stories. It’s on page three of the activity book if you want to follow the pictures. Sting NARR: L’arrivee de Serge Pascale the parrot lives alone in her little tree house in the jungle. It’s always neat and tidy – just like Pascale herself! This afternoon, she’s having a quiet read, when all of a sudden... [SFX: sound of knock on door] SERGE: PASC: Salut! Who can that be? NARR: Pascale gets up to open the door. SERGE: PASC: Salut! Er... Bonjour?? NARR: The visitor is a monkey. A very cheeky-looking monkey. Pascale doesn’t know him. In fact, she’s not really too keen on monkeys at all! But this one seems friendly enough. He introduces himself with a friendly grin. SERGE: PASC: Je m’appelle Serge. Salut Serge. Moi, je m’appelle Pascale. NARR: Serge wanders into the tree-house and has a look around. He likes what he sees. Yes, it’d be great to live in a tree-house like this. SERGE: PASC: Elle est super ta maison. Oui. NARR: Pascale is not too sure what Serge is up to. Just as she makes up her mind to ask him he rushes back outside and reappears at the door a few seconds later holding a large suitcase. SERGE: Mes baggages. © BBC Worldwide Ltd 2006. Page 2 PASC: Tes baggages? [SFX: Thud of suitcase] NARR: His luggage? Pascale is mystified. She hasn’t invited him to stay. What’s going on? Serge dashes off again, and comes back with as second suitcase. [SFX: Patter of feet. Thud of suitcase] SERGE: Un. Deux. NARR: Pascale is not at all pleased. PASC: Ah, non! NARR: And here he comes again with more bags. PASC: Trois. Quatre. NARR: By evening time, Pascale is feeling quite exhausted. Her visitor has stayed all afternoon. He’s made himself quite at home, and she’s beginning to feel like she’s the visitor. But it’s late now, and Pascale is not the only one who’s feeling tired. SERGE: PASC: Je suis fatigué. [to herself] Thank goodness. He’s tired. He must be going at last. [to Serge] Tu partes? Au Revoir! NARR: However, Serge has no intention of leaving. He likes the tree-house, he likes Pascale, and he’s made up his mind – he’s here to stay. He clambers up into a little hammock in the corner and snuggles down. SERGE: PASC: Mmm.... Je reste. Bonne nuit Pascale. [to herself] It looks as though he’s here to stay. Ah well. [to Serge] Bonne nuit. Bonne nuit, Serge. ~~~~TRACK NARR: 4 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Let’s listen to some songs now. The first is called “Salut”, which means ‘Hello’. [Song continues through to end] ~~~~TRACK NARR: 7 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The next story is called ‘Qu’est-ce que tu aimes faire?’ That means, ‘What do you like doing?’ It’s on page fifteen of the activity book if you want to follow the pictures. Sting NARR: Qu’est-ce que tu aimes faire? Most monkeys love to jump about and make a noise, and Serge is no exception. Serge loves pop music. Loud pop music. Really loud. The louder the better. One day, just as Pascale the parrot is trying to have a quiet read, Serge decides to play some loud music. [SFX: Loud, funky music] PASC: [spoken over the music] Serge! La musique – c’est trop fort! NARR: Pascale doesn’t like loud music at all. She’s a bit annoyed. Surely there must be something else Serge likes doing? Something that won’t disturb her? PASC: SERGE: Tu as d’autres passe-temps? Oui. NARR: Actually, Serge likes doing lots of things. Playing computer games. SERGE: Les jeux vidéo – genial! [SFX: sound of computer games] PASC: NARR: Ah non! Playing basketball. SERGE: Et j’adore le basket! [SFX: sound of bouncing ball] PASC: Oww! Je déteste le basket. NARR: Pascale doesn’t seem to like any of the things Serge likes doing. He wonders what she does like. SERGE: PASC: Qu’est-ce que tu aimes faire, Pascale? Moi? NARR: Pascale’s hobbies are quite different. Not noisy and wild at all. PASC: SERGE: PASC: SERGE: PASC: SERGE: J’aime les maths. Huh! J’aime le cinéma. Mmmm... Et j’aime lire. Prrr....! NARR: There must be something they both like. Not all games are rough and noisy. How about Hide and Seek? © BBC Worldwide Ltd 2006. Page 4 SERGE: J’aime jouer à cache-cache. NARR: Great! Hide and Seek! At last! A game they both want to play. PASC: OK. Toi, tu te caches. Moi, je compte. NARR: Serge is going to hide, while Pascale counts. She covers her eyes with her wings, and starts to count. PASC: Un. Deux. Trois... NARR: Serge rushes away to look for a good place to hide. He finds the perfect place and calls out to tell Pascale he’s ready. SERGE: Ca y est! NARR: And Pascale calls back to say she’s coming. PASC: J’arrive! NARR: But – wait a minute! Pascale says she’s coming, but she’s not even moving! She just starts reading her magazine again. What’s going on? [SFX: sound of ticking clock] NARR: Three hours later, Serge has still not been found. He’s still crouching in his dark hiding place, looking a bit grumpy and mumbling to himself. He just can’t understand what has gone wrong. SERGE: Où est Pascale? NARR: And where is Pascale? It’s quite dark outside the tree-house now. Pascale is still sitting reading magazines, and it’s really not surprising that Serge hasn’t been found – Pascale hasn’t even tried to find him. It looks as though she has found something though – the ideal way to get some peace. PASC: Ah oui. J’adore jouer à cache-cache. NARR: Poor Serge! ~~~~TRACK NARR: 8 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In this next song, Serge and Pascale sing about all the things they like doing. It’s called ‘Les passe-temps’, which means pastimes. [song 5 – Les passe-temps] Le Basket – ça, c’est chouette!.... [Song continues through to end] ~~~~TRACK NARR: 9 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here’s another song. This one’s about the weather. It’s called ‘Il pleut’. ‘It’s raining’. If you listen carefully, you’ll be able to hear the rain falling. Plic ploc, plic ploc, plic ploc. Join in with Serge and Pascale if you can. [song 6 – Il pleut] Quel temps fait-il? Il fait beau?.... This one is called ‘Un animal à la maison’, which means ‘a pet’. You can find it on page twenty of the activity book, if you want to follow the pictures. Sting NARR: Un animal à la maison. Inside the tree-house, both Serge and Pascale are sitting reading. Serge does usually like reading, but this is a very interesting book with lots of pictures of pets, and Serge loves animals. Suddenly he has a brilliant idea! Why don’t they get a pet for the tree-house? SERGE: PASC: J’ai une idée. Je vais achèter un animal. Un animal chez nous? Impossible! NARR: Pascale is not at all keen on the idea. But that doesn’t stop Serge. He just needs to decide which pet would suit them best. What about a cat? Cats are cute and furry. SERGE: Un chat! Les chats sont mignons! NARR: But cats and parrots don’t go together. PASC: Ah non. Je n’aime pas les chats. NARR: A lot of people have dogs. Dogs are intelligent animals. SERGE: PASC: Un chien? Les chiens sont intelligents. Non! NARR: That doesn’t suit Pascale either. But Serge is not put off. He has plenty of ideas. SERGE: PASC: Un poney? Les poneys sont adorables. Non! Un petit animal! NARR: ‘Petit’. Small. Pascale is only interested in having a pet if it is a small one. A goldfish for example. PASC: Peut-être – un poisson. NARR: But the sort of fish that Serge likes are bigger than that. Much bigger. Like sharks. SERGE: J’adore les requins. NARR: Serge doesn’t want to upset Pascale. He sets off for the pet shop reassuring her he’ll buy them a nice, sensible, small pet. Later that day, Serge arrives back at the tree-house very excited. He’s carrying a large cardboard box with little holes in the side. It’s their new pet. SERGE: Regarde! C’est notre animal! NARR: Pascale can’t wait to see inside. They lift the lid off the box and peer in. PASC: Un hamster. NARR: But as soon as they lift the lid off the box, quick as a flash, the little hamster jumps out and scuttles away. SERGE: Oh non! Où est-il? © BBC Worldwide Ltd 2006. Page 6 NARR: They search the tree-house from top to bottom, but it’s no use – the hamster has disappeared. Later that evening, as they are sitting chatting, they decide that the hamster was just too small. What they need is a pet too big to lose. Serge comes up with another idea. SERGE: Un hamster – c’est trop petit. Mais, un éléphant....? NARR: I suppose it would be difficult to lose an elephant! But somehow I don’t think an elephant is the ideal pet if you live in a tree-house. Do you? ~~~~TRACK 11 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Now, here’s a song about animals. Big animals and little animals. It’s called ‘Grand et petit’. ‘Big and little’. [song 7 – Grand et petit] Un éléphant, un éléphant. C’est grand, c’est grand.... [Song continues through to end] ~~~~TRACK NARR: 12 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The next song is all about which way to go. Remember, ‘à droite’ means ‘right’ and ‘à gauche’ means ‘left’. Put out your right hand every time you hear ‘à droite’ in the song and every time you hear them sing ‘à gauche’, put out your left hand. [song 8 – En Avant] Un pas en avant, un pas en avant.... [Song continues through to end] ~~~~TRACK NARR: 13 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In the next story, Serge decides to brighten up the tree-house. The story is called ‘Les couleurs vives’, which means ‘bright colours’. You can find it on page twentyseven of the activity book if you want to follow the pictures as you listen. Sting NARR: Les couleurs vives. One day, Serge sits in his hammock and has a really good look around. In the tree-house, everything is decorated in pale, pastel colours. He imagines how much nicer it would look if it were decorated in bright colours, like red or orange or yellow. Serge loves bright colours. He must tell Pascale at once – the colours in the tree-house are dull. They must re-decorate. SERGE: PASC: On va changer la maison. Je veux des couleurs différents. Ah non! NARR: Pascale doesn’t sound too keen on the idea. She doesn’t like bright colours. But Serge is sure that she’ll like a change. He snaps his fingers. [SFX: snap fingers] NARR: And hey presto! – Everything in the room turns bright red! SERGE: Pascale – Tu aimes le rouge? NARR: Pascale squawks in horror! PASC: Sqwarrrrk! © BBC Worldwide Ltd 2006. Page 7 NARR: Oh all right then – not red, but there are lots of other lovely bright colours. Serge is not put off. Blue is a wonderful colour. He snaps his fingers again. [SFX: snap fingers] NARR: And this time, the room turns bright blue. Serge looks very pleased with the effect, but Pascale looks a bit grumpy. SERGE: PASC: Tu aimes le bleu? Non. Je n’aime pas le bleu. C’est moche. NARR: Blue won’t do either. There must be a colour that will suit them both. Serge snaps his fingers again ... [SFX: snap fingers] NARR: ... and the whole room turns a dazzling shade of yellow. SERGE: PASC: Oooh! Ce’st beau, ca! Tu aimes le jaune? C’est affreux! NARR: Serge tries a hundred and one different colour schemes, but Pascale is not happy with any of them. That is, not until Serge turns the room back to its original colour scheme. It’s exactly the same as it was before Serge started! Pascale looks around approvingly and nods her head. SERGE: PASC: Et ça? Ça – ce n’est pas mal. J’aime bien les couleurs. NARR: By this time, Serge is getting a bit bored with all the changes. He’s starting to feel tired, and climbs up into his hammock. SERGE: Je suis fatigué. NARR: But, just before he drops off to sleep, Serge has one last thought. There is one colour he hadn’t thought of. SERGE: Il y a une autre couleur que j’aime beaucoup. NARR: Another colour? Pascale looks up from her book, puzzled. PASC: Une autre couleur? NARR: Serge snaps his fingers one last time ... [SFX: snap fingers] NARR: ... and the whole room turns ... black. It’s pitch-black! Pascale can’t see a thing! PASC: Noir? Oh, je n’aime pas le noir! Serge! Serge! Oh la la! ~~~~TRACK NARR: 14 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here’s a song about colours. SERGE: Hmm hmmm [humming a tune to himself] NARR: Serge is up early this morning. It’s a special morning. A very special morning for him. Today is his birthday. Serge loves birthdays. All those cards and presents. But he’s rather surprised that there’s no sign of any cards or presents about. Nothing at all! That’s odd. Very odd! SERGE: Où sont les cartes? Où sont les cadeaux? NARR: Now, here’s Pascale. PASC: SERGE: PASC: Bonjour Serge. Bonjour. Aujourd’hui, c’est un jour très important. Ah, oui? NARR: Pascale doesn’t seem to realise it’s an important day for Serge. She seems to have forgotten all about his birthday! Serge can’t believe it. He stomps off in a huff. SERGE: Au revoir. Je parts. [SFX: stomping footsteps. Door closes] NARR: After a quick swing on the trees in the jungle to let off steam Serge decides to go back to the tree-house. When he arrives, he finds Pascale standing by a big pile of brightly-wrapped presents. He is delighted. So his friends hadn’t forgotten his birthday after all! SERGE: PASC: Qu-est-ce que c’est? Mes cadeaux? Bon anniversaire, Serge! NARR: Serge counts his parcels. SERGE: Un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit, neuf, dix! Dix cadeaux! C’est super! NARR: Ten presents! And an enormous birthday cake too! SERGE: Et un gateau – je suis très content. © BBC Worldwide Ltd 2006. Page 9 NARR: When all the other presents are opened, Pascale brings out her present for Serge. She wanted to get him a very special present – something that he would really love. PASC: SERGE: Serge. Voici mon cadeau. Merci Pascale. Qu’est-ce que c’est? NARR: It’s a very large package. Serge wonders what it could be. It feels a bit like a picture. When he opens it, he sees that it is a picture! A picture of Pascale. She’s given him an enormous picture of herself! What a strange birthday present! He would have preferred a skateboard, but it’s the thought that counts. So, even though he’s a bit disappointed, Serge does his best to smile and say thank you. PASC: SERGE: Un portrait! De moi. C’est joli, non? Errr, oui. Merci Pascale. NARR: Poor Serge! Never mind – he’s got lots of other presents – and you never know, perhaps he’ll get that skateboard next year! ~~~~TRACK 17 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here’s the last song now. NARR: Did you manage to say all the names? Don’t worry if you didn’t. Once you know all the names, you can try again with your mum or dad, or friend! One of you says the name of one of the items of food, in French of course, and the other one has to point to the right picture. See if you can catch each other out. Wait a minute! SERGE: low muttering – indistinguishable words NARR: Serge and Pascale are talking. They’re talking about what food they like eating and what they don’t like. In French you say ‘J’aime’ for ‘I like’, and ‘I don’t like’ is ‘Je n’aime pas’. You try saying you like bananas. ‘J’aime les bananes’. Great! And now say you don’t like apples. ‘Je n’aime pas les pommes’. Good. Now let’s listen to Serge and pascal. Have you got a pencil? If Serge says he likes one of the foods on page six, put a tick by it. If he says he doesn’t like it, cross the picture out. Let’s try the first one together. PASC: SERGE: Serge.
