US DOD explores multispectral sensor options for V-22

The US military wants to give the BellBoeing V-22 Osprey new eyes and the
ability to target enemies from afar by
installing a multispectral imaging and
targeting sensor system. US Naval Air
Systems Command (NAVAIR) says in a
new sources-sought notice that it is
developing common mechanical and
electrical interfaces that would allow any
V-22 – including the CMV-22B type being
procured by the US Navy – to carry a
gimbaled multispectral sensor.
Those common interfaces will be ready
by June 2017. NAVAIR says there is
enough volume to accommodate a
45.7cm (18in) sensor in the aft cargo
hook well, or potentially a 50.8cm (20in)
unit ―pending detailed engineering
analysis‖. The V-22 programme office is
fleshing out the military’s requirements
for a sensor, and wants to test various
product options on a V-22 aircraft ―later
this year‖.
It will follow up by demonstrating ―up to
four‖ competing sensors solutions in an
operational environment at the Marine
Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron
One (MAWTS-1) tactical demonstration
event in late 2017.
―As the sensors are planned to be
demonstrated on a V-22 aircraft later this
year, a technical readiness level of seven
or higher is required,‖...

En 2014, la base aérienne 279 de
Châteaudun (Eure-et-Loir) devenait un
« Élément Air Rattaché » à celle
d’Orléans. Étant donné sa vocation, il
fut très vite question d’y implanter une
filière industrielle privée de «
déconstruction
»
des
aéronefs
militaires en fin de vie.
Et ce projet fut confié au général de
corps aérien Guy Girier, alors
directeur de la Structure intégrée de
maintien en condition opérationnelle
des matériels aéronautiques de la
défense (SIMMAD). Depuis, fait
extrêmement rare, le général Girier a
démissionné de la SIMMAD, à l’issue
d’un
comité
interministériel
d’investissement « houleux » portant
justement sur la mise en place de
cette filière de déconstruction à
Châteaudun [il a été remplacé par le
général général Philippe Roos, ndlr].
Les raisons de ce départ n’ont pas été
précisées… Mais un référé de la Cour
des comptes sur ce « projet de
gestion des aéronefs retirés du
service de l’État » apporte....

said the E-model has ―probably the
worst‖ readiness rate in the service’s
aviation inventory. An independent
assessment concluded that not
enough attention has been paid to the
heavy-lift type after 13 years of
punishing combat operations in the
Middle East and many CH-53 pilots
haven’t been able to log enough flight
time because their aircraft are
grounded for repairs. In response,
Davis says every CH-53 helicopter will
undergo
100
days
of
heavy
maintenance and the lead aircraft of
that initiative is now flying. It will take
approximately three years…
