mai 2013–No. 220 Guess who is turning 50!! It’s the Jolys Regional Library! The Jolys Regional Library officially opened its main library in St-Pierre-Jolys on April 7, 1963, with a total of 3,500 volumes on its shelves. The first directors were Fernand Lavergne, mayor of the Village of StPierre-Jolys, Fernand Bérard, councillor of the DeSalaberry Municipality, Wilfrid Gosselin from StMalo, Raynald Lavack from Otterburne and Léontine Tessier from St-Pierre-Jolys. Shortly after the opening of the main library, two branch libraries were opened in St-Malo and in Otterburne. The St-Malo Branch , originally located in the Elementary School moved several times but is now back in its original setting. The Otterburne Branch was closed with the closure of the Otterburne School in 1975. The main library in St-Pierre-Jolys has been located in the round gymnasium of the St. Pierre Collegiate since 1975. The school and public libraries are combined, offering its patrons a greater collection of materials. You may have seen it on signs at the vet clinic, heard about it from your friends or even heard it on the radio or seen it on billboards and bus stops lately. Signs saying “Heartworm, is your pet protected?” or even reminders such as “Heartworm prevention starts June first, do you have yours?” can sound daunting at the worst of times or like a sales pitch at others. Signs at that time could be exercise intolerance, difficulty breathing, off color gums, coughing, fainting or other internal signs that may be found on blood work or on x-ray. For this reason, we prefer a PREVENTION program rather than a treatment program. Preventing heartworm can be as simple as giving your dog 1 treat a month for 6 months, during the mosquito season. We hear a lot of reasons at our clinic why pet parents do not think their pet needs protection. Hopefully this helps: Reason 4: Can’t I just treat if they get sick? You can. However, the treatment is very expensive, and hard on the dog. The treatment protocols vary, but most require a few nights stay at a vet clinic, and injections with strong, expensive drugs, that are hard on your pet’s system. It also requires kennel confinement at home for 30 days after each injection to prevent some of the possible side effects. The average 50 pound dog can be on a prevention program yearly, with regular testing for 5-6 years before reaching the cost of 1 treatment regimen! Plus, it’s more fun having your dog beg for a treat once a month, than whine for 30 days straight in a kennel. Reason 1: My dog never eats anything strange Heartworm is in fact a worm, yes, but unlike the intestinal worms such as roundworm or tapeworm, your pet does not get heartworm from eating something. Heartworms live in the heart and blood system, and are spread by mosquitoes. Reason 2: My dog only goes outside to pee It only takes 1 infected mosquito to infect a healthy pet. Reason 3: My dog doesn’t look sick And, hopefully he isn’t. Heartworm can appear as a normal dog until the burden of worms gets too high. Please make a point of discussing heartworm with your veterinarian at your pet’s next visit! That involves the flight, yet some people believe it’s impossible to fly comfortably in coach. Whether you’re starting your holiday or heding home aftera dazzling week in Hawaii, here are some simple steps to make the most of your seat in coach. Board Early—Boarding the plane early means you have more time to settle in and a better chance at storing carry-ons nearby. Many credit cards issued in conjunction with airline loyalty programs offer priority boarding to cardholders. Pack Your Carry on Bag Wisely—The most important way to be comfortable is to have everything you need within easy reach. Those items, on a long, comfortable with low-tempo or ambient music, and your book or e-reader. Choose the Biggest Small Seats—Fact #1: coach seats are small. Fact #2: not all coach seats are the same size. When available, we will gladly seat you in a bulkhead row that, while decreasing foot room, will give you more leg and knee space-a fair trade off for those seeking more comfort. Think Before You Eat—No one is comfortable when they’re flying with too little or too much food in their system. Check ahead to see if there’s a meal on your flight. If not, pack a small, healthy meal to eat whenever you need. If there is a served meal, think about choosing the vegetarian option, which oftentimes is prepared more recently than the standard dinner. Fly at Night—We all try to sleep on long flights, but for some, success is seldom achieved. However, on a night flight, you’re flying at your body’s natural sleep time, increasing the chances of falling fast asleep and arriving at your destination more refreshed and ready to launch into your holiday. The head librarian in St-Pierre-Jolys is Claudette Baldwin, and the librarian at the St-Malo branch is Aline Pilotte. The first librarian was Cécile Bédard, followed shortly after by Alice Bédard who worked from 1963 to 1981. Claudette Baldwin has been head librarian since then. Renée Laroche is presently the school librarian. The services offered by the Regional Library have greatly improved since its opening. At that time, the collection contained books only and of course, a card catalogue! Today a variety of materials , approximately 72,000, are available: DVDs, CDs, electronic books, audio books, as well as a color printer, a photocopier, a scanner and a Dell 1200 MP projector. Patrons can also research and request items from home at http://maplin.gets-it.net. Books are ordered via Interlibrary Loan throughout Manitoba as well as nationally. In St-Pierre, the Story Hour program is offered every Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. The program originally started in 1979 and continues to be very popular. During the summer months, children can also participate in the Summer Reading program for fun, activities and weekly prizes! Watch their reading levels improve! It is of great importance for all citizens to have access to library services. We hope that the library will continue to fulfill the needs of our communities through the cultural, educational, informational and recreational resources that are provided. 18 Hosted by the Rat River Quilting Guild Saturday, May 11, 2013 10 am to 4 pm St-Pierre-Jolys.
