Les Visiteurs du Soir presents ISABELLE HUPPERT SADE READS Juliette and Justine, the vice and the virtue © Peter Lindbergh Texts combined by Raphaël Enthoven Creation January 27, 2013 Centre for fine arts of Bruxelles (Bozar) On tour in 2013-2014 Contact booking - Fabienne Calonier +33 (0)1 44 93 02 02 / [email protected] PRESENTATION "Anti utopia" is the expected word to describe the work of Sade, a dystopia where the murder, the sexual violence, the anthropophagy are praised as long as it enables the powerful to enjoy freely. Isabelle Huppert embodies two iconic figures of the work of Sade: Justine and Juliette, two sisters with opposite fates, one lost by the virtue, the other triumphing through vice. Through them, Raphaël Enthoven questions the embarrassment which presses on the literary production and the message of the sulphurous writer: " I cannot understand the reason why the Marquis de Sade still has reasons to shock us. (…) His praise of the vice and the extravagance of the orgies he describes are not enough to understand the level of disgust which he inspires. The evil comes of farther. Sade is the shadow of the Lights, the dark side of the sun. His immoralism is at first an amoralism. Under the curses of the non-believer against the " divine fancy ", it’s necessary to feel his refusal to believe that the world was made to please us. What’s umbearable with him is the constancy with which he builds a philosophy - and even an ethics on the base of an frosty and inhuman world ". PRESS REVIEWS " Isabelle Huppert reads magnificently extracts of the " Divine Marquis " in front of a full house. " " Here, the French language is best and the texts show that Sade is one of big French prosewriters. " " Isabelle Huppert alternately portrays, rebel or dark, both sisters. She’s perfect. With her, the very classic and former style of Sade sounds light, modern and without dullness. Huppert is a very huge actress ready for all the creative experiences. She still proves it here. But his first book, halfway between the essay and the novel, entitled Un jeu d’enfant – la philosophie, was published at Fayard in 2007. After obtaining of the aggregation, Raphaël Enthoven participated, with Michel Onfray's highly-rated, to the launch of the Popular University of Caen, then contributed to the creation of the Norman Society of Philosophy, before organizing and hosting, from 2004, first at the Bibliothèque François Mitterrand and then at the Théâtre de l'Odéon, about ten meetings a year with philosophers, writers and art historians moved by the oxymoron of Antoine Vitez " the elitism for all ". At the same time, from 2003 to 2006, Raphël Enthoven built an oral library on radio France-Culture within the framework of the broadcast "Comments" (available on CD). The goal was to give the audience an understanding as wide as possible of the classics of the thought. Finally, from 2007 to 2011, while conceiving and hosting the broadcast "Philosophie" on ARTE (since 2008), Raphaël Enthoven produced and hosted Les Nouveaux chemins de la connaissance which proposed from then on to the auditors of France-culture a daily hour of philosophy, history of art and literature. Finally, having participated into the mornings of France-culture (" Le Monde selon Raphaël Enthoven "), he launched a new broadcast in September 2012, entitled Le Gai Savoir –broadcasted each Sunday, between 4 and 5pm. But whether it’s on the radio, on television, in the newspapers or in a classroom, Raphaël Enthoven teaches philosophy. " The philosophy tempts one to teach, he says, as love tempts one to sing." Considering that if the philosophy doesn’t make any progress, one can nevertheless progress studying philosophy, he attempts to show how the experiences of one’s daily life start resonating with the classical texts. Devotee reader of Spinoza, he doesn’t stop walking ont the way which leads to The Ethics, from the absence of hope to the full enjoyment.
