Mr. Rick Mercer - Richard Vincent “Rick” Mercer is one of Canada’s top comedians, television personalities, and
political satirists. Rick Mercer began his career in comedy performing and writing with a series of one-man stage shows,
beginning with Show Me the Button, which debuted at the National Arts Centre in 1990 and went on to tour the country.
Mercer launched his television career in 1993 as one of the creators, performers, and writers on the hit topical weekly
show This Hour Has 22 Minutes, and his spinoff special Talking To Americans was the highest-rated comedy special in the
history of CBC Television, with 2.7 million viewers.
A recipient of well over 25 Gemini Awards for television writing and performance, Mercer was given the Sir Peter
Ustinov Award at the Banff Television Festival, named Journalist of the Year at the Atlantic Journalism Awards, Artists of
the Year from the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council, and has received a number of Canadian Comedy Awards.
He is the sole civilian recipient of the Canadian Armed Forces Commander Land Forces, Command Commendation in
recognition of his support of Canadian peacekeepers, and in 2004 he received the National Arts Centre Award at the
Governor General's Performing Arts Awards. In 2012 Rick was given ACTRA Toronto's 2012 Award of Excellence and
the King Clancy Award from the Canadian Foundation for Physically Disabled Persons. He also received a Diamond
Jubilee Medal in celebration of the Queen's sixty years on the throne. In October 2013 he received the prestigious
Woodrow Wilson Center Award for Public Service.
Mercer has written for Time, Maclean's, The Globe and Mail, and the National Post. His first book, Streeters, hit the top
of the Globe and Mail's best-seller list, and his second book, Rick Mercer Report: The Book, published in the fall of 2007,
also went to the top of the national best-seller list. Rick latest book is A Nation Worth Ranting About that was published
in September, 2012 and became another best-seller.
In 2006 Rick and Belinda Stronach founded the charity Spread the Net, which raises funds to stop the spread of malaria
by providing mosquito nets for African children. Each season the finale of The Rick Mercer Report is the Spread the Net
Student Challenge which has raised now over one million dollars. Other charities he has been active in include Hope Air,
PFLAG, and Toronto's Casey House, a hospital for people living with HIV/AIDS.
He is on the board of The Historica-Dominion Institute, an organization dedicated to promoting the study of Canadian
history, identity and citizenship.
Rick holds Honorary Doctorates from Memorial University, Laurentian University, University of British Columbia,
McMaster University, Bishop's University, Brock University and the University of Guelph.

Rick Mercer fait ses débuts à la télévision en 1993 en tant qu’un des créateurs, interprètes et auteurs de l’émission

En 2006, Rick Mercer et Belinda Stronach fondent l’organisme de bienfaisance Un filet d’espoir, qui réunit des fonds
dans le but de freiner la propagation du paludisme en fournissant des moustiquaires aux enfants africains. Chaque saison
du Rick Mercer Report se termine par le défi étudiant « Un filet d’espoir », dont la recette s’élève à ce jour à plus d’un
million de dollars. Rick Mercer contribue également à d’autres organismes de bienfaisance, dont Vols d’espoir, PFLAG, et

Colonel (Ret’d) Arthur Harcourt Carington “Harky” Smith - Colonel Arthur Harcourt Carington (Harky) Smith was
born in Blackheath, England and educated at Bishop's College School in Lennoxville, Quebec and at Dalhousie University
in Halifax. He began his military career in October 1952 as a naval officer cadet at HMCS SCOTIAN before
transferring to the army in October 1954. After completing basic training in 1955, he was commissioned as a Second
Lieutenant in the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery and posted to 4th Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery,
serving in Camp Utopia, New Brunswick, and Herner, West Germany.
Following his tour in Germany, he completed tours in Shilo Manitoba as an Artillery instructor, and Kingston Ontario, as
Officer-In-Charge of the Canadian Forces Recruiting Centre. In 1963, he was promoted to Captain and posted as a
Troop Commander and Battery Captain in the 1st Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in CFB Gagetown. In 1965
he was posted to 3 Canadian Infantry Brigade Group as a Staff Officer and one year later he returned to the Royal
Canadian School of Artillery as Adjutant. In September 1968 he attended the Canadian Land Forces Command and Staff
College and one year later was posted to the operations staff of 2 Combat Group, CFB Petawawa. He also served a tour
in Viet Nam with the International Commission of Control and Supervision and subsequently was appointed to the Order
of Military Merit.
In July 1973, and upon promotion to Major, he transferred to the Personnel Administration Branch and served as the
Base Services Officer, CFB Petawawa and as Base Administration Officer in Lahr, Germany. After his tour in Lahr he
returned to Ottawa in May 1980 and was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel and appointed Staff Officer to the Chief of
the Defence Staff. In May 1983 he was posted as the Director of Administration at the Royal Military College of
Canada. On 7 June 1986, Colonel Smith was promoted to Colonel and on 17 July 1986, appointed Commandant,
Canadian Forces School of Administration and Logistics. On 28 July 1989 he retired from the Canadian Armed Forces
and joined the Public Service Commission on 1 February 1992 as Special Assistant to the Assistant Deputy Minister
(Policy). He was further promoted to Chief of Staff on 1 May 2003. On 30 April 2013 Colonel Smith retired from the
Department of National Defence after serving for more than 60 years.
He is a serving Director of the Ashbury College Foundation; serving Governor of the Canadian Corps of
Commissionaires; President of the International Commission of Control and Supervision Viet Nam Association; Past
President of the 125th Barrie Combined Division of the St John Ambulance; and former Warden of Christ Church
Cathedral in Ottawa.
He is an Honourary Member of the Royal Military College Club of Canada, the Royal Military College of Canada Band
and the Order of Fellow Logisticians. In April 1989 he was appointed to the Order of St John and on 22 December
1995 received his third clasp to the Canadian Forces Decoration. In 2010 he received the Public Service of Canada
Award for excellence for having served in the Department of National Defence for over 57 years. In October 2011 he
was invested into the prestigious Order of Saint George.
Colonel Smith married the former Mary Lee Thornton of Toronto, Ontario. They have two sons, Gordon, married to
Wendy Kaizer and Christopher, married to Lydia Bugden and they have four grandchildren, Tyler, William, Sydney and
Margaret.

Colonel (ret) Arthur Harcourt Carington « Harky » Smith, MMM, SBStJ, CD - Né à Blackheath, en Angleterre, le
Colonel Arthur Harcourt Carington « Harky » Smith fait ses études à l’Université Bishop’s, à Lennoxville (au Québec), et

à l’état-major des opérations du 2e Groupement de combat, à la BFC Petawawa. Il participe aussi à une mission au ViêtNam pour la Commission internationale de contrôle et de surveillance, après quoi il est reçu à l’Ordre du mérite militaire.
En juillet 1973, il est promu au grade de major et muté à la Branche de l’administration du personnel. Il sert en tant

Ottawa en mai 1980 après sa mission à Lahr, il est promu lieutenant-colonel et reçoit la charge d’officier d’état-major du
chef d’état-major de la Défense. En mai 1983, il est muté au Collège militaire royal du Canada, où il assume les
fonctions de directeur de l’administration. Le 7 juin 1986, il est promu au grade de colonel, et le 17 juillet 1986, il est
nommé commandant de l’École d’administration et de logistique des Forces canadiennes. Le 28 juillet 1989, il prend sa
retraite des Forces armées canadiennes. Le 1er février 1992, il entre à la Commission de la fonction publique à titre
d’adjoint spécial du sous-ministre adjoint (Politiques). Il est ensuite promu chef d’état-major le 1er mai 2003. Le 30 avril
2013, le colonel Smith prend sa retraite du ministère de la Défense nationale, à l’issue d’une carrière de plus de 60 ans.
Il est actuellement directeur de la fondation du Collège Ashbury; gouverneur du
Corps canadien des commissionnaires; et président de l’association de la Commission internationale de contrôle et de
surveillance pour le Vietnam. Il est également ancien président de la 125e Division mixte de l’Ambulance Saint-Jean
Barrie; et ancien marguillier de la Cathédrale Christ Church à Ottawa.
Il est en outre membre honoraire du Club des Collèges militaires royaux du Canada, de la Musique du Collège militaire
royal du Canada et de l’Ordre des compagnons logisticiens. En avril 1989, il a été reçu à l’Ordre de Saint-Jean, et le 22
décembre 1995, il s’est vu décerner sa troisième agrafe de la Décoration des Forces canadiennes. En 2010, il a reçu le
Prix d’excellence de la Fonction publique du Canada pour avoir travaillé pour le ministère de la Défense nationale durant
plus de 57 ans, et en octobre 2011, il a été intronisé au prestigieux Ordre de Saint Georges.
