Translated by the author. Szapocznikow’s intention to raise her objects physically and metaphorically above the floor is evident throughout her œuvre. Until the last years of her life, she emphasized verticality in her drawings, but in her final cycle of works, that verticality is dramatically surrendered to flatness and, ultimately, to the transcendental essence of weightlessness2. In a drawing from the series Paysage humain (Human Landscape, 1971), the composition stretches across the surface of the sheet, her title indicating the expansive scope of this new direction3. In previous years, she had described her biological forms and disjointed figures on paper; now she appeared to be creating scenes for them—the incongruous settings of Salvador Dalí come to mind, as do the organic pastiches of Arshile Gorky. Szapocznikow enhanced the dreamy realm of the Human Landscape drawings with heavily diluted washes of green, pink, grey, and blue watercolor that are more Pop than Surrealist, recalling the loose washes in Claes Oldenburg’s drawings of the 1960s4. While Szapocznikow’s use of color had previously been largely descriptive, her images were now bathed in it. Szapocznikow’s full repertory of forms appears in this series, rearranged and conflated into a fantastical cast: lumps converge with vaginas, lips rest on disjointed legs, eyes peer through the horizon, a female figure drifts onto a phallus. At times, the erotic tension is condensed in the vividness of the medium, like the patches of pale pink in a number of untitled drawings from the Human Landscape series; the palpability of flesh is instantly felt. She might have looked at Auguste Rodin’s watercolors of female nudes on one of her frequent visits to the Musée Rodin. In drawings like Recling Woman (1900-06), Rodin exploited the transparency and allusive quality of the washes, his figures afloat on the sheet. Confronting her impending death, Szapocznikow created her own transporting scenes, like intimate passages into the afterlife. Szapocznikow’s final sculptures can also be considered “human” landscapes. In the Herbarium series (1971-72), casts taken from her own body and that of her son were crushed and laid flat like flayed skins in what was the artist’s most visceral attempt to make the impermanent permanent. The title refers to the tradition of perserving plant specimens by pressing them in books. Szapocznikow’s imprinted layers of polyester resin certainly allude to death, yet flattening the casts somehow makes them more lifelike than death masks5. They beg the question, asked by Georges Didi-Huberman, “Does the process of imprinting induce contact with the origin or loss of the origin?6” Do they invoke the presence of the absence of the subject? The Herbarium cycle is an eerie evocation of both. As Szapocznikow’s memento mori, they along with the Human Landscape series, are material reminders of the evanescence of the human body. Her stated aim was ultimately “to exalt the ephemeral in the folds of our body, in the trace of our passage.7” Draftmanship served as an immediate and primal mode of artistic production for Szapocznikow. She drew on any available surface, as her son Piotr later recalled, even on a packet of cigarettes8. Ideas born on paper were reconfigured in consecutive compositions; endless possibilities evolved from a single theme. Some developed into three-dimensional form, while others existed purely on the tow-dimensional picture plane. Occasionally, a drawing took its cue from a sculpture, but all affirmed the artist’s presence within the trace of her gesture. The calligraphic marks of her hand in the drawings correpond to the casts she took of her body. They reflect Szapocznikow’s need to exist through her work, like the “absurd and convulsive mania [that] proves the existence of an unknown, secret gland, necessary for life9” she refers to in her 1972 credo. While colour had rarely been convoked within her graphic experience, her very last drawings were to explore the possibilities offered by watercolours. Under the title of Paysages humains (1971), these compositions made use of the effects of transparency and the evocative power of colours to the full. Allegra Pesenti notes that the hints of pink colour “make the flesh palpable”, thus increasing their erotic tension in some cases. Reclining figures in a state of weightlessness practise gliding across the white of the paper; sometimes, strangely interwoven bodies allude to generation and fertilisation; other situations develop the theme of hidebound enclosure in a more dramatic mode, lending themselves to multiple interpretations, including the most contradictory ones. Alina Szapocznikow has exorcised her obsession with haunting absence, which has always constituted one of the main axes of her work, through bodies softened by greens, tender pinks and light greys that envelope the forms with a luminous vibration. She once again strives to capture a spark of life in these watercolours that give a human complexion to formal amputations; to figures given over to landscapes that are as barren as Limbo; to the oval forms of caves, in which disarticulated characters assemble. Once again, her drawing attempts to elicit a song about the fate of threatened bodies in time and space, which imperceptibly haunts the most confident of gazes. With a new sense of ease gained from the choice of watercolours, she imagines light figures that a breath could alter, and that a stronger breath would annihilate. It is as though the forms had to be no more than apparitions, that is, a presence, however meagre it may be. Anna Zakiewicz, « On Alina Szapocznikow’s Drawings », Capturing Life, Alina Szapocznikow - Drawings and sculptures, IRSA, 2004 Alina Szapocznikow is remembered mainly as a sculptress, but one cannot ignore this much less conspicuous, though extremely important part of her artistic activity that is, her drawings. Particularly that in the last year of her life, it was the latter that were appreciated by a group of the most outstanding 20th century artists, namely Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Antonio Tapiés and Pierre Alechinsky who awarded Szapocznikow a prize for her collection of drawings from the year 1970, entitled Human Landscape [Paysage humain], at the III International Drawing Exhibition in Moderna Galerija in Rijeka (Croatia). The above cycle, executed in pencil, ink and watercolour presents landscapes with certain elements of human figures inscribed into them - legs, hands, mouths and torsos. Moreover, the above landscapes pulsate with organic forms which are packed into them likewise muscles in the human body, whereas the long hair of the human figures appearing here and there, seems to merge smoothly with the line of the horizon. When looking at them, we seem to ask ourselves, whether they are still human figures or maybe already landscapes, or maybe the other way around? L’œuvre est représentée par la galerie Loevenbruck, Paris, France et Andrea Rosen Gallery, New York, USA. / The work is represented by Loevenbruck gallery, Paris, France and Andrea Rosen Gallery, New York, USA. / As a sculptor who began working in the post-war period in a rather classical, figurative manner, Szapocznikow’s rapid development towards a conception of sculpture as an imprint not only of memory but of her own body left behind a legacy of provocative objects – at once sexualized, fragmented, vulnerable, humorous, and political – that still sit between Surrealism, Nouveau Réalisme, and Pop Art. Her tinted polyester casts of her lips and breasts transformed into quotidian objects like lamps or ashtrays, her poured polyurethane forms, and her construction of sculptures that incorporate photographs remain as remarkably idiosyncratic and contemporary today as they were when they were first made.
