Shanghai dans les années 30. Hui Man-keung, membre du Guomindang, parti nationaliste, a été capturé avec ses compagnons par les Japonais. Il parvient à s'échapper et s'échoue sur une plage de Shanghai,
avec une seule idée en tête, se venger. Ding Lik travaille comme
éboueur, pour une mafia locale dont il rêve de prendre la tête. Il est
amoureux de Ching-ching, la fille de Fung, l'un des patrons de cette
mafia. Le destin de ces personnages va se croiser dans cette ville de
Shanghai si remarquablement bien reconstituée et filmée avec une
esthétique parfaite.
Film dramatique et romanesque, Shanghai Grand, dernier film produit
par Tsui Hark avant la rétrocession de Hong Kong à la Chine,
est inspiré d'une série télévisée à succès.
Les deux grandes stars hong-kongaises de l'époque : Andy Lau et Leslie
Cheung s'y retrouvent après Nos Années sauvages. Leur interprétation
magistrale porte le film.

We are in Shanghai in the 30ies. Hui Man-keung, a member of national party Guomindang, was caught by the Japanese, with his comrades. He manages to escape and ends up on a Shanghai beach. All he
can think about is to get his revenge. Ding Lik is the garbage man of a
local mafia which he dreams to run. He is in love with Ching-ching,
the daughter of Fung, one of the dons of this mafia. All the characters’
fate gets intertwined in the city of Shanghai so well reconstituted and
shot with such perfect sense of aesthetics.
Both an action film and a fiction, Shanghai Grand was inspired by a
successful TV serial; it is Tsui Hark’s last production before Hong
Kong retrocession to China.
The two Hong Kong big stars of the time Andy Lau and Leslie Cheung
are playing together again after “Days of Being Wild”. The film is served by heir stunning acting.
