Including music, singing, and dancing, it is a supererogatory liturgy which is practised by a number of Moroccan groups of Tasawwuf (Sufism), such as the Aïssawa, the Hammadcha and the Touhama (1). Haddarat is the name for women who practise the Hadra, and who follow the spiritual and musical guidance of a woman leader, known as the ma’alema. The examples of Hadra presented in this CD were recorded is Fez, and are played by three groups of Haddarat. The first group, directed by Hassaniya Rahali, is composed of residents of Fez who originally came from the south of Morocco (Tafilalet and Hawz of Marrakesh); one of the seven women is of Iraqi origin. The group directed by Lalla Moulati is composed of women from Fez, as is the group led by Lalla Batul Lyoubi, although the latter is herself of Saudi Arabian origin. Instruments and Musical Forms In traditional Moroccan musical culture, gender differences are reflected in the way musical instruments are used. Like most women’s groups, the Haddarat of Fez accompany themselves only with percussion instruments, involving both skin and metal vibrating surfaces. The general name for percussion instruments is duzan. These include: the bendir, a circular frame drum with one skin-covered surface; the thilat, a pair of small skins stretched over a body made of wood or pottery; the tarr or tryar, a small tambourine with cymbals on a circular frame; the derabuka, the classical Arab pottery drum shaped like a chalice; the ta’arija, a tambourine with a tapered gobelet shape; the gwal, similar to the derabuka, but with snares of gut under the skin; and the hanqa, or finger cymbals. The first piece is in 5/4 time (3+2), with superimposed rhythms. Its form is that of the Tahdira Soussiya (2), an ancient court music of the Dar el Makhzen, influenced by Berber and Saharan rhythms of the Souss region, and by the Hadra of the Sidi Rahal brotherhood of the Marrakesh area. The metric form of the verse is known as ‘Aroubi, a - 16 - dialect version of the classical name Roub’ai, for couplets of four verses. Thes quatrains are sung by two choirs which alternate in call and response. The Tahdira is usually dedicated to the woman who is the focal point of the festival, the ‘arousa (wife) or the nafiysa (mother who has given birth), but also to an occasional male figure, such as a newborn son (maouloud), a boy who is undergoing circumcision (thâra), or a husband (‘arys). The second and third pieces are in 4/4 time (3+1), alternating or superimposed on measures in 6/8. They are based on the Qasida, a form from classical Arab music which is derived from the single-rhymed poetry of camel drivers of pre-Islamic Arabia. The Moroccan Qasida (Qsida) is not as rigorously constructed as the classical Qasida, and has become a form of popular song through the intermediary of the Malhûn . The fifth piece is a lyrical form of popular song, called Cha’abi, played over a Tahdira rhythm. The song’s theme is one of social importance, such as emigration. El Babor is the steamship which carried North African emigrants across the Mediterranean. This mixture of profane and religious genres is the source of the development of modern popular song.(3) The last piece, in the Qasida rhythm, is introduced by a Mawwâl, a vocal solo in free rhythm, full of melismatic embroidery. It is sung by Lalla Batul Lyoubi. This classical opening is followed by a mixture of religious and secular forms, as in the preceding song, El Babor. The melody and rhythm of this «Qasida Sidi Rasullah» come from the sacred tradition, whereas the theme and lyrics are borrowed from the modern songs of the Sheikhat, particularly of Hajja Hamdawiya. Women and Sufism The Hadra of the women of Fez is the principal practice of their Sufi sorority, performed for occasions of powerful moments in the lives of women, both as mothers and as wives. Both a religious practice and a path of learning, the musical knowledge of the Haddarat is expressed through a special attitude of mind and heart (Niya ), which enables them to sing of both sacred and worldly love as means of attaining the Divine. The role played by women of sororities such as the Haddarat shows their - 17 - ability to hold their own and to fulfill themselves, beyond the limitations of Islamic scripturalist dogma, and the stereotyped image Westerners have of Arab women. Such a woman may become a spiritual leader (sheikh ) who is able to bring her disciple (murid ) into knowledge and wisdom through mystical love and erotic art. The ambivalence of feminine archetypes in Morocco, such as ‘Aisha Qandisha (the prostititute-sorceress of local pre-Islamic tradition), as well as ‘Aisha, Mother of Believers (the last wife of the Prophet, an Islamic feminine symbol), demonstrate the contrast between the pagan image of woman in nature, and that of woman in Islamic culture. This opposition also recurs within Sufi tradition.(4) Antonio Baldassarre (Translated by Joseph Rowe) 1 Hadra (H a dh r ah); verb : Hadàra (H a dh a r a), «to be; to be present; to be in the presence of»; noun : Hâdir (H â dh i r), «witness, someone who is present»; compound verb : Istihdar (Isti h dh a r),»to evoke, to recall». Another possible etymology : Hadr (H a dh r), «incite» and «inciting». In the Moroccan dialect of Arabic (darija) the phoneme / dh / (interdental fricative), corresponding to the fifteenth letter [dha] of the alphabet, and the phoneme / d / (occlusive-dental), corresponding to the eighth letter of the alphabet [dal], are not distinct phonemes, but allophones. Hence there is another possible origin of Hadara (H a d a r a), «to bring down or descend». These etymologies are directly linked to the symbolism and phenomenology of ecstatic possession cults, as evidenced in the practice of hadra. 2 T a h dh i r, «preparation, confection», verb: h a ddh a r a, «to prepare, to make confections», whence the more plausible etymology of the word Haddarat «Women who prepare» (the Hadra). 3 Concerning the «lineage» relationship which links «feminine» song (religious song in the ritual of Hadra, ceremonial song in rites of passage such as birth and marriage, entertainment songs of the Sheikhat ) to the recent phenomenon of Raï music, cf. Marie Virolle, «Le chant Raï», Karthala, Paris 1997. 4 On this subject, see °Abdessamad Dialmy, «Féminisme Soufi», Afrique-Orient, Casablanca 1991. - 18 - Hassania Rahali 1- Salatu Annabi (Prayer to the Prophet) God be with you, Prophet, You who heal us, Messenger of God, God, God be with you, Guide, You who have healed us, Beloved of God.
