The Secretariat ofthe United Nations presents its compliments to the
Permanent Missions of Me rbcr States and Observers to the Uni ted Nations and has the
honour to invite them to no inate qualified candidates for the Standby Team of Senior
Mediation Advisers of the epartment of Political Affairs.
The Department of P litical Affairs maintains a Mediation Support Unit (MSU) as
part of the Policy and Medi tion Division. Its services are today recognised as essential
professional resources to su port the good offices and mediation efforts of United Nations
representatives and envoys, and those of partners ill regional and sub-regional

A flagship ofDPA's ediation support efforts is the Standby Team of Senior
Mediation Advisers (SBT), hieh provides DrA the ability to deploy experts rapidly to
work with mediation teams hat need support in designing and facilitating mediation
processes, or addressing th uatie issues that "rise in peace talks.
Standby Team rnemb rs are engaged on a full-time basis with DPA, and deploy on
short notice to the field in s pport of on-going good offices and mediation work. Between
deployments, they carry ou research and analysis on mediation issues.
DPA, in partnership ith the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS),
has now launched the recruitment process for the 2017 Standby Team of Senior Mediation
Advisers, and is seeking th nomination of candidates who can provide the required
assistance for a period of 01 c year (starting 22 February 2016). The Standby Team will he
composed of advisers in the following thematic areas: (1) constitution-making; (2) powersharing; (3) gender and lncl ision; (4) security arrangements (cease-fires, DDR & SSR);
and (5) conduct and design I'mediation, facilitation and dialogue. The Secretariat
particularly encourages the omination of women, and French and/or Arabic speakers,

The principal operational role of the Standb Team Isto provide
expert advrce to senior UN otnctats or ot er partners, upon
request, either by deplovlng to the field or y providing advice
remotely. This support Is flexible and i;lU· pted to the needs
of the srruatton. It can include: providing echnical expertise
in e specific area; giving advice on Pr'"oc dural end agenda
setting Issues; provtdtng analysis of the po mons of parnas In
nego~a~ons, including the identificatlon f potential points
of convergence as well os possible ~.aps; rafting the text of
agreements; le~~lng workshop, tor partie on substantive or
process issues; and providing spadalkad mediation training
and coaching.
Team members are experIenced in mediation situaticns and
experts in a range of issues that arise ft@quently ll'l peace
negotiations. including the overall deslgn 01processes, security
arrangements (ceLl::;cftre:;/DDR/S$R), co stitutional Issues,
power-sharing, natural resources, and ge der and mcluston.
When not deployed in the field, the memb "of lh. 'learn 0'0

The UN Department of Pulit cal Affairs, through Its Policy and Mediation DIVision, malntalns a
Mediation Support Unit (M U) which provides support to senior UN envoys and partners
engaged in msdlctlcn and eacernaking efforts, and serves as a repository for expertise and
knowledge in this field. The Standby Team of Senior Medi,tion Advisers, managed by MSU,
consists of full-time experie cod mediation practitioners who can be deployed within 72 hours
to support the conflict prev ntlon, good offices, and mediation efforts of senior envoys and
representatives of the UN an its partners.
DPA's goal is to establish a t am of advisers with significant mediation experience and a wide
range of regional knowledge technical skills and language abilities. All applicants are expected
to have 'orne mediation pro ess deslgn skills, and are exppeted to demonstrate competence in
mainstreaming gandsr into t eir work, Women are particularly encouraged to apply, Speakers
of Arabic and/or Fren~h are a so strongly encouraged to apply.
Interviews with short-listed candidates will take place In late October 2016. The exact
composition or the team will be defined depending on the requirements of the United Nations
at the time of recruitment.
