Northern Region Director:
My name is Phillip Tanner and I currently live in Cottonwood, Arizona and work as an Assistant
Clinical Professor in the School Psychology Program at Northern Arizona University in
Flagstaff. I also perform school psychological services at Mingus Union High School in
Cottonwood on a contract basis. I received my Ph.D. from Northern Arizona University and have
a Masters degree in School Guidance Counseling. I thoroughly enjoy working in both the
university and the public school setting and consider myself lucky to have the opportunity to
work in both environments. I would be honored to serve as one of the Northern Region Directors
of AASP and am excited about the prospect of working with so many talented professionals
across the state. I have served as an interim regional director for the last several months and
believe I can be an effective member of the team.
My motivation to work with children, families, and educational professionals stems from my
family. I am married with two children. My son’s name is Justin. He is currently in the 5th grade
and is 11 years old. My daughter’s name is Suzie. She is currently in the 3rd grade and is 8 years
old. I spend much of my free time coaching my children’s sports teams. My son plays baseball,
basketball, and soccer. My daughter enjoys playing soccer and attends dance class a few times
per week (I am not much of a dancer, so I leave those activities to the professionals…). My wife,
Mary, works in an elementary school as a sign language interpreter. She currently works with
two third grade students who have severe hearing loss and utilize sign language as their primary
form of communication.
