CONTROVENTO
est la naturelle évolution artistique du « Luca Pagano Quintet »,
formation issue d’une carte blanche que le guitariste Luca Pagano a reçue par l’AMR
en 2007.
En 2012 le nom de la formation est modifié en CONTROVENTO pour mieux refléter un
travail artistique partagé la participation de Brooks Giger, Reto Suhner et Dominic Egli.
Un travail centré sur la communication entres divers musiciens pour faire avancer un
langage commun tout en respectant et en laissant la place à la personnalité et aux
influences de chacun. C’est pourquoi le répertoire d’aujourd’hui a bien évolué. Chaque
musicien est maintenant à tour de rôle aussi compositeur pour le quartet.
Depuis quelques années cette formation travaille avec des musiciens suisses qui
viennent de différents cantons. Cela apporte une réelle contribution au niveau
artistique car la diversité des origines et des expériences vient enrichir le parcours de
CONTROVENTO.
En effet si Luca Pagano est d’origine tessinoise mais vit à Genève depuis trente
années, Brooks Giger est un genevois d'adoption mais d'origine bernoise.
Le saxophoniste appenzellois Reto Suhner vit actuellement à Zürich et le batteur
zurichois Dominic Egli vit lui à Lausanne. Vive la Suisse !
L’évolution du la musique de cette formation a été très importante et pour le groupe il
est maintenant important d’avoir une nouvelle trace sur CD du travail artistique actuel.
Le choix du Live a été fait pour rester le plus proche possible du son de la formation.
Nous avons donc utilisé deux festivals au printemps 2015 pour produire la galette.
Le premier concert a été enregistré par la RTS/Espace 2 le 25 mars 2015 lors du
Festival de Jazz de l'AMR de Genève.
Le deuxième concert a été enregistré par le studio Stepa-Sound le 16 avril 2015 au
Festival Jazz "Jazz in Bess" à Lugano organisé pour les dix années du club de Jazzy
Jams.
Nous avons choisi Le label suisse Unit Records pour promouvoir notre CD. Un label
qui représente bien notre musique.

CONTROVENTO biographies:

Né en 1962 au Tessin, Luca Pagano qui vit à Genève, commence la guitare en
autodidacte à l'âge de 10 ans. De 1985 à 1995 il participe aux ateliers de l'AMR
association dont il devient ensuite professeur. ll enseigne et a enseigné la guitare en
privé et auprès de différentes écoles de la Suisse Romande: Espace Musical, AMR,
EPI, ERA, Conservatoire de l’Ouest Vaudois.
Fondateur de La Bande à Milou (1995 - 2000) un quartet axé sur les chefs-d'œuvre de
la chanson française revisités par le groupe au goût du jazz (une centaine de concerts
en Suisse et en France ainsi que l'enregistrement d'un CD).
En 2002 il participe à la création et à l’enregistrement de la « partition Instantanée »
avec Olivier Magnenat, Marie Schwab et Gabriel Zuffrey.
En 2003 il crée « Direzione Sud », une formation avec orgue Hammond dans laquelle
il partage le travail de composition avec Maurice Magnoni. Tournées internationales en
2003 et 2005. Un Cd « Estrella del Norte » en 2003 pour le jazz Label Altri-Suoni qui
reçoit des hommages par les meilleures revues spécialisés (JazzHot, JazzMan,
JazzHit, Musica Jazz, Jazz’n’More etc.). Concerts en direct pour la Radio Suisse
Romande, festivals et plus de 50 concerts en Europe émission de télévision en
Albanie, stages et représentations dans les écoles. En 2005 le groupe a été
sélectionné pour Suisse Diagonales Jazz.
En novembre 2007 il forme le Luca Pagano Quintet, une nouvelle formation issue
d'une carte blanche reçue par l'AMR de Genève. Le CD "Sotto il grande ulivo" est sorti
en 2009.

Luca Pagano s’est produit à l’occasion de festivals et concerts comme: Berne,
Bergame, Schaffhouse, Bérat, Rome, AMR/Genève, Agrigento, Lausanne, Bitonto,
Lugano, Milan, Ostuni, Terlizzi et Zürich.
Ses compagnons de route sont des musiciens comme: Matthieu Michel, Gregoire
Maret, Reto Shuner, Jérôme Regard, Francis Varis, , Maurice Magnoni, John Aram,
Maurizio Bionda, Marcel Papaux, Hilaria Kramer, Ernie Odom, Ivor Malherbe, Danilo
Moccia, Philippe Genevay, Yves Massy, François Chevrolet, Claude Tabarini, Jerémy
Bruyère, Gabriel Zuffrey, Martin Wisard, Santo Sgrò, Andreas Fulgosi, Dominic Egli et

The saxophonist Reto Suhner performs in different Swiss and international formations,
from Duo to Jazz orchestra. The unplannable moment of musical dialogue, which is
based on improvisation, is important to Suhner. That’s where suspense is created,
where new sounds evolve and stories are told.
Reto Suhner, born in Herisau, graduated from the Jazz School, where he studied with
Carlo Schöb and Lester Menezes. Additionally, he took workshops with Jerry Bergonzi,
Art Lande, Ed Neumeister, Bela Lakatos and Julio Barreto – in 1999 he stayed in New
York and took private classes with Dick Oatts, Billy Drewes, Rich Perry and Bob Mover.
In 1998 and 2007 Suhner received the culture award of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. He
gave concerts with Fabian M. Müller, Mats-Up, the Zurich Jazz Orchestra, Swiss Jazz
Orchestra, Lauer Large, Martin Streule Jazz Orchestra, Adrian Frey Septet, Herbie
Kopf’s U.F.O. and SWILIT, Pius Baschnagel’s Influences, Max Frankl Quartet and
Béatrice Graf.
The Reto Suhner Quartet has been giving concerts for 14 years nationally and
internationally and has meanwhile recorded 6 CDs. We have made a live-recording in
October 2013 at the Bird’s Eye, which has been released by Live-Life!
The Reto Suhner Nonet was founded during an “Artist-in-Residence”-series at the
Moods (Zurich). The formation has recorded their debut album in August 2012.
The Fabian M. Müller/Reto Suhner Duo exists since 2010.

A suivi les cours de contrebasse au conservatoire populaire
de musique de Genève sous l’enseignement d’ Olivier Magnenat.
A aussi étudié avec Mirella Vedeva-Ruaux et Alain Ruaux, continue actuellement sa
formation musicale avec Patrice Moret.
Il a joué avec diverses formations et musiciens de la scène genevoise dans les
domaines du jazz et de la musique improvisée:
