Chers Membres,
Février est un mois de célébration : Notre chandeleur aura lieu le 19, à
partir de 16 H. à l’église Westminster sur Northshore Dr. Cette année, en
plus du talent culinaire de nos chefs crêpiers locaux, nous aurons l’occasion
de goûter la véritable spécialité bretonne grâce à Ariane, Michael et sans
doute aussi Sébastien, voisin normand, qui nous a déjà préparé une
délicieuse galette des rois. J’ai d’ailleurs promis à Ariane une compétition de
dégustation… À vos poêles donc, nous devons relever le défi de la meilleure
crêpe Knoxvillienne! Février nous apporte aussi l’occasion de rêver au
Mardi Gras et au Carnaval (voir les sites du mois en page 5) en pensant à
Nice, àVenise ou à Rio. Et puis il y a bien sûr la célèbre fête des amoureux,
la St Valentin, une belle tradition française devenue aujourd’hui
internationale.
Quant au mois dernier, nous avons commencé l’année sous les meilleurs
auspices en célébrant les rois ( notre roi de l’année s’appelle Michael et il
porte de beaux chapeaux ronds). Une bonne quarantaine de convives était
réunie pour l’occasion. Nous avons fait la connaissance de nombreux
nouveaux visages sympathiques que nous accueillons chaleureusement au
sein de notre groupe. Laurent
Dear members,
February is a month of celebration: Our Candlemas will take place on the
19th, starting at 4 p.m. at Westminster church on Northshore Dr. This year,
in addition to culinary goodies prepared by our local crêpe chefs, we will
have the chance to taste a true Breton specialty thanks to Ariane, Michael
and of course Sébastien as well, Norman neighbor, who has already
prepared delicious pancakes for us. Besides, I have promised Ariane a
tasting competition…So, let’s start cooking, we must raise the challenge for
the best Knoxville crêpe ! February also gives us the chance to dream about
Mardi Gras and the Carnival (check out the web sites of the month on page
5) thinking about Nice, Venise, and about Rio. Of course, let’s not forget
Valentine’s day or the lovers holiday, a beautiful French tradition which has
now became international.
As for last month, we started the year off right by celebrating the kings (this
year’s king was Michael and he wore the crown well). A good forty or so
guests were present for this festive occasion. We met several new and nice
faces that we warmly welcome to be part of our group. Laurent

France-Allemagne :
regards croisés des jeunes
Le 15 janvier 2003 – Réalisée pour l’OFAJ
(Office franco-allemand pour la jeunesse) à
l’occasion de son 40ème anniversaire, notre étude
analyse
les
perceptions
réciproques
qu’entretiennent les jeunes Français et les jeunes
Allemands sur leur pays voisin respectif.
Représentations, connaissances linguistiques,
voyages, connaissances culturelles, modes de vie,
tels sont les principaux thèmes abordés par cette
étude. Principal enseignement : 81% des
Allemands et 95% des Français estiment que les
relations franco-allemandes sont bonnes ou plutôt
bonnes.
L’évolution de l'image de son propre pays
jugée favorablement
Plus d'un Français sur deux estime que l'image de
la France auprès des Allemands a favorablement
évolué au cours des dernières années (53%).
Selon 34% des Allemands, l'image de
l'Allemagne auprès des Français s'est améliorée.
Même si la proportion de ceux qui, dans les deux
pays, estiment qu'il y a eu une évolution
favorable est nettement supérieure à celle de ceux
qui perçoivent une évolution défavorable, les
jeunes Français semblent globalement plus sûrs
d'eux-mêmes que les Allemands.

France-Germany: As Seen by Young
People
January 15, 2003- Conducted by the OFAJ
(Office Franco-Allemand pour la Jeunesse) on the
occasion of its 40th anniversary, our study
analyzes mutual perceptions that young French
people and young German people have about
their
respective
neighboring
country.
Representations, linguistic knowledge, travels,
cultural knowledge, lifestyles, these are the main
themes dealt with in this study. Main result: 81 %
of Germans and 95 % of French people feel that
French-German relations are good or fairly good.
Evolution of the Image of one’s own country
judged favorably
More than half of French people feel that the
image of France in the eyes of Germans has
favorably evolved during the course of the last
few years (53%). According to 34% of Germans,
the image of Germany in the eyes of French
people has also improved. Even if the proportion
of those who, in both countries, feel as if there
has been a favorable evolution is clearly superior
to the proportion of those who feel as if there has
been a unfavorable evolution, young French
people seem as a whole more sure of themselves
than their German counterparts.

L’Histoire de la Saint-Valentin
Autrefois, les amoureux devaient fabriquer euxmêmes leur carte et composer leur déclaration
d'amour. Tout cela se faisait dans l'anonymat... Au
Moyen Âge, on appelait "valentin" le cavalier que
chaque fille choisissait pour l'accompagner lors de
sorties. Le cavalier devait faire un cadeau à la fille.
C'est aussi le 14 février que les jeunes filles
essayaient de deviner comment serait leur futur
mari. Pour cela, elles regardaient les oiseaux: si
elles voyaient un rouge-gorge, elles se marieraient
avec un marin, un moineau signifiait un mariage
heureux, mais avec un homme peu fortuné, tandis
qu'un chardonneret indiquait un mariage avec un
homme riche.
En ce qui concerne l'identité de saint Valentin, les
historiens ne sont pas en accord. Au total, sept
saints chrétiens prénommés Valentin sont fêtés le
14 février! Lequel est à l'origine de cette fête?
Mystère!
La plupart des historiens croient que la SaintValentin est associée aux Lupercales romaines.
Les lupercales étaient des fêtes annuelles célébrées
le 15 février en l’honneur de Lupercus, le dieu des
troupeaux et des bergers. Ces fêtes marquaient le
jour du printemps dans l’ancienne Rome. Pour
cette occasion, on organisait une sorte de loterie de
l'amour. Cela consistait à tirer au hasard le nom
des filles et des garçons inscrits, de façon à former
des couples qui sortiraient ensemble tout le reste
de l'année! Ouf! Un an, c'est long! J'espère que le
hasard faisait bien les choses… De nos jours, un
amoureux se doit d'offrir un petit mot doux, des
fleurs ou du chocolat à sa préférée, lors de la
Saint-Valentin... Bonne Saint-Valentin à tous.

History of Valentine’s Day
In the past, lovers had to make their own cards
And write their own declaration of love. This
was all done anonymously…In the Middle
Ages, a “Valentine” was the knight that each
girl chose to accompany her during parties.
The knight had to give a gift to the girl. It’s
also on February 14 that the young girls tried
to guess what their future husband would be.
In order to do this, they watched birds: if they
saw a robin, they would marry a sailor, a
sparrow signified a happy marriage, but with a
man who was not very fortunate, while a
goldfinch indicated a marriage with a rich
man.
As far as the identity of St. Valentin is
concerned, historians are not in agreement. In
total, seven Christian saints named Valentine
are celebrated on February 14. Which one is
the origin of this holiday? That is a mystery!
Most historians believe that St. Valentine is
associated
with
Roman
Lupercales.
Lupercales were annual festivals celebrated
February 15 in honor of Lupercus, the god of
herds and shepards. These festivals marked
the first day of spring in old Rome. For this
occasion, a kind of love lottery was organized.
It consisted of pulling out at random the name
of registered girls and boys, in order to form
couples who went out together for the rest of
the year. Wow, a year is a long time! I hope
that chance worked well…
Today, a lover must offer kind words, flowers,
or chocolate to his beloved during Valentine’s
Day. Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone.

Cajun Chicken Wings
Ailes de Poulet Cajun
Ingrédients:
1 kg (2 1/8 lbs) d'ailes de poulet
2 tasses (300 g) de chapelure
2 c.à thé (6 g) d'origan
1 c.à thé (3 g) de basilic
1 c.à thé (5 g) de sel
1 c.à thé (3 g) de piments forts, en poudre
1/2 c.à thé (1,5 g) de poudre d'oignon
1/2 c.à thé (1,5 g) de paprika
1/2 c.à thé (1,5 g) de poivre de Cayenne
1/4 c.à thé (0,5 g) de poivre noir
1/4 c.à thé (0,5 g) de poivre blanc
2 oeufs
1/4 tasse (65 mL) de lait
1/2 tasse (90 g) de farine
4 tasses (1 L) d'huile
Méthode:
1. Chauffer l'huile à 375°F (190°C).
2. Couper le bout des ailes puis les laver. Éponger
avec un essuie-tout.
3. Dans un bol, mélanger la chapelure et les épices.
Les mettre de côté.
4. Battre les oeufs dans le lait. Les mettre de côté.
5. Mettre la farine dans un autre bol.
6. En travaillant rapidement, rouler chaque aile dans
la farine, plonger dans le mélange d'oeufs et de lait et
les enrober de chapelure assaisonnée.
7. Frire quelques ailes à la fois, pendant 10 à 12
minutes.
8. Conserver les ailes au chaud dans le four, pendant
que cuisent les autres.
9. Servir chaud, accompagnées d'une sauce piquante.
Ingrédients:

2 teaspoons (6 g) of oregano
1 teaspoon (3 g) of basil
1 teaspoon (5 g) of salt
1 teaspoon (3 g) of strong peppers, in powder
½ teaspoon (1.5 g) of onion powder
½ teaspoon (1.5 g) of paprika
½ teaspoon (1.5 g) of Cayenne pepper
¼ teaspoon (.5 g) of black pepper
¼ teaspoon (.5 g) of white pepper
2 eggs
¼ cup (65 ml) of milk
½ cup (90 g) of flour
4 cups (1 L) of oil
Preparation:
Heat the oil at 375 F (190 C).
Cut the end of the wings, then wash them. Wipe
them with a kitchen roll.
In a bowl, mix the dried bread crumbs and the
spices. Put them aside.
Beat the eggs in milk. Put them aside.
Place the flour in another bowl. Put it aside.
Working quickly, roll each wing in the flour, dip
in the mixture of eggs and milk and coat them
with seasoned dried bread crumbs.
Fry several wings at a time for 10 to 12 minutes.
Keep the wings warm in the oven while the others
are cooking.
Serve hot accompanied by hot sauce.

Une nouvelle trésorière
Vous avez sans doute constaté que notre bureau a
subi un certain renouvellement en 2005. Faisons
le point :
Keith Moser est devenu notre secrétaire dévoué.
Pour ceux qui n’ont pas encore fait sa
connaissance, il vous suffit d’assister à une de
nos réunions au cours de laquelle vous
reconnaîtrez certainement sa bonne humeur et
son rire très communicatif.
Leila, qui nous vient d’Iran, est devenue notre
représentante étudiante.
Brigitte Steinbruegge (trésorière de l’Alliance)
doit nous quitter pour raison professionnelle.
Merci Brigitte pour tout ton travail effectué
durant ces multiples années. Malgré tes
incessants voyages, nous espérons que ta
compagnie te laisse quelques weekends de repos
pour que tu puisses nous rejoindre quelquefois.
Notre nouvelle trésorière s’appelle Leah Berry.
Leah prendra le temps de se présenter dans notre
prochain bulletin.
A New Treasurer
You have without a doubt noticed that our club
has undergone a significant face-lift in 2005.
Case in point:
Keith Moser is now our devoted secretary. For
those who have not yet made his acquaintance,
you simply need to attend one of our meetings
during which you will certainly recognize his
good sense of humor and his very
communicative smile.
Leila, who comes to us from Iran, is now our
student representative.
Brigitte Steinbruegge (Treasurer of the
Alliance) must leave us for professional
reasons. Thank you Brigitte for all of the work
that you carried out over the years. Despite
your unending travels, we hope that your
company gives you some weekends off so that
you can join us from time to time. Our new
treasurer is Leah Berry. Leah will introduce
herself in our next bulletin.
