RMC SPORTS ROUNDUP Mar 7 2016 NCdt Choi 27000, DCWSRO Athlete of the Week Scott MacGregor won bronze in Junior Men’s Épée during the Ontario Fencing Provincials this past weekend at RMC. THIS WEEK IN VARSITY ATHLETICS AND COMPETITVE CLUBS • RMC fencing hosts OFA Provincial Tournament • Swim team participates in Thornhill Invitational Swim Meet • Taekwondo team competes in the annual Sport Taekwondo Open at Ryerson University Visit www.oua.ca or www.cis-sic.ca for updates on standings and results For more information about the varsity program, visit www.rmc.ca Men’s Fencing Men’s Épée This past weekend, OCdt English, OCdt Kelertas, OCdt Mansour, OCdt Conant, and OCdt MacGregor competed at the OFA Provincials in men’s épée. The competition was tough, but the team fought hard and did well. MacGregor won bronze in the Junior Men’s Épée event. Men’s Foil Overall, Provincials at RMC went smoothly and efficiently in terms of how the tournament ran. In the men’s senior foil category, Parris and Sylvain made it into DE’s. Although men’s foil didn’t do well in terms of results, we all learned a valuable lesson. We know what we have to work on and we all believe that private lessons are essential for improving our skills. The team was content with what we had accomplished in this tournament. Tommy Lee and Dan Ortega faced a national level fencer in their bouts and both of them only lost by a close 4-5. This definitely indicates that they have improved and therefore, we are satisfied with the performance of our team. Women’s Fencing Women’s Épée Provincials proved a challenging yet rewarding experience for the women's épée team. For the senior event, Victoria McCormick (IV) placed 5th, Cecily McDonnell (II) 9th, Eliza Bruce (II) 26th, Jordan Johnson (I) 28th, and Madison Van Camp (II) 30th. Cecily and Jordan both fenced in the junior event as well, as Cecily won a bronze medal and Jordan placed 14th. Congrats to an exciting and busy end to an incredible year of performance. The fencing team efficiently facilitated the operations, set-up, and tear down of the whole weekend and helped make this a milestone event for the fencing team, the community of Kingston, and the college. Women’s Foil The women’s foil team participated at OFA provincials this past weekend, here at RMCC. It was a high level competition and put all the skills and knowledge they had learned and practiced over the year to use. After a tough competition, OCdt St-Amand and OCdt Mclean finished in the top 16, while OCdt Guo and OCdt Choi followed close behind. Final results: OCdt Antony Cai NCdt Severn Mozer OCdt Antoine Boule NCdt Thomas Song Men’s lightweight yellow belt Men’s heavyweight green belt Men’s lightweight black belt Men’s HP Olympic division 1st place 1st place 1st place 2nd place Graduating Players Women’s Fencing The RMC Women's Fencing team has four graduating athletes this year: Julie Cho (sabre), Adolina Gawne (sabre), Chelsey Guo (foil) and Victoria McCormick (épée). We are all so proud of how well the team did this year and would like to thank our teammates for making our final year so memorable! Most memorable moment: JC: Maybe it's just fresh in my mind because of its immediacy, but during my last OUA Championships, one of my opponents was literally eating her lunch while she defeated me. CG: Facing Western this year at OUAs and beating them as a team, then going on to winning silver. VM: Winning gold at Carleton this year, and every time Harry's hits were so perfect that he yelled. Favourite thing about your weapon team: JC: They let me wear whatever I want in the hotel room CG: No matter what happens to each person, we can pull together as a team. Also they're just the best! VM: Everything. All the wépée bonding and inside jokes; you girls are my rocks and have made my time at RMC amazing. Favourite competition: JC: Typically the Brock Open is my favorite competition because it's our flagship away trip. CG: OUAs because it involves individual and team effort. You really get to see how every person contributes to the final results. VM: Every Canada Cup (National) event because you gain so much experience from the fencing and you make so many memories with the teammates that choose to go. Announcements Dale Towe of the men’s volleyball team was named to the CIS All-Rookie Team on Wednesday. He is the first RMCC athlete ever to be recognized nationally as an All-Rookie. Congratulations Dale! Men’s Rugby travels to Vancouver this Wednesday for 2016 National University 7s Championship. Best of luck to the team!
