SRIVAISHNAVISM
FROM THE DESK OF
SrI RanganAtha Thirumanjana
Kattiyam by Swamy Parasara Bhattar
Lord SrI RanganAtha of SrIrangam in the backdrop of Pranavakara Vimanam
Lord SrI RanganAtha
SlOkam 2
SrI:
Today we will enjoy the second slOkam of the Kattiyam for Lord RanganAthan by Swamy
ParAsara Bhattar:
anisam kumudham vikAsayantham
satatam poorNamaharnisam cha dhrusyam
7
anupaplavamadhya RangarAjam
manuthE chandramasam jAnOnumAnyam ----(2)
In this slOkam, Swamy ParAsara Bhattar visualizes Lord Ranganathan as the Moon. This
RanganAtha Chandran is however different in number of ways from the ordinary Moon. First,
the ordinary Moon makes the lilies (Kumudham) bloom (vikAsayantham) only at night. Second,
the Moon is not full always (satatam PoorNam); it waxes and wanes. Third, the ordinary Moon is
invisible during the day time. Fourth, the ordinary Moon is full of defects (dhOshams) and
difficulties (upaplavam). In contrast, the RanganAtha-Chandran is quite different in many ways.
Lord makes the Kumudha (the Earth) bloom always (anisam). He is always full (ParipoorNan in
the spirit of IsAvAsyOpanishad). He can be visualized day and night (aharnisam cha dhrusyam).
He is free from all defects and dhOshams (upaplava rahithan, anavadhyan, nirdhOshan,
anupaplavan).
Bhattar enjoyed Lord RanganAthan during one Thirumanjanam day and compared the Lord
with Chandran. He found that the Lord of Srirangam had many unique features that are not
found in the Moon. He enjoyed the differences between Lord Ranganathan and the Chandran
step by step (VyatirEka saraNi) and blessed us with this slOkam.
Bhattar wrote an in-depth, most erudite commentary of his own for this slOkam with many
VedAnthic references. Here it is with explanatory notes:
NaayantE ! You are the Jn~Ana JyOthi (flame of Jn~Anam)!
As the AzhwAr saluted, thou art: " Yejjn~AnRum engum ozhivaRa niRaintu ninRa mey Jn~Ana
sOthi" Saasvatha , ParipoorNa , all pervasive true JyOthi). JyOthi svaropam of Brahma tatthvam
is saluted here.
You are akhila hEya Prayaneekan (free from any and all dhOshams)!
You are KalyANa guNaikathan (abode of all auspicious guNams)
SvEthara samastha vasthu vilakshaNar (Tani Tatthvam differing from all others.
Sri RanganAthan's anugraham to the Bhaddha Jeevan
*************************************************
As the Jeevan driven by its timeless flow of karmas (anAdhi karma pravAham) embeds itself into
four kinds of bodies (DevAs , Humans, animals and plants) and roams in the 14 worlds. You
take pity on them and with Your visEsha kaDAksham , You rescue the Jeevan buffeted amidst
the aasA thrayaM (MaNN, PeNN, Ponn---land, women and gold); that jeevan did not
comprehend Tatthva Thrayam (Chith, achith, Iswaran) before; you blessed that jeevan with
Tatthva Thraya Jn~Anam and save them.
That jeevan is bound (Bhaddhan) in the bonds of karmAs and suffers the Taapa Thrayam
(aadhyAthmikam, Aadhibouthikam and aadhidhaivikam). At that time, the Jeevan is caught up in
the net of thriguNams (Sathvam, Rajas and Tamas) and is drowning in Karma Thrayam
(PrArabdham, Sanchitham and AagAmi KarmAs). Then, the Lord through His visEsha
KaDAksham banished the Jeevan's VirOdhi Thrayam (three obstacles to Moksham: Svaroopa
8
VirOdhi, UpAya VirOdhi and PrApya VirOdhi) and blessed them with Sukrutha Thrayam
(Yaadhrucchikam, aanushangikam and prAsangikam).
Our Lord engaged the jeevans in the aakAra thrayam (ananyArha sEshathvam, ananya
SaraNathvam and ananya bhOgyathvam). He blessed them through their AchAryan with
Manthra Thrayam (Moola Manthram, VaasudEva Manthram and VishNu Manthram). He chased
away their ajn~Ana Thrayam (ajn~Anam/nescience, anyathA Jn~Anam and Vipareetha
JnA~nam) through sanmanthra Thrayam (Moola Manthram, Dhvayam and Charama slOkam).
In Moola Manthram, the esoteric meanings of the Padha Thrayam (PraNavam , Nama: Padham
and NaarAyaNa Padham) were revealed. AakAra Thrayam led the Jeevan onward to Parva
Thrayam (Para Bhakthi, Para Jn~Anam and Parama Bhakthi) and then on to Paadha Thrayam
(Parama Padham: "ThripAdhasyaamrutham dhivi").
Special Notes on the Passages of SlOkams
***************************************
"Anisam Kumudham VikAsayantha:" During the night, Chandran makes the Kumudham
(Aambhal Flower, which is Kumudha sabdha Vaachyam) blossom. Lord RanganAthan gladdens
( Mudh) the heart of BhUmi DEvi ("Ku" sabdha Vaachyai): " Paarennum madanthayai maal
seyyum Maal".
"Sathatham PoorNam": Chandran will be PoorNan one day and apoorNan at all other times.
RanganAthan in contrast is ParipoorNan always (Idham PoorNamatha: PoorNam PoorNAth
PoorNamuthrisyathe! PoorNasya PoorNamAdhAya PoorNamEvAvasishyathE").
"aharnisam cha dhrusyam": Chandran is seen only at night (Nisaa dhrusyan). RanganAthan can
be seen at all times by every one (Varadhas-sarva bhUthAnAm adhyApi paridhrusyathE).
"anupaplavam": Chandran is Upaplavan , since he is attacked by Raahu. RanganAthan is
"anupaplavan". He cuts off the head of Raahu and attacks Raahu and therefore He is
"RaahOscchiraccha chicchEth DevAnAm Prabhurachyutha:"
"adhya RangarAjam manuthE Chandramasam JanOnumAnyam": The state of RanganAtha
unlike Chandran was (1) KumudhOllAsakam (2) PoorNan at all times (3) Seen at all times (4)
unattacked by anyone at any time. He blesses Muktha Janams to enjoy His dhivya mangaLa
vigraham in archa form at Srirangam without them blinking their eyes. Just as Chandran
nourishes medicinal herbs as rasAthmaka Chandra Sareerakan, Our Lord with His archA
roopam nourishes us all and grows our Jn~Anam and Bhakthi.

Gita – The Wisdom of Krishna
Practical Guide to Right and Happy Living:
In Twenty - Seven Self-contained Essays:
Thotalam Chellaswami, Trustee, Srinivasa Gita Satsangh Trust
(Retir20. The Law of Least Effort:
Rted Senior I. E. S. Officer Govt. of India and Senior Advisor UN
(ILO):
2. The doubt that Arjuna expresses now is more or less the same, which he expressed at the
beginning of chapter 3, discussed earlier. In spite of all the exhortations of Krishna in
chapters 3 and 4, Arjuna fails to grasp the true relevance of work. The praise that has been
bestowed by Krishna on work and workless state simultaneously has added to the
confusion. Arjuna seems to have not understood Krishna‟s exposition in chapter 4 that work
with full knowledge of the self is non-reactive and so the same as inaction. So he asked for
a way of life which he should follow to be told clearly and unequivocally.
2 Krishna Reiterates His earlier Observation:
Karma jyaayah akkarmanah (3.8) - karmasamnyaasaat karma yogah visishyate - (5.2):
“Renunciation and yoga of works both bring about nis’s’reyas, the supreme good (for
the soul); of the two, however, the yoga of works is distinguished above the
renunciation of works (tayoh tu karma yogah vis’sishyate karma samnyaasaat)”. – [5.1]:
[We are not to miss to note the importance of the term karma in karma samnyaasaat. The
emphasis is on the imperative of action. Even the sanyaasi has to work for
lokasamgraha – karma jyaayah hi akarman’ah. Why this commandment of karma yoga?
Krishna explains in the verse to follow.]: “He should be known as an eternal sanyaasin
who neither dislikes or hates nor likes or desires; free from dualities - sah jneyah nitya
samnyaasi yah na dvesht’i na kaankshati nirdvadvah hi, O Arjuna, he is easily and
happily released from bondage - sukham pramucyate bandhaat”. – [5. 3]: [The emphasis
in Krishna’s response to Arjuna is “Action rightly renounced brings liberation; Action
rightly performed brings liberation. Sri Ramakrishna stated: “Saadhakas who want to
escape from the turmoils of the world are second to those who serve the world but are
not bound by it”. The emphasis in (5.3), which can be considered as Krishna’s definition
of samnyaasa, is that renunciation (of fruits of action) can be attained only when one
gets rid of likes and dislikes Hence the importance of equanimity of mind in the
successful practice of karma yoga. These observations are confirmed by Krishna
Himself in the following two verses. We are not to miss the complementarity between
samnyaasa and karma yoga in the above observations of Krishna. [Krishna is
reconciling here both the saamkhya and yoga systems. Yoga system by prescribing that
all actions be done with no attachment to fruits, stipulates real renunciation and is
based on true knowledge]: [Although, as stated, both the disciplines are conducive to
supreme bliss singly and independently of each other, it is not without reason that
Krishna declares Karma yoga as superior to saamkhya yoga. In the first place, a karma
15
yogi is ever a samnyaasi – renouncer of actions, even though engaged in actions and he
gets freed from the bondage of samsaara very easily without any effort or trouble (5.3).
He quickly attains to God or self – realization (5.6) and constantly enjoys God’s
protection (9.22). And lastly “even a little practice of karma yoga is capable of delivering
one from the great fear of samsaara and that without any side effects - (2.40). The path of
saamkhya on the other hand, is bristling with difficulties (12.5) and it is difficult to tread
for one who has not pursued the discipline of karma yoga in the first instance (5.6). It is
for these reasons that karma yoga has been declared to be superior to jnaana yoga.]:
1. The razor-edge path of samnyaasa is very difficult to follow for those whose heart and
mind is not purified and calm. As the Katha Upanishad says: “kshurasya dhaara nishita
duratyayaa, durgam pathastat kavayah vadanti – the wise and realized ones say that the
path of discrimination and renunciation are very difficult, as they seem sharp like the razor
edge ones”. Krishna says that mastery of karma yoga is the best, easy and most reliable
way to get firmly established in mentally purified calmness. Krishna seems to be saying that
karma yoga is both the way as well as the goal, whereas samnyaasa is only the goal, which
can be successfully attained only through karma yoga.
2. [5.2]: Some commentators see a kind equivocation in this observation. What exactly did
Krishna say? Renunciation of action to realize the self and the path of detached action in the
spirit of yoga, both these are capable of leading one to high spiritual development –
nis’s’reyas. But between the two, karma yoga is superior to karma samnyaasa. Renunciation
of action is called samnyaasa. That is not so good. Engaging oneself in action and
developing the spiritual awareness along with it, is far superior, is more excellent. Krishna‟s
teaching is essentially a teaching of practical spirituality – spirituality in action. It has the
power of twice blessedness. It gives the saadhaka spiritual strength and also brings
harmony and peace to the social environment. [5.3] explains - why the way of action is
superior? The word nitya – samnyaasi means the one who discharges his duties with
devotion and dedication and without any attachment to results. That is, who sees
naishkarmya in karma. Krishna is reconciling here both the saamkhya and yoga systems.
3. As Sri Ramakrishna stated: “if you utter the word „Gita‟ a few times, you begin to say
“taagi, taagi”meaning one has renounced. The call to renunciation pervades the Gita”. In fact
the Sermon condemns unequivocally “acceptance of monastic life if the spirit of renunciation
is lacking in the heart”.
4. Through karma yoga a wider experience is gained, the divine possibilities in the human
can be processed to perfection and benign communion with the Deity‟s creation can also be
well established. These great purposes of life are denied to samnyaasin. Hence Krishna‟s
preference to karma yoga over renunciation of works as such, though both leads to
liberation. Krishna further explains: It is not action, but the attitude behind action that binds
or liberates a person. Karma yogi while acting he is not the agent of action and while living in
the world he is not of the world. Krishna is emphasising the independence of karma yoga
and jnaana yoga from each other as means for attainment of self-realisation. But Krishna
says that both the ways have the vision of the self as their fruit and so a person firmly
established in one will gain the one common fruit of both. Right knowledge leads to right
action and right action leads to right knowledge. There is a complementarity between
renunciation resulting from unitive reasoning (samnyaasa) and performance of unitive action
(karma yoga). Krishna equates samnyaasa with karma yoga, when judged by their common
effect of spiritual liberation. When we consider the means employed in these two ways, there
is a difference. However there is this important difference even considering the ends.
Without undergoing the discipline of detached action, it is in vain to abandon all external
activities; for it will result only in idleness and delusion. For an average aspirant it is a mere
pitfall, while discriminative wisdom combined with detached action will take him forward
gradually. So it comes to this, that the attainment of liberation in action is the very essence of
spiritual life and once this is acquired, it is immaterial whether thereafter one abandons
16
action externally or continues to perform them. The term yoga-yuktah in (5.7) reminds us of
the term yoga-aaroodah of (6.4), both the terms meaning the same.
5. Krishna has repeatedly stressed that the true renunciation belongs to inner consciousness
(eradication of ego) behind action and not external inaction. The Sermon insists repeatedly
the distinction between tyaaga (inward renunciation) and samnyaasa (outward renunciation).
The latter (samnyaasa), Krishna says, is valueless in the absence of the former (tyaaga) and
hardly possible to gain without it, and not necessary in the presence of inward renunciation.
Thus the starting point and the goal for both are one and the same. Without relinquishing
(tyaaga) the fruits of action, it is not possible to free oneself from egoism of agency. In other
words, karma yoga is related to the purity of the mind, which has given up egoism, as the
husk is related to the grain within. Though the husk does not sprout and become a plant
(self-realisation), yet if the seed is to sprout at all, husk is not to be separated from the grain.
It is in this sense that karma yoga is the basis of jnaana yoga (self-realisation) and he who is
well established in it will easily attain the goal without the need to renounce action. In both
the saamkhyan and the yogin the basic understanding is the first step already explained,
namely, the body-complex, a modification of prakriti, is different and distinct from the
indwelling spirit divine; the jnaani gains the knowledge of the self through negation of
physical work as binding and continued meditation on the self; but the yogin continues to
work with the basic understanding of the first step and eventually realizes the true self on
successful completion of karma yoga (4.38): The egoism of a karma yogin perishes quickly
and easily because he works for others, in which service it gets absorbed. But the egoism of
jnaana yogi, who works for his liberation, continues to exist, his disciplined life being more or
less for his own well-being and liberation. Moreover in karma yoga, as a greater experience
of the world is gained, there is the possibility of human being gaining Godly status
(madbhaavam as Krishna says) and also of establishing a communion with God and His
creation. It is because of these considerations Krishna has stated – “unitive action is superior
to renunciation of action – karma jyaayah hi akarman’ah (3.8), which is reiterated in a
different way in (5.2) - karmasamnyaasaat karma yogah visishyate. The superiority lies in
the fact that this way brings in a double benefit to the saadhaka – spiritual strength to him
and also brings peace and harmony to the people around him. Thus Krishna declares the
independence of karma yoga and jnaana yoga from each other as means for attainment of
self-realisation and contradicts the commonly held view that karma yoga through its
purificatory effect leads to jnaana yoga and that jnaana yoga alone leads to the vision of the
soul or self and thus the two are distinct because of the differences in their fruits. In the
discipline of action (yoga), the renunciation of the desire or the sense of „mine‟ is the main
factor, while in the discipline of knowledge (saamkhya), the renunciation of egoism or the
sense „I‟ is the main factor. If the aspirant renounces one of them, the other one is
automatically renounced. In the absence of “I – ness” and “mine-ness”, the doership and
enjoyership both melt away. Thus the starting point and the goal for both are one and the
same. In unitive action also (as is the case in samnyaasa), it is the continuous remembrance
by the yogi of his real nature as the spirit immortal and not the body that renders his very
action to serve as an instrument of getting united with the Absolute.
6. “When a person eager to achieve liberation renounces things related to the Supreme
Personality of Godhead, thinking them to be material, their renunciation is called
incomplete”. – “Bhakti-rasaanrita-sindhu” – S‟rila Roopa Goswami: “Renunciation is
complete when it is in the knowledge that everything in existence belongs to the Lord and
that no one should claim proprietorship on any thing. Then, where is the question of
renunciation? One who is fully in Krishna consciousness is always a renouncer because he
feels neither hatred nor desire for the results of his actions”. – Bhaktivedanta Swami

108 DIVYA DESAMS
Tamarapu Sampath Kumaran
Om Namo Narayanaya
Divya Desams are temples where Azhwars worshipped Lord Vishnu, as the presiding deity.
Their divine hymns are popularly known as Nalayira Divya Prabantham. The Divya
Prabandham is in the form of adoration of the deities of 108 temples (Divya Desams). The
verses in simple Tamil explain what the Vedas, Upanishads and Vyasa's Brahmasutras say.
It was the scholar-saint Nathamuni who, in the 10th century, retrieved and compiled this
bhakti treasure, which is the pride of Tamil classical literature. The Sri Vaishnava guru
parampara (inheritance order of the preceptors) is held to commence from Lord Sri Narayana
himself, and to centre, rightly so, around Sri Nathamuni and his grandson Sri Yamunacharya.
The Naalaayira Divya Prabhandam is classified as under:
Mudal Aayiram or First Thousand contains 947 songs. It includes:
Periyaazhwar Thirumozhi (473 songs) of Periazhwar, including Thiru Pallaandu.
Tiruppaavai by Andal (30 songs)
Naachiyaar Thirumozhi by Andal (143 Songs)
Perumaal Thirumozhi by Kulasekhara Azhwar (105 songs)
Thiruchanda Virutham by Tirumazhisai Azhwar (120 songs)
Tirumaalai by Thondaradi Podiazhwar (45 songs)
Tiruppalli Ezuchi by Thondaradi Podiazhwar (10 songs)
Amalaanathi Piraan by Thirupaanazhwar (10 songs)
Kanninum Siru Thaambu by Madhurakavi Azhwar (11 songs)
Periya Thirumozhi or Greater Hyms contains 1134 songs, all sung by Thirumangai Azhwar. It
is divided into Periya Thirumozhi (1084 songs), Thiru Kurun Thaandagam (20 songs) and
Thiru Nedun Thaandagam (30 songs).
18
ThiruvaaiMozhi or Divine Hyms were sung by Nammazhwar and faithfully written down by
his disciple Madhurakavi Azhwar. It contains 1102 songs.
Iyerpaa is the last division in the Divya Prabandam and contains the following:
Mudal Thiruvandaadhi by Poigai Azhwar (100 songs)
Irandaam Thiruvandaadhi by Bhootath Azhwar (100 songs)
Moondraam Thiruvandaadhi by Pey Azhwar (100 songs)
Naanmugan Thiruvandaadhi by Thirumazhisai Azhwar (96 songs)
Thiru Virutham by Nammazhwar (100 songs)
Thiru Vaasiriyam by Nammazhwar (7 songs)
Periya Thiru Andaathi by Nammazhwar (87 songs)
Thiruvezukootrirukkai by ThirumangaiAzhwar (1 song)
Siriya Thirumadal by ThirumangaiAzhwar (40 songs)
Periya Thirumadal by ThirumangaiAzhwar (78 songs)
The last piece in the collection is Ramanuja Nootranthaathi (108 songs) of Amudhanar, and it
was added to the text compiled by Naathamuni.
Vaishnava Agamas:
The Agamas are texts derived from various concepts in the Vedas dealing with
worship. The Agamas describe in detail the various forms of God, the methods
of temple worship, home worship, fire sacrifices offerings and other related
ideas. The Sri Vaishnava Sampradaya accepts two Agamas only as authoritative
and non-conflicting with Vedas. They are: Pancharatra Agama & Vaikhanasa Agama
Of the two Pancharatra is the pradhana or main source of authority for the
Sri Vaishnavas. Vaikhanasa Agama is highly utilized for temple worship only and
is restricted to a certain group of Vedic priests.
Vishnu is the Supreme Lord in the Pancharatra Agamas. The Vaishnavas regard the Pancharatra
Agamas to be the most authoritative. They believe that Lord Vishnu Himself revealed these
Agamas. The Asura Madhukaitaba seized the Vedas from Lord Brahma and hid himself into the
sea. Lord Vishnu took the Matsyavathara fought with the Asura within the sea, killed him and got
back the Vedas and restored them to Brahma. It took 5 days for the Lord for this purpose.
Without the Vedas, the world became dark, not knowing how to worship the Lord. So Lord
Vishnu divided Himself into two, one as Guru or teacher and the other as Sishya or disciple. The
guru taught the disciple the methods of worshipping God for five nights. Hence the teaching was
called Pancharatra or work of the five nights. They are all about the methods of worship.
Like the Pancharathra Samhitas, there is another kind of Samhitas called the Vaikhanasa
Samhithas, prescribing the methods of worship in temples. They were taught to Sage Vikasana by
MahaVishnu and through him to the Sage's descendants. There is not much of a difference
between the two, except chanting of some different manthras during the worship..
Pancharatra is more universal and used extensively by the Sri Vaishnava Acharyas to propagate
worship of Vishnu among the masses.

DHARMA STHOTHRAM
Part 62
Vrsakrith, Rudrah
Sri Vaishnavism has unique introductions as' Thaniyan', a composition done and
presented before Azwars Nalayira Divya Prabhandam . In Kamba Ramayanam also
a Thaiyan called as "Nanmaiyum Selamum......... Immaiye Rama enrum irandu
ezhuthinal' is recited before regular Parayanam. It is said as Rama nama is sure to
give happiness and wealth , erase sins and errors and even avoid births and deaths.
In this Ramayanam there is one verse again as elleerum avan rama namame .
Sambadi brother of Jatayu was in very old age ,loosing all his wings. He learnt the
demise of Jatayu while trying to fight with Ravana during his abduction of Seetha ,
Sambadi became very upset which caused much deterioration of his health. Then he
requested all the monkeys to recite Rama nama in order to gain strength and in
getting his wings. Thus we find in Kamba Ramayanam the fame in namas as
kainkaryam, ashtakshara manthram, and as a power generator. In Thondarad podi
Ahwar's Thirumalai Thaniyan is found as "Thirumalai padum Thondaradi podi
emperumanai eppozhuthum pesu '.This is meant as to recite Azhwar's name for
ever as he praised sriman Narayana for ever .It is stressed here just for the reasons
21
of' utra thirumalai padum '. Thus namas give the importance in many forms both to
Bahgawan and Bagavathas. Dharma Sthothram aims to understand the meanings of
such namas recited in Sri vishnu Sahasranamam.
In 113th nama 'Vrsakrith' it is meant as one who takes the form for the sake of Vrsa
or Dharma. He is an embodiment of Dharma , cool and refreshing like elixir. His
beautiful form and actions of refreshing nature like the shower of nectar is ever the
great one. Besides the transcendental qualities , the lord has numerous perfections
which render him the object of man's highest aspiration and love. He is the light of
lights, the discernment of the discerning , the brilliance of brilliants , the source of
the memory and the knowledge , the dispeller of doubts , the maker of Vedantha ,
Omniscient and unrivalled in knowledge. , the source of seven great seers and the
four ancient manus, identifiable with the prime and most significant of every species
of existence. He has instituted the eternal laws of duty and descends to establish
righteousness , protect the good and destruct the wicked , which is quoted in Gita as
Parithranaya sadhunam vinachaya sathushkrathasm dharma sthapanarthaya
samhavami yuge yuge .
The 13th sloka is Rudro bahusira bhahrur visva yoni sucisravah / amrtah sasvata
sthanur vararoho maha tapah // In this 114th nama is Rudrah which is He is one who
makes all beings cry at the time of cosmic dissolution or as one who gives rud or
speech . He also drives away all sorrows with our humble prayers to him. If one just
pray Him as Thvameva mathacha pithathvameva , thvameva banduscha
sakathvameva, thvameva vidhythravinam thvameva sarvam maha deva deva He will
start acting as our mother, father, kinsman, friend, acharya for our learning, source
of wealth and as one and all in every aspects. Thus by developing exclusive love for
Sriman Narayana and devoting all our mind , senses , body, wealth and all worldly
possessions as a single minded devotion , it is sure to be free from all sorrows.
Swamy Desikan in Paduka Sahasram 50th sloka says as "Padukas transform the
bad fate lines written on the head of a person , who stands bent headed near you. "
Hence with sincere prayers , and total saranagathy, the lord removes all our sorrows
and even their causes totally.
To be continued......

SrI Hayagrivan likhita kaimkarya goshTi is blessed to release "Swami Desikan's
Sankalpa Suryodayam Vol 2" as eBook # 104 in SrIhayagrIvan eBooks
series. (Link to the eBook can be found at the end of this message).
Sankalpa Suryodayam is a kAvya nATakam composed by Swami Desikan. With brilliant allegory
and logic, AchAryan shows by way of creating unique characters in this nATakam (drama), the
various impediments that stands in the path of bhagavad anubhavam and self-realization. Just
27
as the young Sun that rises in the dawn with new promise and life giving energy, chasing away
the frightening darkness of the night and illuminatiing the universe by its self-luminescence, so
also, this "Sankalpa Suryodayam" by our AchAryan, drives away the internal darkness of
nescience and delusions of the ahamkaaram in the prapannan and energizes him with renewed
focus and assurance of the greatness of the glorious path of sat sampradAyam and SrI hari
bhakti.
The Drama consists of 10 Acts, with each Act gradually progressing from the initial inertia that
befalls every soul as it tries to dis-entangle from samsaaric woes and seek the path of devotion,
to the climax where the discriminating intellect overcomes all the trials and after an epic battle
with the aasuric forces (tendencies), the soul emerges victorious as a firm devotee of SrIman
nArAyaNan. The first five Acts of this drama was released as Vol1 in the Ahobilavalli series
(www.ahobilavalli.org). The present release (Volume 2) consists of the final five Acts leading
upto the glorious finale of the drama. aDiyEn has been blessed to provide the commentaries for

Introduction | Biography
Introduction
Alwars
(in
pure
Tamil
"AzhwAr")
means
"One
who
immerses himself". They really, deeply immersed themselves in
their
devotion
and
bhakti
towards
the
Lord
Sriya: Pathi Sriman Narayanan. The AzhwArs are reported to
be incarnations of NithasUris of Sri Vaikuntam, namely, the
weapons, the Vanamaali, the GarudA, et al. They lived like
human beings and burst out bhakti laden great works for
the sake of humanity. The works of Alwars stood mysteriously a
replica of the Vedas themselves and therefore came to be known
as Dravida Veda. In fact, there is a view that even the
great
Rishis
are
no
match
to
the
greatness
of
the Alwars because these Rishis got their 'jnAnam' (
wisdom) as a result of their own actions of 'spiritual merit' (
Punyam) whereas the wisdom of the Alwars was the direct result
of the Lord's divine grace and therefore called ' Divyam'. It
is because of this that the works of Alwars is called '
Divya Prabandham' are 4000 poems (pAsurams).
These works of AzhwArs are non-paralleled in every sense- be it
in
sentiment,
style
or
syntax.They
take
even
a
casual reader on a guided tour into the esoteric exegesis of
31
the Vedas without offending the provisions of exclusions and
prohibitions enjoined in the study of the Vedas in original. (by Sri
Anbil Ramaswamy, USA)
AzhwAr's
paasurams
(poems)
called
naalaayira
dhivyap
prabhandam
composed
by twelve AzhwArs.The paasurams were collected and brought
out by one of the much revered Sri vaishnava AchAryAs called
Sriman Naathamuni. By the time of sriman Naathamuni (9th
century A.D.) the AzhwAr paasurams were not lost or
unknown. It was by divine grace of Sriman Narayanan that
Sriman Naathamuni came to know of the Tamil poems praising
Lord Vishnu. It is believed that Sriman Naathamuni heard some
devotees
visiting
his
home
town
of
VeeranaaraayaNapuram
(present day
kaattu mannaarkudi
near Mayilaadurthurai or Mayavaram) singing a few (11)
Tamil songs starting with "aaraa amudhE adiyEn udalam" and
ending with
"... kurugoor sadagOpan
kuzhalil maliyach sonna Or
aayiratthuL ippatthum,
mazhalai theera vallaar kaamar
maanEy nOkkiyarkE."
(NammAzhwAr's Thiruvaaymozhi 5.8.1 - 5.8.11)
Sriman Naathamuni was greatly excited and enchanted with the
exquisite
beauty
of
the
poems. He approached the devotees and enquired about its
origin.
The
ending
of
the
11
poems,
"aayiratthuL
ippatthu,"(means
this
ten
of
the
thousand) suggested that there are many more such poems
(may be
thousand?).
This
possibility intrigued Sriman
Naathamuni.
Unfortunately,
the devotees were unaware of any other
poems
besides
the
eleven
they
had
just
finished
reciting.
However,
they
suggested
to
Sriman Naathamuni that he may try enquiring in the town of
thiruk
kurugoor,
present
day
AzhwAr
thiru
nagari
near
thirunelvEli.
So
he
set
out
to
travel
from
kaattumannarkudi
to
thiruk
kurugoor,
a
long
journey
indeed
in
his
time.
There he found
one paraangusa daasar. From him, Sriman Naathamuni learnt 11
more paasurams called
kaNNinuN
sirutthaambu.
These
were composed by Madhurakavi AzhwAr and all 11 paasurams
are in praise of kurugoor SadagOpan (NammAzhwAr). Sriman
Naathamuni was excited to have doubled his collection. But this
32
only whetted his desire to
seek out the more than
1,000, promised in the first set of paasurams he fell in love with
at his home town.
Paraangusa daasar suggested that he repeatedly recite this
great
kaNNinuN
sirutthaambu
(sung
in
praise
of
Sri Sadagopan- NammAzhwAr) in the hope of pleasing the
Lord. Sriman Naathamuni took his advice sincerely and recited
it
about
12,000
times!
It
is
said
that NammAzhwAr was impressed with Sriman Naathamuni's
persistence and appeared before him. NammAzhwAr was so
impressed that he revealed to Sriman Naathamuni not just the
1102 paasurams of his own "thiruvaay mozhi", but also all the
rest
of
the
paasurams
composed
by
the
other eleven AzhwArs. From this, we may deduce that it is
Sriman Naathamuni, who gathered the Tamil treatise (these
4000 poems) praising Lord Vishnu composed by the twelve
AzhwArs.
Sriman
naadhamuni
called this
collection of
paasurams or prabhandams naalaayira dhivya prabhandam or
draavida vEdham.
There is much debate about the exact historical dates for the
twelve AzhwArs. It is believed that most of the AzhwArs lived
prior to kali yuga, i.e. at least 3000 years ago. Others place
the aazhvaars in the range of 7th through the early parts of 9th
century.
In
any
case,
we
can
be
sure
that
the
AzhwArs
lived
much before Sriman
Naathamuni (826
A.D.)
since
during
his
time
AzhwAr
pAsurams
had
become virtually unknown.
Due perhaps to historical reasons, much of these treasures had
been lost to humanity for a while. It was given to the
great
Naathamuni
to
retrieve
and
revivify them in
their pristine glory for the benefit of posterity. The long line of
the lineage of
preceptors
who followed him kept the
torch burning and handed them over to successive generations
. We can justifiably be proud of the rich heritage . It is our
duty,
therefore,
to
familiarize
ourselves
with
the lives and works of these preceptors , the least we can do
as a token of our gratitude for the invaluable treasures
bequeathed to us.
Ranga.

DO YOU KNOW ?
13. Chest congestion
Chest congestion is a very common problem where mucus and phlegm is
accumulated in lungs and bronchial tubes. If not treated timely it can lead to
serious complications like pneumonia.
Home remedy is the best remedy as it has no side effects and at the same time, it
provides relief to chest congestion by eliminating mucus from the respiratory tract.
Ginger is a very important natural source of relieving chest congestion because
it helps to fight the infection. It can be consumed in many ways.


Mix 1tsp of ginger juice with 1tp of honey and consume it twice daily. We can
even add 1tsp of lime juice in the above mixture and consume it. Lime juice helps
to loosen the cough.
Drink black tea with small grated piece of ginger, cloves, basil leaves, pepper and
lemon juice.
Turmeric is also an effective natural ingredient in treating and relieving chest
congestion. It also speeds up the recovery process. One can mix 1pinch of
turmeric powder in a glass of hot milk and consume it twice, once in the early morning
and once at night, while going to bed.
To this hot milk one can add 1tsp of honey for taste. We can even consume this
milk occasionally in order to prevent the infection.
Adding fluid to the body helps in loosening the mucus. So, herbal tea should be
consumed twice a day to cure chest congestion. For this, boil some lemongrass leaves,
honey, pepper and ginger in water till the quantity of mixture is reduced to half.
Now, strain the mixture, and consume the same when warm. Chicken Soup too is
popular and easy source of adding fluids and moisture to the body. It reduces the
inflammation of the mucus membranes, thins the mucus and thus helps in releasing it
out from the body.
1 tsp of freshly grated onion juice, when consumed daily helps in relieving
cough. One can also mix equal quantities of onion juice and honey and keep it aside for
4-5 hrs.Later consume 1tsp of the same twice a day. This helps in getting rid of phlegm
present in the system due to chest congestion.

Oh Kapata Narasimha! Oh Lord, who did not swerve away from the boons
given to Hiranya and yet hoodwinked him through your avatara features!
When You appeared out of the Pillar in his palace with the frightening swirl
of your manes and ear-shattering roars, your brows were twittering with
your mighty anger at Hiranya for the injustices that he did to your devotee.
Even in that state of fury, your lotus eyes fell with mercy on Prahlaada.
Those merciful glances were like the feedings of divine and invigorating milk
to the child Prahlaada. Your limitless compassion to your devotees became
evident then.

Bhishma tells Yudhishtra that one should always sing of Him who gives moksha,
that is of Lord Krishna. There can be nothing that can give greater pleasure than
to think of Him and sing His praises. The Vishnu Sahasranama that Bhishma
gave us is superior to even the Bhagavad Gita, for the Gita was preached by
Krishna. But the Vishnu Sahasranama has the merit of having Krishna as a
listener.
No scholar, however humble he might be, will admit to the merits of another
scholar's discourses. But Krishna, the Lord of everything, was unlike an average
scholar. He was keen to listen to Bhishma. Many sages too hastened to listen to
Bhishma. What was so special about Bhishma's words? What made him so
sought after as a spiritual mentor? The answer lies in the fact that Bhishma
never wavered from the Sastras, said M.V. Anantapadmanabhachariar in a
discourse.
Once when Bhishma performed the death anniversary of his father, he was
about to place the balls of rice on the ground, when a hand was suddenly
extended to claim the rice offering (pinda). The hand was that of Shantanu,
Bhishma's father. Bhishma asked his father what he was doing there. Shantanu
said that no one on the earth performed a death anniversary in the strictest
accordance to the Sastras, as his son Bhishma did. So he had come there in
person to accept the pinda. Bhishma, however, said he would not place the rice
balls in his father's hands for that was contrary to the Sastras. The Sastras
prescribed that the balls of rice be placed on the ground, and that was what he
was going to do. Thus Bhishma never once violated the rules of Sastra.
If Bhishma was a fit person to offer advice even to sages, why did everyone
have to wait until he was on his death bed to get his advice? Until then he had
consumed the food offered by Duryodhana, and hence the blood that coursed
through his veins was tainted. But now, as his blood was exiting his body
because of the arrows shot by Arjuna. He was purified and doubly qualified to
advise others. Bhishma had earned the respect of all through his exemplary
conduct. That is why even Krishna was anxious to listen to his words.
