A magical setting and a warm atmosphere make Colmar feel really unique. Set off
to discover the 5 traditional themed Christmas markets: local produce, arts and
crafts, children’s Christmas market... They are intimate and friendly, nestling in the
heart of the historic squares of old Colmar, and showcase local products and crafts.

Christmas masses
These are traditionally celebrated in Alsace at midnight on
Christmas Eve, 24 December. To find out about the venues and
times of the masses in a particular area, contact the relevant local

The huge Father Christmas's post box at the "Little Venice" market means all the
children can come there and post their mail. Father Christmas will reply to all the
letters posted to him and will hand out presents to children at 4 pm every Wednesday.

Sylvie, our talented florist, will reveal the secrets of making original decorations to

Fun guided tour in the "Land of Stars"
A stimulating family visit to discover the charms of the old imperial city with its Christmas lights, on the twin theme
of Christmas traditions and the rich heritage. The walk is led by an experienced guide and will be accompanied by a
competition requiring observation or based on general culture. The focus will be on humour and relaxation and the first
three will receive gifts.

Night Watchman's round
Throughout Advent, the Night Watchman invites visitors to follow him down the alleyways with their Christmas
lights and to discover the city's abundant treasures, but also the history of the Night Watchmen, the village and the
Christmas traditions. He will offer up a charming ballad to the accompaniment of an accordionist and will ask the
audience to join in!

The Advent calendar
Every evening at 5 pm, a lamplighter along with 11 star-bearers come down the main staircase of the Town Hall to go and
open one of the calendar’s windows. A story linked to the Saint of the day or the calendar image is told by a mysterious
voice. In this way, each window will help you find out about the rites and customs of Christmases in Alsace... Depending
on the day, this ceremony is accompanied by Christmas carols, handing out “Wienachts-Bredele” (Christmas biscuits),
gingerbread, toys and other small gifts to delight both young and old.

Café and exhibition in both a traditional and modern Christmas spirit. An exhibition of decorations and original handmade

organised with the idea of a vigil in mind, along with sampling some wine and hot chocolate.

Night Watchman's round
The Night Watchman in his period costume, complete with halberd, three-cornered hat, lantern and horn, tells his story of
the city, accompanying the route with anecdotes and his Alsatian singing. You can join him as he walks through the streets.
From 01 to 23/12 at 9 pm and 31/12 at midnight – Corps de Garde – Free
Torchlight procession through the vineyards and climb up to the Schauenberg Chapel on the Pfaffenheim Hills, by
torchlight. Holy Innocents’ service. Going back to a 17th century custom: expression of gratitude by the people
of Pfaffenheim to the Virgin Mary following the Thirty Years’ War and the epidemic of the plague that followed.
At the end of the service, the Community of Sisters and the Schauenberg association will provide a hot drink. Option
of buying torches on the spot.
